The howls didn’t stop.

They grew.

Layer upon layer, echoing through the forest like a rising storm that refused to break. From the high stone windows of Kael’s chamber, the sound carried far too far, spreading like a warning to anything that could hear it.

War was no longer approaching.

It had arrived.

Lira stood near the edge of the room, arms wrapped tightly around herself as if that alone could hold her together. The air felt different now. Charged. Heavy. Like something unseen had settled over the entire territory.

“The Council,” she repeated quietly.

The word didn’t feel real on her tongue.

She had heard of them every wolf had. Not as rulers, but as something older. Higher. Untouchable. The kind of power that didn’t need to show itself to be feared.

And now they were involved.

Because of her.

Kael hadn’t moved from where he stood.

His gaze remained fixed on her,

“Say something,” Lira muttered, breaking under the silence.

Kael exhaled slowly.

“They don’t move without reason,” he said.

“That’s not helpful.”

“It’s the only truth that matters right now.”

She let out a frustrated breath, dragging a hand through her hair. “They’re threatening to burn your territory. Your people. All because of me.”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

No denial.

Just truth.

Lira’s jaw tightened. “And you’re still saying you won’t give me up?”

Kael stepped forward slightly.

“Do you want me to?” he asked.

The question caught her off guard.

She opened her mouth,

Then closed it again.

Because the answer wasn’t simple.

Did she want to live?

Yes.

Did she want innocent people to die because of her?

No.

Her voice came out quieter this time. “That’s not fair.”

Kael’s expression didn’t change. “War isn’t fair.”

Silence stretched again.

But this time it felt different.

Heavier.

Closer.

“What happens if you refuse them?” she asked.

“They attack.”

“And if you give me up?”

“They stop.”

Her chest tightened painfully.

“So it really is that simple.”

“No,” Kael said.

His voice dropped.

“It never is.”

“I don’t understand,” she said. “Why me? If I’m so dangerous, wouldn’t they want me dead already?”

“They don’t want you dead,” Kael replied.

That made her frown. “Then what do they want?”

Kael didn’t answer immediately.

And that—

That was worse than anything he could have said.

“Kael.”

“They want control,” he said.

“They think they can control me?” she asked.

“They think they can try.”

A bitter laugh slipped from her lips. “That’s stupid.”

“Yes.”

Then Lira shook her head. “Then let me go.”

“No.”

“I’m serious,” she said, stepping closer. “If I leave, they won’t destroy your territory.”

“You don’t know that.”

“It’s better than waiting for them to attack!”

“It’s exactly what they expect you to do.”

That stopped her.

Her brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”

Kael stepped closer now.

“They’re not just testing your power,” he said. “They’re testing mine.”

Her pulse quickened.

“They want to see if I’ll break under pressure. If I’ll choose strategy over instinct.”

“And what are you choosing?” she asked quietly.

His gaze held hers.

Unmoving.

“Neither.”

Her breath caught slightly.

Before she could respond, another knock slammed against the door.

Harder this time.

Urgent.

The wolf from earlier didn’t wait for permission. He pushed the door open, his expression tense.

“They’re closer,” he said. “Scouts say they’ve crossed the outer ridge.”

Kael’s posture shifted instantly.

Command took over.

“How many?” he asked.

“More than before. And… they’re not alone.”

Lira’s stomach dropped. “What does that mean?”

The wolf hesitated.

Then said it.

“Council enforcers.”

Silence crashed into the room.

Even Kael stilled for a fraction of a second.

That was all Lira needed to know,

This was bad.

Very bad.

“Prepare the defenses,” Kael said sharply. “No one engages without my order.”

The wolf nodded quickly and disappeared.

The door shut.

And the room felt smaller than before.

“Who are they?” Lira asked.

Kael turned back to her.

“Not wolves,” he said.

Her heart skipped. “Then what?”

“They’re what the Council sends when they don’t want a fight.”

That didn’t make sense. “This is a fight.”

“No,” Kael said quietly.

“This is a warning.”

A chill ran down her spine.

“And what happens after the warning?” she asked.

Kael didn’t look away.

“They stop warning.”

The meaning settled deep in her chest.

