Chapter 4

Author: Hathaway
The next afternoon, Zayne's assistant, Rick Smith, came to the lab looking for me. "Ma'am, Mr. Ford would like you to join him for dinner tonight at Season Restaurant. He wants to see you."

I was caught off guard.

Season Restaurant.

It was a place I would never forget.

That was where he had missed our wedding anniversary because of a business meeting, and I had waited for him all night. I was silent for a long time, but finally nodded.

That evening, I arrived at Season Restaurant.

Zayne was already sitting by the window, dressed in a dark suit, his hair neatly combed back, wearing those familiar gold-rimmed glasses. He looked up when he saw me and gave a faint smile, as if nothing had ever happened.

"Wendy," he called my name softly, his voice deep and gentle.

Looking at him, my heart started pounding.

See? Even though I had decided to let go, all the feelings I had had for him over the years still lingered in my mind. My heart would still race when I saw him, and my cheeks would still flush out of shyness.

I walked over and sat down as he pulled out my chair for me, polite as ever.

Zayne looked at me with mixed feelings in his gaze. "Wendy, I want to talk to you."

"About what?" I asked.

He looked at me again, his eyes full of conflicting emotions. "Wendy, I know I've neglected you lately, but about Jane and me…"

Just then, his phone rang. It was Rick.

"Mr. Ford, Ms. Dunn just tried to slit her wrists."

Zayne shot up from his seat. "What?!"

Watching his reaction, it felt like I had been hit with a cold shower, snuffing out the very last flicker of hope I had. I thought he would finally be honest with me and explain everything that had made me misunderstand his actions.

But as soon as Jane called, he was still worried about her first.

That was his explanation.

That was what he meant by wanting to talk.

"Zayne, just go," I said, lifting my head and forcing my voice to sound steady.

He looked at me, a flicker of pain passing through his eyes. "Wendy, I'm sorry. I'll be back as soon as I can."

He turned and hurried away.

I watched him leave, my chest aching sharply.

Then, everything went black.

I had fainted.

When I woke up, I was already in a hospital bed.

The doctor was talking to Rick. When he saw me wake up, he looked surprised. "Ma'am, you're awake."

I nodded, anxious.

Would he tell Rick Smith about the pregnancy?

"Your body is very weak. You need to rest." The doctor's tone was a bit stern. "Also, you're preg…"

Cold sweat broke out all over me.

Just then, Rick's phone rang.

"Sorry, it's Mr. Ford," He answered and stepped out.

I breathed a sigh of relief and quickly called the doctor back. "Please, can you not tell them about the pregnancy?"

The doctor nodded. "Of course. That's your private matter."

A few minutes later, Rick returned. "Ma'am, Mr. Ford has an emergency. I'll be going now."

He left a credit card on the table. "Mr. Ford told me to leave this for you. If you need anything, just tell the doctor."

Then, he rushed out.

Lying in the hospital bed, my heart felt heavy as I stared at the ceiling.

During my hospital stay, I often overheard the nurses gossiping.

"Ms. Dunn is so lucky to have a husband like Mr. Ford."

"Yeah, he's so nice to her. He comes to see her every day and even cooks for her himself."

"They say Ms. Dunn will soon give birth to Mr. Ford's heir."

"Three months pregnant, I heard…"

Every word stabbed into my heart.

The real wife of the man they were talking about was me, but I remained unseen, and no one knew who I was.

A few days later, I was finally discharged.

The first thing I did was go to the courthouse to pick up the divorce approval judgment that had been approved and filed for a long time.

Holding the official papers in my hand, I took a deep breath and forced myself to stay calm.

I knew that once I took this step, there was no turning back.

But I also knew it was the only way I could be free.

I took out my phone and called the courier service, arranging for the official papers to be sent, but when I was filling in the shipping date, I purposely delayed it by three days.

I wanted to make sure that by the time Zayne received the divorce documents, I would already be in Nord.

I never wanted to see him or hear anything about him ever again.

