Chapter 5

Autor: Leafy Autumn
Amelia often joked that her brother couldn't hold a candle to mine. Ivan was cold, composed, and imposing, whereas Marcus had the reckless charm of a wayward scion.

But the Hackett family's scion had become famous in the business world. In just over three years of running his company, he had nearly doubled its value.

That handkerchief had brought us closer. On bad days, I would chat with him, and he always managed to make me laugh with his jokes.

After being reborn, my happiest and most relaxed moments were these chats with Marcus.

"Aren't CEOs always too busy? How do you find time to chat with me every day?"

Marcus replied almost instantly. "Because it's you. I don't want you waiting even a second for me, so I've basically been glued to my phone 24 hours a day."

Was this what it felt like to be loved? Ivan had never done this for me.

This time, I wanted to experience such love, so I agreed to give things with Marcus a chance.

I had kept a diary since I was a child. Recently, the guy I had written about in my diary was him.

I didn't know if Ivan had read it. When I returned home, my diary was neatly placed on the table.

Ivan didn't come back for several days, so I took the chance to tell my parents about my relationship with Marcus.

I held their hands, asking them to promise to stay near me in the future.

They nodded as if humoring me. But I didn't care. Their agreement meant they had to stay near me from now on.

That evening, Ivan brought Vicky home for dinner. She wore a high-end outfit that made her look more imposing than before.

At the table, Mom and Dad were not particularly pleased, but there was no awkward confrontation.

After dinner, we gathered in the living room.

"Ivan, Vicky, we won't oppose your marriage, but we need to clarify some things first," Dad said.

Throughout the day, Ivan's occasional looks in my direction made me feel tense.

Vicky sat up straight, her eyes bright as she looked at Dad.

"Ivan is getting married, and Iris has a boyfriend. To avoid future conflicts, I want to make things clear. The Goldsmith family's inheritance will be split evenly between you, no matter who or how you marry."

Before Ivan could respond, Vicky spoke up. "That's unreasonable. Iris is a woman, so she'll marry into another family in the future. That's basically giving the inheritance away to someone else!"

Mom had barely looked at Vicky all evening.

Now, she said, "You're attempting to boss our family around before you're even part of it?"

I looked at Ivan. He looked back at me, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

"Don't tell me that Iris' boyfriend is with her just for the family inheritance."

He pulled Vicky closer and said, "I agree that this split is unreasonable."

Vicky leaned against him. He continued, "Iris was adopted. I don't care if the family covers her expenses. She can marry anyone and stay here if she likes."

Dad's and Mom's expressions darkened, while Dad's shoulder twitched slightly.

"Who told you Iris was adopted? You're the adopted one."

EpilogueIvan's POVI was about to lose Iris completely, even if she still treated me as her brother. After being reborn, I desperately tried to reclaim everything I had lost. In the end, I realized that I was nothing but a joke. The recordings Cole retrieved finally revealed why my parents hated Vicky so much.Trying to save money, Vicky used the company phone to call her mother, who was still living in poverty. She mocked Dad's age, said Mom kept a tight watch on him, and bragged that I would be easier to control.Vicky was disgusting. She tried to seduce Dad first, then turned around and seduced me.I was a fool. How could I ever believe that Iris had drugged me? She was such an innocent young woman. The drug had been slipped into my drink by Vicky when I was having dinner with her.Vicky had repaired her hymen surgically, and I believed her lie about wanting to give her virginity to me on our wedding night. She was desperate to marry into the Goldsmith family, so she use

My tone was distant and polite. I had never spoken to Ivan like that before.I said, "Ivan, in this life, I hope we can both be happy."Ivan lowered his head and said nothing. But his answer no longer mattered to me.The day Marcus visited our home was the same day his assistant Cole Gage finished reviewing the recordings.I never asked for the details. My resignation had already ruined Vicky's plan to climb the ranks in the company, and that alone made it worthwhile. My parents liked Marcus very much. Dad especially admired his business philosophy.Dinner ended on a cheerful note. After Marcus left, Mom pulled me into her room."Iris, after Ivan started seeing Vicky, I've been worried about you."My heart tightened. Had Mom been reborn, too?Seeing my shocked expression, Mom gently stroked my hair."Did you really think your father and I opposed their marriage so strongly for no reason? Of course we had our own concerns. Fortunately, you handled it well and found your own h

I was so angry that I raised my hand again, but just then Ivan appeared with Marcus, who was in his business outfit."Iris."Two voices overlapped.Marcus stepped forward quickly and came to my side.In his formal suit and with gold-rimmed glasses, he radiated elegance and a sharp, commanding presence. But I knew his sharpness wasn't directed at me.Ignoring Ivan's stern expression, I clung to Marcus.I said, "Vicky, look here. I have a boyfriend. He's taller, richer, and loves me more than Ivan ever could, and I love him too."Marcus' expression shifted from anger to quiet joy. Immediately, he straightened his posture without saying a single word."You think I don't know what your plan is? You don't want me working here at Goldsmith Group, and you don't want me too close to Ivan. Moreover, you're afraid that I'll use half of the family inheritance to meddle with the company and hurt your interests."I glanced at Ivan and smirked."So this is the kind of woman you like? You'd

Marcus was five years older than me, yet his way of loving someone was just as childish as mine.I turned and hugged him."Marcus, just be yourself. You don't have to be crazy just for me."He held me tightly."I'm afraid you'll think I'm old, boring, and full of that overly mature vibe."His tone was pitiful, and it made me laugh."Then I need to check exactly how strong this 'mature vibe' of yours really is."Marcus laughed, dodging my tickles. Being with him, I finally understood how wonderful it felt to be loved. But I had loved Ivan for a long time, and he only felt disgusted by my love.It seemed that his dislike for me was the source of the problem.I only realized when I started working at the company that, though Vicky held the title of administrative secretary, she already carried herself like she had become Ivan's wife. She bossed people around the office as if she held all the authority.I joined the project department as a low-level staff member and insisted th

Ivan demanded, "Are you avoiding me?"Was the question even necessary? For some reason, he looked angry."Do you really want to see me?" I asked back."As long as you don't have those filthy thoughts about me, I'll treat you like you're my real sister."I looked him in the eyes.I said, "I don't dare to, and I won't. My feelings for you had been burned to ashes during the fire in my previous life."He squeezed my shoulder until it hurt, but at those words, he let go without realizing it."You were reborn, too?" He continued, "So, you chose to avoid me? You plan to marry some random punk and ruin your life like that?"I couldn't read his expression. It held anger, regret, and a touch of frustration all at once."What punk?" When I asked that, he looked incredulous but excited."Is Mr. Hackett in your diary fictional?"But the Mr. Hackett I wrote about wasn't a punk at all. I had only written about the time he rescued me and our dates after that.Marcus and I wandered throu

Ivan had been so certain that I was adopted because in my previous life, I had been the one to make Mom tell him that he was their biological child. His marriage to me had been one of circumstance. I didn't want to taint our already imperfect relationship with obligations or forced gratitude, nor did I want our relationship to be further fractured.Vicky's eyes gleamed with calculation.Ivan understood what Dad meant. If the DNA test were to be done, it would mean that Ivan was determined to fight me for the inheritance, and the bond between us would be permanently severed.Ivan didn't agree to do a DNA test, not even when Vicky pushed for it. He just fixed his gaze on me.Looking into his eyes, I felt no ripple of emotion whatsoever. After that day, Ivan started coming home less often.Without his presence consuming my energy and mood, I felt genuinely happy again. My dates with Marcus became even better. He repeatedly insisted on coming over to meet his future parents-in-law.