Lira looked down at her hands.

Still trembling slightly.

Still not entirely hers.

“This is my fault,” she said.

“No.”

She snapped her head up. “Don’t say that like it’s not true.”

“It’s not.”

“They’re here because of me!”

“They’re here because of what you are,” Kael corrected.

“That’s the same thing!”

“No,” he said firmly. “It isn’t.”

The difference mattered to him.

She could see that.

But right now, it didn’t feel like it mattered at all.

“They’ll kill everyone,” she whispered.

“Not if I stop them.”

Her eyes searched his face. “You can’t stop the Council.”

Kael didn’t hesitate.

“Watch me.”

The confidence in his voice should have been reassuring.

It wasn’t.

It was terrifying.

Because it meant he was willing to risk everything.

For this.

For her.

“Why?” she asked suddenly.

The word slipped out before she could stop it.

Kael stilled slightly.

“Why what?”

“Why are you doing this?” she pressed. “You don’t know me. You don’t trust me. You literally just told me I could destroy everything here.”

Her voice shook now.

“So why are you still choosing me?”

Silence.

Kael stepped closer again.

And this time,

There was something different in his eyes.

Something less controlled.

“You came into my territory,” he said.

“That’s not an answer.”

“You survived things that should have killed you.”

“Still not an answer.”

“You didn’t beg.”

That caught her off guard.

“What?”

“In the forest,” he said. “When your pack was hunting you. When you were cornered.”

His gaze locked onto hers.

“You didn’t beg for your life.”

Lira’s breath slowed.

“I wasn’t going to give them that,” she said quietly.

“I know.”

The way he said it,

Low.

Certain.

It did something strange to her chest.

Something she didn’t want to name.

Kael stepped even closer now.

Close enough that the space between them felt… intentional.

“Most people break,” he continued. “You didn’t.”

Her heart started beating faster.

“That doesn’t mean I’m worth this,” she said.

“That’s not for you to decide.”

The words landed differently this time.

Not cold.

Not sharp.

Something dangerous.

Before she could respond,

A distant explosion shook the ground beneath them.

Both of them turned instantly.

The walls trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

“They’ve started,” Lira whispered.

Kael’s expression hardened.

“Stay here.”

“I’m not staying here,” she snapped.

“You are.”

“No, I’m not!” she stepped forward, blocking his path. “This is my fight too.”

“It’s not.”

“It is now!”

Their eyes locked.

Clashing.

Neither willing to back down.

“You can barely control your power,” Kael said.

“And you think locking me in here will fix that?” she shot back.

Another explosion echoed.

Closer.

Lira flinched.

But didn’t move away.

“I won’t hide,” she said.

Kael studied her.

Really studied her.

And for a moment, something shifted.

Like he was seeing not just what she was

But what she could become.

“You stay by me,” he said finally.

Her breath caught slightly.

“That’s your condition?”

“That’s my order.”

A small pause.

Then;

“Fine.”

Kael didn’t waste another second.

He turned and moved toward the door.

Lira followed.

The moment they stepped outside chaos hit them.

Fire lit the sky.

Smoke twisted through the air.

Wolves moved in coordinated lines, preparing for impact.

And beyond the gates, figures stood still.

Silent.

Watching.

Not attacking.

Not rushing.

Just waiting.

“They’re not even trying to hide,” she whispered.

“They don’t need to,” Kael replied.

Her eyes scanned them.

There weren’t many.

But something about them felt wrong.

Off.

Not like wolves.

Not like anything she understood.

One of them stepped forward.

Slow.

Controlled.

The air seemed to tighten with every step.

“Kael Draven,” the figure called.

His voice carried easily across the distance.

Too easily.

Like it didn’t belong to the wind.

“You’ve been given a choice.”

Kael didn’t respond.

The figure continued.

“Hand over the girl… and your pack survives.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Tense.

“And if I refuse?” Kael asked.

The figure tilted his head slightly.

“Then we stop asking.”

Lira felt the words in her bones.

Cold.

Certain.

She stepped slightly closer to Kael.

Not touching.

But close enough to feel his presence.

To anchor herself.

The figure’s gaze shifted.

Locked onto her.