Zayne couldn't take his eyes off me.He watched as I energetically moved around the research camp, discussing projects with my team and recording data with focus.Every time our eyes met, I saw the struggle and pain in his gaze.He finally understood. He tried to use his old logic to fix things, but soon realized that none of it worked here.He couldn't buy my forgiveness with money, nor could he force me to stay with power. Here at the research camp, he was just an outsider.Zayne closed his eyes in pain, overwhelmed by feelings he had never known. No matter how hard he tried, things could never go back. And I had already stepped out of his world and found my own light.Beneath

Both Zayne and Shaun cried out at the same time, but Zayne was faster as he rushed forward and caught me in his arms."What are you doing?" Shaun shouted angrily, trying to pull me away. But Zayne held on tight, his eyes resolute. "I'm her husband. I have the right to take care of her."In the chaos, I was carried into the medical tent. Zayne sat next to my bed, carefully warming a cup of milk for me. He tested the temperature, then gently held the straw to my lips. "Wendy, have some. It'll make you feel better."I took the straw and looked at his hands, now covered with scars but still so gentle. My feelings were all over the place. Those hands used to be my greatest comfort. Now, they were the source of my deepest pain.I drank the milk in silence.Zayne didn't say anything either. He just sat quietly, watching me.In the tent, the only sounds were our breathing and the warmth of the milk.A long moment passed. Finally, Zayne spoke, his voice low and rough. "Wendy, I know yo

I turned around, looking at him as if he were a stranger, my gaze cold and distant.Shock and pain were written all over Zayne's face, and his voice trembled as he spoke, "Wendy, it's me, Zayne…"My reply was cold and measured. "There's nothing left to say between us, Mr. Ford."By dawn, the rescue operation had shifted into recovery.Once again, Zayne blocked my path, his voice low and desperate. "Wendy, I know I made unforgivable mistakes, but you're pregnant! That's my child, too!"I looked at him, expressionless. "So? That doesn't change anything.""Please, just give me a chance to make it right," Zayne pleaded, almost begging.Still, I only gave him a frosty glance. "We're over already. Please leave.""Wendy, please… Look at me!" Zayne cried out in pain. But I turned my head away, unmoved. "How ironic…. When you were my entire world, you never cherished it. It's too late now."At that moment, Shaun arrived with a few security guards. Without looking back, I walked straig

Zayne grabbed the young blonde by the shoulders, his voice low and urgent. "Where is she? Where's Wendy now?"The young woman was startled by his sudden move, and it took her a while to mutter, "She… she left for Nord last week, for a research exchange program."Nord? The word sent a jolt through Zayne. He remembered mocking my application form previously. What had he said back then?"Nord? It's so cold there, the climate's terrible, you wouldn't like it."I had just lowered my head and gone silent.Thinking back, my expectation at that moment must have seemed like a joke to him. And now, I had truly gone to that place he had once laughed at.Zayne felt an unbearable pain in his chest, as if all his strength had been drained away. He let go of the young woman's shoulders, stumbling back a few steps. She looked at him with concern. "Sir, are you alright?"Zayne didn't answer. He just took a deep breath and left.By midnight, in his dark office at Ford Group Headquarters, Zayne

Zayne's fingers gently traced the seal on the divorce papers, his eyes filled with shock and regret. "How could this happen… How did I sign this…"Jane stood nearby, glancing at the divorce papers with a hint of disdain. "Come on, Zayne, don't worry too much about this. Wendy's just throwing a tantrum. She'll come crawling back to you in no time. She's just a poor student… There's no way she'll give up her sugar daddy so easily."Zayne suddenly looked up, anger burning in his eyes. "Shut up! She's my wife!"He shoved Jane aside in fury and stormed toward the door after he finished saying that.Jane stumbled, bumping into a glass vase. The vase crashed to the floor, shards scattering everywhere, like the pieces of Zayne's and my broken marriage.Zayne didn't look back as he rushed out the door and drove straight to my university. On the way there, all he could think of was me. Only now did he realize how little he knew about me. He didn't even know the exact location of my lab, le

Meanwhile, Zayne couldn't shake the uneasy feeling filling up inside of him. He felt like he had lost something important.By the time he snapped out of it, a motorcycle was speeding toward him at the intersection. He slammed on the brakes, tires screeching across the pavement.Jane, who was in the passenger seat, turned pale and screamed, "Zayne! What are you doing?! You're scaring me!"But Zayne couldn't be bothered to answer her. He suddenly realized it had been a long time since he had heard from me."Zayne?" Jane's voice sounded a little annoyed.Zayne came back to his senses, looking straight ahead."Sorry, I got distracted," He apologized as he slowly pulled the car over to the side of the road and stopped. He took out his phone and scrolled through our old chat history. The last message from me was the same one from nearly a month ago, which read, 'I'm going to be busy lately, so I'll be staying at the lab.'.A sense of dread crept over him as he searched for any new
