Zerah

I wiped at my face with the back of my hand, but the tears kept falling like they had a will of their own. My body was still shaking from earlier, my breath catching in short, broken rhythms that I couldn’t control no matter how many times I inhaled deeply.

Ryker hadn’t moved from where he stood, hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable, like always.

“Where are they?” he asked again, voice firm but not loud. “The files. The ones you were working on that made you late.”

I blinked through the blur in my vision and looked at him. He said it like I owed him an explanation. Like I was some intern who’d forgotten to staple a report.

“I already told you,” I muttered, trying to swallow the lump in my throat. “I emailed them this morning.”

“I didn’t ask if you emailed them in,” he snapped, taking a slow step toward me. “I asked to see what you’ve been working on. The physical documentation. Everything.”

“Why?” I croaked. My voice cracked, but I didn’t care anymore. “What differenc

Zerah “There’s something I want to show you,” I said quietly. Before I could continue however, he seemed to notice something from the distance and stepped back. He turned to me with raised eyebrows. “Hold on a second,” he said, “There’s someone I need to talk to really quickly. I’ll be right back.” He turned away and walked off as though he'd found a jackpot. For a moment I stood frozen, glass in hand. My head was spinning, but there was no doubt. Was this really happening? I had met someone in less time than I expected that would help me. In a shorter time than I'd expected, I was getting somewhere. Time passed as I waited and I counted the minutes. The soft music and the laughter and chatter of the others roamed around me. more distant at the same time. Thankfully nobody came to approach me but I only felt myself grow more antsy. My legs were starting to ache from just standing in one spot, and my nerves were on edge. I shifted my weight from one foot to the other, feeling

ZerahWhat the hell?Like a reflex, a wave of revulsion wracked me from the inside out. What was James Robinson doing here?I blinked, hard and frantic, hoping that I'd misheard. When I looked up at the stage again however , my belly churned. He came forward with a horrid proud smile on his rotund face. The way he shook hands with the announcer and grabbed the mic like he owned the whole damn room… It was really him.A scream built up in my throat. I wished I could let it out.More than that, I wanted to walk up that stage, snatch the mic from him and reveal his nature as a hypocrite and abuser in front of everyone. But I couldn't. I had to hold on, no matter how disgusted I felt.As the woman left, he was left alone on the podium.“Good evening, everyone.” He spoke, “First off, I want to say what an honor it is to be standing here. I didn’t expect to be invited, let alone as a special guest. I mean, it is truly an honour.” He laughed into the mic, and some people chuckled along.

ZerahSunday evening came faster than I expected.I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection as I applied a final layer of gloss on my lips. My makeup was simple but clean. I didn’t want to do too much. I wasn’t going there to steal attention. I had one goal and one goal only, to find a journalist. Someone real, someone honest enough to carry a story like Elena’s without twisting it into a circus headline. The dress I picked was sleeveless and navy. It stopped just above my knees. It wasn't flashy but it wasn't dull either. It was just enough to walk into a crowd and not feel invisible. I had taken my time in the bathroom earlier, letting the warm water run down my back, hoping it’d wash away the nerves. It didn’t.Just when I was halfway done with my makeup, Ryan and Micah had burst into the room, their little faces lighting up the way they always did.“Where are you going, mommy?” Micah had asked as he crawled onto my bed.“Can we come with you?” Ryan stood beside the

RykerAlice’s room was at the end of the hall on the second floor, the same spot it had always been. Her door would be unlocked as usual, I knew I could simply knock and she would open it.Yet, I hesitated, stopping in front of it. I didn't even know why. Perhaps it was the guilt that ate me alive that kept me stalling. Perhaps I was just tired. But if there was anything I knew, it was that I had to see her.I knocked twice. After a few seconds, her voice came through.“Come in,”Taking a deep breath and braced myself before I opened the door and stepped in. The faint scent of lilac and vanilla wafted into my senses immediately as the light revealed the place.I knew the place like the back of my hand, although not for the reasons others would believe. Sometimes, when the pain from her treatments were too much, she would plead with me to stay over until she fell asleep. I would always agree, waiting until I was sure she was at peace before returning back to my penthouse or work. It

RykerI stared at Nathan for a long second, water dripping from my face, my palms pressed against the edge of the sink. I grabbed the towel, wiped myself down, and finally muttered again, “I came here to visit my Aunt and Uncle. You were the one that barged into this room.”He scoffed. It was a bitter laugh that followed right after. “You know what I’m talking about. After what you've done.” he spat.“Honestly, I don't. At this point, you could be referring to a million things. You’ll have to be specific,” I said, drying my hands.Nathan stepped further into the bathroom and closed the door behind him. I could already tell this conversation wasn't going to be good, for both of us.As he leaned in, I braced myself for what he was going to do or say next. Perhaps punch me or threaten me again. It could be either or both.He did neither though, eyes narrowing.“Why do you want to make a public apology?” he asked.Surprise twinged in me. So he'd heard.I let out a small breath before I

RykerI sat staring at nothing in particular. The familiar furniture and air of the Falloway mansion pressed down on me. This place… it used to feel like home, it still did. Growing up here made me who I was today. I could still perceive the scent of aged wood, leather polish, and that lavender air freshener my Aunt always loved, nothing had changed since the last time I was here.My fingers wouldn’t stop tapping against my thighs. Sometimes fast, other times slower. I couldn’t stay still. I had no idea what to expect. I was just waiting, but for what exactly? For comfort? For forgiveness? For some sense of direction? The house was quiet, but not the comforting kind. It was heavy, like it knew the weight of what I was carrying. Upstairs, I could hear the faint creak of footsteps. They were coming down.I stood up before I even thought about it. It was my aunt, Mrs Holloway. She reached me first. Without saying a word and pulled me in. Her arms wrapped tight around me, like they