And for the first time,

Lira felt something worse than fear.

Recognition.

“You don’t even know what you’re protecting,” he said.

Kael’s voice dropped.

“I know enough.”

“No,” the figure said softly. “You don’t.”

Another step forward.

The ground didn’t react.

Didn’t shift.

Like even the earth didn’t want to challenge him.

“She won’t stay under your control,” he continued. “She never will.”

Kael didn’t move.

Didn’t react.

But Lira felt it.

The tension.

The decision building.

“Last chance,” the figure said.

Silence.

Kael stepped forward.

Just one step.

But it was enough.

Because everything changed with it.

“I don’t give up what’s mine,” he said.

The words echoed.

Sharp.

Final.

Lira’s breath caught.

Because something about that,

About the way he said it,

Didn’t sound like a strategy.

Didn’t sound like leadership.

It sounded like something else.

Something far more dangerous.

The figure smiled slightly.

Not amused.

Not surprised.

Like he expected this all along.

“Then you’ve chosen destruction,” he said.

Kael didn’t respond.

Didn’t need to.

Because the moment the figure lifted his hand everything shifted.

The air cracked.

Power surged.

And Lira felt it,

Stronger than before.

Faster.

Closer to the surface.

Her body reacted instantly.

Her breath hitched.

Her vision flickered.

“No…” she whispered.

Kael turned sharply.

“Lira.”

But it was already happening.

That same energy,

That same force is rising again.

Uncontrolled.

Unstoppable.

Her fingers curled into fists.

Her body trembled.

“I can’t” she gasped.

Kael moved closer instantly.

“Stay with me.”

“It’s worse this time”

“I know.”

Her eyes flickered again,

That glow is returning.

Stronger.

Brighter.

The figure watching from beyond the gates smiled wider.

“There it is,” he said softly.

Lira’s knees buckled slightly.

Kael caught her immediately.

Held her steady.

“You’re not losing control,” he said.

“I am”

“No.”

His voice cut through everything.

Sharp.

Commanding.

“You’re not.”

Her breath hitched.

The power surged again.

Harder.

Wild.

But this time, she didn’t collapse.

Didn’t explode.

She stayed standing.

Barely.

Kael’s hand tightened slightly on her arm.

“Look at me,” he said.

She did.

And for a moment, everything else faded.

The fire.

The war.

The threat.

Just his voice.

Just his presence.

“Hold it,” he said.

“I’m trying”

“Try harder.”

Her teeth clenched.

Her body shook.

But something….Something shifted.

The power didn’t explode.

It pulsed.

The figure’s smile faded slightly.

Kael noticed.

And his voice dropped.

“That’s it.”

Lira’s breathing slowed.

The energy inside her twisted

But inward.

Controlled.

For the first time.

The silence that followed was different.

Not fear.

Not chaos.

Something else.

The figure tilted his head.

Studying her now.

Not like prey.

Like something… unexpected.

“Interesting,” he murmured.

Kael didn’t look away from Lira.

But his next words were for them.

“She’s not yours to take.”

“We’ll see.”

And then,

He lowered his hand.

The pressure in the air vanished.

Just like that.

But the threat didn’t.

It stayed.

Lingering.

Waiting.

“Nightfall,” the figure said. “That’s how long you have.”

And just like that they were gone.

Just… gone.

Like they were never there.

Silence fell across the battlefield.

Heavy.

Uncertain.

Lira’s legs gave out slightly.

Kael steadied her again.

“You held it,” he said.

“I almost didn’t.”

“But you did.”

That mattered.

More than she expected.

She looked up at him.

“What happens at nightfall?” she asked.

Kael’s gaze darkened slightly.

“They come back.”

Her stomach dropped.

“And this time…

“They won’t ask.”

The weight of that settled deep.

But something else settled too.

Something new.

Something dangerous.

Because for the first time

Lira realized it wasn’t just them preparing for war.

It was her.

Whatever she was becoming, it was waking up.

Faster now.

Stronger.

And when night fell, she didn’t know if she would still be able to control it.

As the sun slowly began to sink and the countdown to nightfall started…

Lira understood one terrifying truth:

The next time her power rises it might not listen to her at all.
