Chapter 3

Author: Penny Phelps
Olivia stood up, letting out a mocking laugh. "Let's make a bet. The person he cares about now is me!"

With that, she threw herself backward and tumbled down toward the stairs. Instinctively, I reached out to grab her.

The voice of a man cut through. "Olivia!"

Brian, who was supposed to be at his office, burst through the front door. He caught her at the very last second, wrapping his arms tightly around her.

Olivia's face had gone deathly pale as she clutched his collar. She whimpered, "Brian, I don't know how Lena found out about this place. Don't blame her. None of this is her fault. She only did it because she loves you too much."

Brian looked up, glaring intensely at me. "Lena, why are you here?"

I stared back, not yielding an inch. "I should be asking you the same question. Don't you have anything you want to explain to me?"

His eyes flickered with guilt. But suddenly, Olivia struggled out of his embrace and bowed to me.

"Mrs. Stanton, I'm sorry!" she said bitterly. "Please don't blame Brian. It's all my fault. I couldn't bear to lose my child, so I begged him to let the baby live. If you want to blame someone, blame me!"

She raised her hand and began slapping herself—a scene that made Brian's heart ache.

He hauled her back up and roared at me, "Enough, Lena! All these years, I've been walking on eggshells just to accommodate you! I've already failed Olivia and our child. I won't keep hurting them just for your sake."

He bent down, scooped Olivia up in his arms, and carried her out. I watched their retreating figures, utterly silent.

...

At the hospital, Esther squeezed my hand. "Are you sure about this?"

I closed my eyes, my hand resting gently on my lower abdomen. "I don't want my child to grow up in a broken home."

I released Esther's hand and walked straight toward the operating room, never once looking back.

...

At home, Brian was sitting on the sofa.

Hearing me walk in, he shot to his feet, rushed over in a few quick strides, and wrapped his arms around me.

"Lena, where did you go?" he said eagerly. "I've been waiting for you for so long."

I wasn't in the mood to care why he was suddenly back. I simply pushed him away. "If you're here to interrogate me, just get on with it. Cut the act."

Brian released his embrace, but his hands moved to grip my shoulders, his eyes alight with hope. "I saw the pregnancy test in your bag. You're pregnant! We're finally going to have our own child!"

He smiled like an idiot, reaching his hand out toward my belly. I took a step back, leaving his hand hovering in mid-air. Yet, his excitement didn't wane. "You have no idea how ecstatic I am. This is the symbol of our love."

"The symbol of our love?" The words felt sickeningly ironic.

I quietly pulled an envelope from my bag and placed it on the coffee table. Brian froze, then opened the envelope to find a surgical consent form inside.

Printed across the page were the words: [Termination of Pregnancy Procedure. Patient: Lena Stanton.]

The smile vanished from his face as his skin turned completely pale. He looked up at me, his lips trembling for a long moment before he managed to squeeze out a single sentence.

"You got rid of our child?"

I didn't say a word.

He lost control, roaring at me, "When did this happen? Why didn't you tell me? Why did you do this?"

I stared back at him, my voice perfectly level. "Because I didn't want him to grow up in an unhappy home."

For five years, he had been submissive in front of me. I had truly believed I could trick myself into pretending none of it had ever happened.

I had swallowed my absolute disgust to play the part of a perfect, doting wife. Yet, the moment I saw Olivia and that boy, beneath all the grief, a wave of profound relief had washed over me.

Finally, the charade was over.

Brian collapsed, his voice trembling violently. "Lena, hit me, scream at me, please... We're still young. Even if this baby is gone, we can have another one."

He wrapped his arms tightly around my legs, crying out in desperation. This scene was identical to the one five years ago, but my heart wouldn't soften again.

I looked down at him. "Do you really think I'm foolish enough to trip over the same stone twice?"

He shook his head frantically. "No! No, Lena, the one I love is you! They... were just an accident!"

I took out the divorce agreement from my bag and laid it right in front of him. "Let's end this, Brian. I'll let your family be whole. Now, let me go."

