Chapter 2

Perfect Timing
I went to the office anyway. It had been a long time since I had set foot there. The place barely looked the same.

The receptionist, Amanda Crew, immediately greeted me, “Good morning, Mrs. Freeman!”

I frowned. “Mrs.? Why are you not calling me Ms. Freeman?”

Amanda’s expression stiffened. Around here, Carter was the one everyone considered the head of the company.

I decided not to make things difficult for her. “I heard there was a new receptionist. How come I don’t see her?”

Amanda seemed reluctant to tell me.

“Amanda, I may not be involved in the day-to-day operations anymore, but I still have the authority to fire people.”

Terrified, Amanda quickly explained, “Mrs. Freeman, Mr. Freeman personally transferred her to his office this morning. She is his executive assistant now.”

He was so impatient. He could not even wait.

I headed straight upstairs. Every “Mrs. Freeman” I heard along the way grated on my nerves.

Outside Carter’s office, I could hear laughter coming from inside.

I entered without knocking. Neither of them looked the slightest bit startled.

The young woman, Nikki Harris, actually smiled and walked over to greet me. She said, “Oh, hi! What brings you here, ma’am?”

“Ma’am?” I repeated in confusion.

Carter, however, put on a serious face. “Nikki, why don’t you step outside for a minute?”

Instead of lashing out of the spot, I sneered and said, “Carter, did you tell that girl I was your mother? Go on then, call me ‘Mom.’ Let’s hear it.”

Carter’s expression darkened. “She made the assumption herself. I’ll clear it up with her. What are you doing here?”

Since when did I need permission to enter my own father’s company? “I came to work, of course.”

To my surprise, Carter did not try to stop me. “Fine. Go ahead then. I’m taking some time off.”

He grabbed his jacket and walked out the door.

It did not take long for me to understand why Carter had agreed so easily.

No one in the company would listen to me.

No matter what I tried to do, no one cooperated. As I walked past the break room one afternoon, I overheard the employees talking about my sudden return.

“Why can’t she just stay home and enjoy her life? What does she even know about running a company?”

“Exactly. Old Mr. Freeman had real vision. Look how well Mr. Carter has done.”

“Money is supposed to make people look better, right? Well, she has neither the looks nor the presence. Honestly, Carter deserves a medal for not divorcing her.”

Determined to regain control, I threw myself into work without rest. Fortunately, one of the company’s long-time veterans remained loyal and helped me. With his support, I managed to land a major contract.

At the weekly all-staff meeting on Monday, I was about to announce the good news when I heard a commotion outside.

“This is terrible! Ms. Nancy’s deal just blew up! The company is looking at losses in the millions!”

I immediately opened the company’s records on my laptop. It was true.

I turned to look at that veteran employee. A triumphant smile spread across his face.

Before I could even confront him, a sharp, stinging pain exploded across my cheek.

I pressed a hand to my face. The arm of Ben Russell, my father’s old friend, was still raised from the slap.

“How did Mark end up with a daughter this incompetent? Not only have you failed to hold on to the company he built, but you’ve also cost us millions! Is this a business or your personal playground?”

Before I could respond, another slap landed across my other cheek.

“Since Mark isn’t here to do it himself, I’ll teach you a lesson on his behalf. Pack your things and get out. If you pull something like this again, don’t expect me to show you the same kindness I have in the past.”

“It wasn’t me.” I pointed directly at the employee. “You should explain what really happened.”

That old veteran put on a wounded yet innocent expression. “Ms. Nancy, you can’t push the blame onto me just because something went wrong. I’ve devoted decades of loyal service to this company. I’ve never suffered such humiliation. Mr. Russell, if this is how things are done now, I can’t continue working here.”

That only infuriated Ben even more. “Mark made the right decision all those years ago. Starting today, you are not to set foot in this company again.”

With Ben’s verdict, I could no longer remain at the company. As I carried my things out of the building, I felt as though I had been stripped naked and paraded through the streets for public humiliation.

Everyone was pointing fingers at me and whispering things.

“I told you she was never qualified for this job. Look at her now, slinking out with her tail between her legs.”

“She should just stay home and raise kids. Trying to play the independent businesswoman was a joke. Who knows how many late nights we’ll need to work to clean up this mess? She’s a walking disaster.”

When I got home, Carter was sitting on the couch in high spirits, waiting for my return.

