Chapter 7 Assassinate the prince

A few days later, Cheng Xiaoxiao felt that the atmosphere at the residence changed a lot. Due to a great deal of flapping going on in the sky, she kept worrying that the snow eagle had come back looking for her. She was on tenterhooks as she kept the baby bird in her arms.

But she realized that was not the case.

And it was flocks of pigeons that were flying overhead in the sky instead.

In ancient times, pigeons were used to send letters. The little birdie even kept happily tweeting whenever it saw the pigeons, but Cheng Xiaoxiao had an ominous feeling about it.

When she woke up today, she discovered that Chu Yunshen had surprisingly put her and the little birdie into a cage and placed them in a secret compartment under the bed.

Then she distinctly heard him unsheathing a sword.

Chu Yunshen’s bed was like a hidden arsenal. He had three daggers under his pillow. A sword was concealed in a gap on the bed. And the top of the bed was even made of black iron. It rivaled a president’s bulletproof car.

Since he was so combat-ready, something must be about to happen.

Cheng Xiaoxiao recalled him saying that Wu once sent assassins to kill him.

But why did Wu send him a lion cat as a part of their tribute? She couldn’t wrap her mind around it.

Perhaps they wanted her to harness the cat lover DNA in him and use her beauty to make Chu Yunshen turn against the country.

Then they honestly overestimated her.

He kept her locked during the day and slept with her at night. Who did he think she was?

Cheng Xiaoxiao was furious.

But looking at sharp knives around her, she felt it was wiser not to touch them carelessly.

She suddenly heard a very faint sound outside.

Someone had landed softly in the room and was looking around as he entered.

Chu Yunshen must be outside the room, dealing with his matters. The only things that remained in there was a baby bird that slept like a log after it ate and a cat who was idling away.

No one would come for her.

But in a moment, Cheng Xiaoxiao would realize she was sorely mistaken.

The man clearly knew Chu Yunshen’s room well. Without messing it up, he went straight for the bed as planned. He turned some mechanism, and with a swish, the unknown man appeared before her eyes.

The man was dressed in a guard’s uniform, but his face was masked by a black cloth.

It was broad daylight, but he sneakily concealed his face. He must either be an adulterer or thief.

His eyes brightly flickered when he spotted her. Then he reached his hand towards her. But before he got to her, a row of sharp blades suddenly ejected from in front of the cage.

The man almost cut his hands, so he shrank back with fear lingering in his heart.

Cheng Xiaoxiao was stunned. So when Chu Yunshen clanged about in the room on his own recently, he was actually installing concealed weapons around her cage!

The man refused to give up. Then he twisted a bottle open and poured its contents onto her!

As Cheng Xiaoxiao wasn’t in time to dodge, all the unknown fluid landed on her head. She immediately had a bad feeling about this stuff, so she hurriedly covered her eyes and mouth. When she sniffed it, there seemed to be a shred of nectar scent coming from it.

“Little fellow, this stuff is very precious. Don’t let us down. Lick it all up,” said the man softly. But he didn’t stay and closed the secret compartment instead.

When Cheng Xiaoxiao suddenly felt her body going limp, she got a shock. What was this? It was probably poison!

In the time it took for Chu Yunshen to sip some tea, Xiaowu hurried back after attempting to catch the spy.

“Master, forgive me, but the spy has escaped,” said Xiaowu as he knelt and begged for forgiveness.

Chu Yunshen narrowed his dark eyes slightly and the hand holding the teacup paused. Then he took of a sip of tea and raised his head to order coldly, “Get someone to keep investigating.”

“Yes, Your Highness!” replied Xiaowu before walking out the door. But as he was about to leave, Chu Yunshen’s cold voice came from behind once again, “Get someone to come over and clean up.”

Xiaowu’s hand paused in mid-air while he was reaching for the door. He turned back to follow Chu Yunshen’s gaze to see that the room was chaos. Also, the lion cat that Wu sent as a tribute was in a mess and had curled up by the corner of the bed.