"Lena, please, just give me one more chance, okay?" Brian pleaded bitterly. "I know I've made so many mistakes, but we've been together for so long. Can you really just throw our entire history away?"I only strayed with Olivia because I was looking for a thrill. You know she has my child, so I couldn't just abandon her overnight. But I swear to you, you have always held a completely different place in my heart."The moment I go back, I'll send her away. I promise you'll never have to lay eyes on her again. Please, just give me one more chance, alright? I love you, Lena. We can start over. We can have another child together."His expression was agonizingly earnest, and a few genuine tears rolled down his cheeks. I had to admit, this was the most pathetic, unraveled state I had ever seen Brian in.In my memory, he had always been a man of absolute dignity and immaculate polish. He had never looked like this—wearing the same wrinkled, disheveled clothes for days, his frame looking sl

Brian grabbed his coat and stormed out of the house. The first person he thought of after crossing that threshold was me.If I had been there, things would never have blown up to this extent. Only now did he finally realize just how incredibly well I had treated him.He began to see that every corner of his life was saturated with traces of me; he had long since become completely dependent on my presence. The day of our court hearing arrived quickly. A couple who had once been entirely inseparable now sat on opposite sides of the courtroom. I looked into Brian's eyes, but my heart didn't feel even a single ripple. My affection had already been worn down to nothing by the endless waves of betrayal. Having lived through all of this, I had finally seen the light. The love I felt for him in the past was genuine, but the disgust I felt now was just as real. Brian had indeed accompanied me through a massive portion of my life, but I couldn't allow a few crumbs of past sentimentality to

I looked at those comments and let out a soft, bitter snort. Did they really think the real world operated like a romance novel?I admitted that Olivia and Brian had once shared real feelings years ago. But Brian's devotion to me over the last five years had been just as real. I just wanted to see who he loved more.Brian was growing increasingly anxious. The internet was practically forcing him to marry Olivia. In the eyes of the online mob, Olivia was his tragic true love, the girl who had always lived in his heart. If he didn't marry her now, he would be branded as entirely cold and heartless. Yet, when it came to marrying her, a profound reluctance tugged at his heart. The years he and I had spent building a life together couldn't be easily replaced. He quickly called me. "You saw those posts, right? None of it is true. Olivia isn't my true love."I gave a cold laugh. "I know. She was just your underclassman from college, right?"I had only just uncovered this piece of inform

Just thinking about the faint hint of perfume that had clung to Brian every time we were intimate over the last five years made me gag.Right then, my phone rang with an unknown number. The voice on the other end was shrill and furious, punctuated by the sound of objects being smashed in the background."You shameless whore!" Olivia hissed. "Brian and I already had a child together. Back then, you forced your way in and stole the title of Mrs. Stanton, forcing me to live in the shadows."And now, what kind of spell have you cast on him? Why is he refusing to marry me?"I hadn't expected the situation to unfold this way. I had assumed that once Brian and I parted ways, he would immediately marry Olivia. After all, if he didn't love her, why would he let her keep his child? Why would he abandon me at home just to be with her? But if he did love her, why was he refusing to give her a legitimate name?No matter how much I turned the question over in my mind, I couldn't find an answer

Finally, I stopped crying and gritted my teeth. "I'm going to make him pay!"Though Brian had treated me well over the years, I had been impossibly devoted to him in return. In the eyes of everyone we knew, we were the ultimate fairy-tale couple. Our story began in college; he fell for me at first sight, pursuing me with a relentless, fierce devotion. Melted by his attentiveness to every little detail, I harbored the naïve dream of spending the rest of my life with him.I threw caution to the wind, ignored my parents' desperate warnings, and traveled thousands of miles across the country to marry him.I had truly believed we would grow old together. I never could have anticipated that another woman had been lurking in the shadows of our lives all along. The thought of Olivia and her child spoke of the elaborate web of lies Brian had spun for half a decade. I clenched my jaw so hard it ached. I wanted nothing more than to strip away his flawless façade and expose the betrayal under

Brian didn't even look at the divorce agreement. He snatched it from my hands and tore it to shreds.I couldn't comprehend what he was trying to achieve. Wasn't getting rid of me what he wanted?"I've supported you for all these years and given you such a luxurious life," he growled, his face twisting. "Everything you have right now came from me? And now you want to leave me? Do you even have a heart?"His outburst didn't faze me. It wasn't that I lacked a career or had to depend on him to survive.Years ago, Brian had developed a severe stomach condition from the relentless stress of his job. When his health took a dangerous turn, the doctor warned me that he needed proper, home-cooked meals and an absolute routine to recover. At the time, both of our careers were on the rise. After agonizing over the decision, I chose to sacrifice my future to become a housewife, spending my days revolving around him and the kitchen stove. It was only after his company finally stabilized that I