He already knew everything that had happened.

Carter could not suppress his smile. He handed me a document. “Nancy, take a look at this.”

As I watched the police car carrying Carter away, I pulled my hand free from Wyatt’s.Wyatt looked confused. “Nancy, I know that you still have feelings for him. After all, you’ve been married for years. But that’s okay. From now on, I’ll be here for you.”I smiled. “Be here for me? What about your wife then?”Wyatt instantly tensed. “What are you talking about? You haven’t married me yet. How could I have a wife?”I pulled out my phone. The smiling couple on the screen was impossible to ignore.Wyatt took a step toward me, but I had moved away. “Nancy, I can explain. She and I don’t love each other anymore. Just two more days and the divorce will be finalized. Just wait for me a little longer.”Wyatt saw the look on my face, the look of someone who had known all along. Understanding dawned on him. He said with disbelief, “You knew all along. You were using me to deal with Carter. Now that he is gone, I have no more use to you, is that it?” The last few words came out as a shout

Back at the family estate, I turned to my father.“Dad, what is that about?” One look at his ashen face told me how furious he was.“Ever since I began to suspect that that jerk wanted to swallow our family’s enterprise, I started investigating. Now, I have finally uncovered the truth.”We had that receptionist, Nikki, to thank for it.She was still young. It did not take much pressure before she started talking.“While Mr. Carter and I were on vacation, he told me that rich people make the dumbest decisions. Instead of trusting their own daughters with their fortunes, they’d rather give them to outsiders. So, he decided to help things along. He paid off Mr. Mark’s nutritionist, and after that... Mr. Mark... Mr. Carter said that we were the same kind of people—that we came from the bottom and have spent our lives struggling.”For more than ten years, he had enjoyed every luxury imaginable. What exactly had he been struggling through?Wyatt walked into the room with a grim expres

As I had expected, the very next day, Carter came to the front gate of our family estate. It was just like ten years ago. When he saw me come out, Carter shuffled forward until he reached me. “Nancy, we’ve been married for ten years. We had a good life together. We shared so many wonderful memories. Do those years really mean nothing to you?”“Carter, I had no idea you suffered so much all these years. How difficult it must have been to put up with an old, unattractive wife like me, to run every aspect of Freeman Group, and to enjoy everything my family gave you. Carter, you married into my family. What exactly gives you the right to stand here asking for forgiveness?”Perhaps the phrase “married into my family” struck a nerve. He lunged over.“Nancy, your vicious nature has not changed at all. Who cares if I came from a poor family? That doesn’t give you and your father the right to look down on me. For all these years, you called me your husband, but what was I really? A servan

To be fair, he really had treated me well over the past ten years. For ten years, he had never once raised his voice at me.Whether it was the company or our home, he handled everything flawlessly, big or small. For ten years, there had never been another woman around him. That was why the appearance of that iced coffee had felt so sudden and out of place. If he had been a little more patient, the company really might have been his today. What a pity. In the face of his true intentions, everything else had become a joke.I stared at him coldly, as though seeing him for the very first time.“Carter, do you have the guts to repeat what you said that day in front of Dad?”Cold sweat broke out across Carter’s forehead. “Nancy, I was only joking. Isn’t it completely normal for a married couple to argue now and then?”I walked over to him and lowered my voice. “No, it isn’t. No one uploads videos of their wife online.”Carter’s eyes widened. “You heard that?”Not only did I hear i

The familiar voice made me turn around at once. The moment I saw who it was, tears instantly welled up in my eyes. After ten long years, my father had finally woken up. “Dad!” I cried out and ran straight to him. This whole situation felt unreal. I truly felt as though I were dreaming.I held my father’s hand, feeling its warmth. “Dad, you’re not dead. That’s wonderful.”My father patted my head. “It’s okay, Nancy. Let me deal with that jerk for you!”My father stepped forward. Carter’s legs had already turned to jelly. He put on a fawning voice. “Mark, how wonderful. You’ve finally woken up. You have no idea how much Nancy and I have prayed for your recovery all these years.”“Did you pray for my recovery, or did you pray for my death?”Carter’s expression grew strained. “For your recovery, of course.”Wyatt stepped forward and struck Carter across the face.Carter flew into a rage. “Who do you think you are? How dare you hit me?!”When he looked at the contempt in our