The lion cat didn’t seem hurt. So did the spy take such a huge risk just to dirty His Highness’ pet?

Xiaowu thought as he shut the door slowly.

Cheng Xiaoxiao was in a daze. She felt as though she was floating like duckweed in a pitch-black place. Without any idea how long she had floated or what direction she was going, she simply kept floating aimlessly.

Until…

“Xiaoxiao?” a nice low voice came through the darkness. It seemed to be saying something and sounded like her mother when she woke her up by calling her pet name, ‘Xiaoxiao, it’s time to wake up’.

Was that her mother?

Cheng Xiaoxiao couldn’t help going towards the voice.

Kill him, Hupo!

A white light flashed by. Cheng Xiaoxiao shivered and suddenly opened her eyes. Then she darted out like an arrow zipping through the air!

Chu Yunshen heard a sound from outside the room. When he went towards the bedroom, he realized the little fellow had woken up.

As he looked at the dirty ball of fur, Chu Yunshen halted outside the bedroom and rubbed his temples as he said, “Have you woken up?”

At the sight of the little fellow walking towards him all covered with sticky fluid, Chu Yunshen retreated and chided loudly, “Stay there and don’t move!”

“Meow!”

She replied with a whimpering meow, which resembled the sound of a baby crying.

Chu Yunshen then discovered something amiss with her.

The little fellow had her back hunched over the ground with her sharp claws fanned out. Her eyes were half covered by her fur and were shockingly blood-red.

When Chu Yunshen saw her bloodshot eyes, he furrowed his brows tightly and became on his guard. Then he steadily walked towards the sword hanging on the wall.

Just as he reached for the sword hilt, a white silhouette flashed past him, and he heard wind whipping by. As he hesitated for a mere second, he felt a sharp pain on his right cheek. Then warm blood trickled down from his angular face and flowed down into his slightly open shirt collar.

Chu Yunshen let out a stifled moan. He raised his hand to wipe his cheek and saw the crimson red blood on the back of his hand. The little fellow had surprisingly…

He was so furious that a murderous air sprang from his eyes.

Then the strangest scene unfolded.

The little fellow who had pounced on him with all her might turned suddenly and hastily rammed into a pillar next to them with a loud thud. The sword in Chu Yunshen’s hand paused.

The acute pain made Cheng Xiaoxiao wake up.

Hupo! Kill him!

Cheng Xiaoxiao looked miserable from the fall. Then she dragged her trembling body towards Chu Yunshen, step by step like a zombie. Her body was so shaky that it looked as though she could get swept away by a light gust of wind.

Even then, that voice refused to let her off. Cheng Xiaoxiao felt as though her teeth were dying for some action, and she wanted to bite someone!

Cheng Xiaoxiao’s bloodshot eyes suddenly made eye contact with Chu Yunshen’s dark eyes.

No!

She couldn’t let that voice have its way. When Cheng Xiaoxiao finally regained some control of her body, she suddenly raised her paw and hurled it onto the ground hard!

THUD!

The piercing sound of bones cracking made Chu Yunshen slowly put down his sword.

Did the little fellow hurt itself so that it wouldn’t harm Chu Yunshen?

The crimson blood on the ground triggered Cheng Xiaoxiao so much that she became more manic. She couldn’t help clawing the ground with all fours and hunched her back on the floor while she prepared to attack.

There was a turbulent wave surging in her chest as her eyes turned hot. Then her sharp claws clawed so hard on the ground that there were streaks of blood on the ground.

Kill him!

The man’s voice was so deeply emblazoned on Cheng Xiaoxiao’s mind that she felt her brain was about to explode! There was only one thing she desired, and she wanted to bite someone!

At this moment, a thud came from outside the door and caught Cheng Xiaoxiao’s attention!

Cheng Xiaoxiao swallowed the pain to turn in its direction.

