~MIA’S POV~

My eyes flew open the moment I realized what was happening.

What did Robert mean by “Aren’t we married?”

Hell no! There’s absolutely no way I’m spending my first night with him in a motel like this—when we aren’t even...

I couldn’t stop myself. As he moved to pull down his trousers, I tossed what I was holding aside and rushed forward, gripping the waistband tightly.

“Please don’t… not like this. I’m not ready, please…” I begged, my hands trembling as I held onto his trousers.

“At least… let our night be romantic. Let it happen after the trip—when we’re back on the mainland… or maybe when we get to Los Angeles… or…”

I was still babbling when his lips crashed against mine, cutting me off in an instant. I froze. My grip on his trousers tightened as my eyes fluttered shut. I couldn’t process what I was feeling—my heart was thundering, my breath caught between disbelief and confusion.

When he finally pulled back, I stood there speechless, stunned. The kiss was brief, but God,

  • The mysterious Billionaire's Wife; a lost heiress.   110: Distance

( Mia POV)I ended up at Anita Trade and Investment.Work had always been a refuge. Something I could control when everything else spun out of reach. My assistant looked surprised to see me. "Miss Cops. I didn't expect you today.""Change of plans. What's on the schedule?""Board meeting at two. Conference call with Tokyo at four. And you have several messages from Mr. Ryder."Collins. Of course."Put him through if he calls again."I buried myself in work. Financial reports. Strategic planning. Merger discussions. Things that made sense. Things with clear answers. My phone rang at noon. Collins."Hey," I answered. "Sorry I haven't called back.""It's okay. I figured you were busy." A pause. "Or avoiding me.""Little bit of both.""Want to grab lunch? Or is that too complicated right now?"It was too complicated. Absolutely too complicated. But I said yes anyway. We met at a quiet restaurant away from downtown. Somewhere neither of us would run into business associates or reporters or

  • The mysterious Billionaire's Wife; a lost heiress.   109: An offer by James

(Mia POV)I didn't leave the mansion that night.Couldn't bring myself to walk out the front door with Robert watching, his expression a mixture of desperation and resignation.Instead, I found myself in one of James's guest suites. Third floor. East wing. Far enough from the dining room that I couldn't hear Sophia's laughter or James's calculated conversations."You can stay here tonight," James had said when I'd appeared in the hallway, bag in hand. "Tomorrow we'll discuss more permanent arrangements."More permanent arrangements. Like my marriage was already over. Like it was just a matter of logistics now.Robert had followed me upstairs. Watched silently as I unpacked the few things I'd thrown together. A change of clothes. Toiletries. The book I'd been reading to Nel.Not enough for a real departure. Just enough to prove a point."How long are you planning to stay here?" he asked finally."I don't know. Until I can think clearly. Until you figure out what you want.""I want you.

  • The mysterious Billionaire's Wife; a lost heiress.   108: Poison

(Robert POV)I drove for hours. No destination. Just movement. Putting distance between myself and the image burned into my brain.Collins Ryder kissing Mia's cheek. Her hand pressed to the spot where his lips had been. The intimacy of their body language. The way she'd looked at him.Like he was safe. Comfortable. Easy.Everything I wasn't anymore. My phone kept buzzing. Mia calling. Texting. Leaving voicemails I couldn't bring myself to listen to.I'd told her not to come home. Sent that text in a moment of rage I immediately regretted but couldn't take back.Except she had to come home. Nel was there. Mrs. Cara. The house was hers as much as mine.I was being irrational. Childish. Letting jealousy cloud my judgment. But God, seeing another man's lips on her skin had nearly destroyed me.By the time I finally drove home, the sun was setting. Golden light painting everything orange and red like the world was on fire.Appropriate.I found Mia in Nel's room, reading to him. Some book a

( Mia POV)I couldn't go back to the office. Not after seeing Robert's face. Not after watching him walk away like I'd physically struck him.I stood on the sidewalk outside Bellini's, my phone clutched in my hand, staring at his text.*We need to talk. Tonight.*Three words that felt like an ending."Mia?"I turned. Collins stood a few feet away, concern etched across his face."I thought you left," I said."I did. But then I saw your expression and came back." He moved closer. "Are you okay?""No. I don't think I am.""What happened?"I gestured vaguely across the street. "Robert was there. He saw us. Saw you holding my hand. And now he thinks..." I couldn't finish the sentence.Collins's expression darkened. "He thinks we're having an affair.""Maybe. I don't know. Everything is so complicated right now." My voice cracked. "I can't breathe, Collins. I feel like I'm drowning and everyone keeps adding more water.""Hey." He touched my arm gently. "Come on. Let's walk. You need air."

  • The mysterious Billionaire's Wife; a lost heiress.   106: The friend Returns

(Mia POV)The email came on Friday morning.I was at Anita Trade and Investment, reviewing quarterly projections and trying to focus on anything except Robert's growing distance, when my assistant buzzed."Miss Cops? You have an email marked urgent from a Collins Ryder. He says he's an old friend."Collins Ryder. The name hit me like a punch to the chest.I hadn't thought about Collins in months. Not since before the contract marriage. Not since my old life had exploded and rebuilt itself into something unrecognizable.Collins had been my friend in college. Maybe more than a friend for a brief moment before I'd realized we were better off platonic. Smart. Ambitious. Kind in ways that made you forget how calculating he could be.I opened the email.*Mia, I heard about everything. Richard, the inheritance, everything you've been through. I'm so sorry. I'm back in California now, working as a senior prosecutor. If you need legal help with Anita Trade and Investment, or anything else, I'd

  • The mysterious Billionaire's Wife; a lost heiress.   105: Cracks Forming

( Mia POV)Robert was slipping away. Not physically. He still came home every night. Still slept beside me. Still kissed me goodbye in the mornings before heading to JR Investment. But emotionally, he was somewhere else. Somewhere I couldn't reach. It started small. Subtle enough that I almost missed it.A phone call he took in another room, his voice low and tense through the closed door. A meeting he left abruptly, muttering something about an emergency. Papers he quickly shuffled out of sight when I entered his study.Small things. Explainable things.Except they kept happening."Is everything okay?" I asked one evening over dinner. Nel was at a friend's house for a sleepover, giving us rare privacy. "You seem distracted.""Just work stuff." Robert pushed food around his plate without eating. "The Oscar situation is getting complicated.""How complicated?""I don't want to burden you with it.""Robert, we're supposed to be partners. Your burdens are my burdens.""I know." He reache