The ground next to Xiaowu was wet as a wooden basin rolled by his feet.

“Master! Who hurt you?” Xiaowu had just brought a wooden basin of water over and was planning to clean the prince’s pet. The moment he entered, he caught sight of the wound on the prince’s face as he held his sword and looked at something warily.

He threw aside the wooden basin immediately to raise his sword and stand in front of the prince.

“Who dares harm Master!”

Xiaowu took a closer look and saw those bloodshot eyes.

Was it that lion cat?

Her previously chubby paw were now unrecognizably mangled as it hung over the pool of blood before her.

Xiaowu’s face blanched as he stood in front of Chu Yunshen and straightened his back to say, “I will kill her right away!”

“Xiaowu!”

In a twinkling, Chu Yunshen suddenly blocked Xiaowu’s blow and flicked his wrist hard. Then the sword that Xiaowu was attacking the white cat with came falling on the ground with a thud.

Xiaowu went completely stunned.

Chu Yunshen sheathed his sword coldly and said, “Get Mu Bai to come over.”

Mu Bai?

Chu Yunshen wasn’t asking Xiaowu for any ordinary physician but the prince’s personal doctor, Mu Bai.

Xiaowu instantly understood the severity of the matter, so he swiftly bent over to pick up his sword and said, “I will go get Doctor Mu now.”

Doctor Mu was the disciple of the Medicine King from Ghost Valley. After he finished his apprenticeship and came down the mountain, he started working for the prince.

All the years while the prince was in the army, Doctor Mu managed to save him from the gates of Hell several times. So he was second to the prince in status in the prince’s residence.

On the bluestone path in the prince’s residence, a man wearing a snow-white robe with a white silk headdress on his head followed behind Xiaowu.

The man was stunning, and his eyes were as bright as stars. In his hand, he carried a medical kit with exquisite decorative carving on it.

“Xiaowu! Are you saying that His Highness was hurt by a cat?” Mu Bai was holding onto his white headdress as it was almost coming loose while he carried the medical kit and followed hurriedly behind Xiaowu.

He couldn’t believe that the prince who could knock down a war horse with his bare hands on the battlefield could get hurt by his pet kitten.

“Doctor Mu, you’ll know when you get there!” replied Xiaowu resentfully. The moment he recalled that the prince was still alone with the culprit in the room, he couldn’t help frowning. So he sped up even faster.

“Master, Doctor Mu is here.”

Xiaowu stood outside the door. Then he turned back and gestured to Doctor Mu for him to enter.

When Mu Bai entered the room, Chu Yunshen had his back facing him and was confronting the cat with a sword in hand.

The cat’s eyes were blood red, and there was an unknown sticky fluid on her body.

He immediately got a shock. Then he hastily put down his medical kit and took out a piece of fine cloth before walking over to Chu Yunshen to say, “Your Highness, let me take a look at your wound.”

As Mu Bai used the fine cloth to wipe the blood off Chu Yunshen’s face, he examined the wound for any complications.

Fortunately, it was a superficial injury.

So Mu Bai, who was beside himself with anxiety, then went back to normal.

The moment his anxiety subsided, Mu Bai reverted to his usual talkative self.

“Your Highness, you might get a scar from the wound.” Although he kept chattering, he was careful when he handled the wound on Chu Yunshen’s face. But he just couldn’t stop teasing, “It looks like Your Highness will no longer be the most handsome man in the capital.”

“Mu Bai,” said Chu Yunshen as he raised his hand to take the fine cloth from Mu Bai and pressed it against his wound. Then he eyed Mu Bai to look at Cheng Xiaoxiao instead, “Take a look at her first.”

Mu Chen was surprised as he followed Chu Yunshen’s gaze. Was that cat the culprit?

“I only examine humans.”

Chu Yunshen narrowed his dark eyes. Then Mu Bai decided to stop pushing his luck as he instantly said, “Of course, I do occasionally examine cats and dogs out of charity.”
