Dove

The coat check was tucked into an alcove near the entrance, a long counter with a rail behind it holding a hundred coats. There was a young attendant behind it who looked bored and hot and about nineteen, wearing a simple white mask covering her eyes.

I made myself smile at her. The old smile, the soft, harmless one that gets you what you need.

"Hey. I’m sorry, I think someone's being sick in the ladies' room," I said, breathless, gesturing vaguely back toward the crowd. "Like, really sick

DoveThe dress ripped open with a long, slow sound, and I felt the cold air of the room on my back.I couldn't move. My hands lay curled on the velvet couch like somebody else's hands. My face was pressed into the cushion, turned sideways, and I could hear him behind me, fumbling, breathing hard, the shift of the couch as his weight came down on me, and none of it, none of it, did my body answer. The only thing I could see was the door. That was all. A rectangle of dark wood across the room, closed and locked, with a thin line of red light bleeding under it from the hallway. I stared at it because staring at it was the only act left available to me in the whole world.Please.I prayed. I'm not sure I've ever really prayed before, not properly, not since I was twelve and it didn't work then either. But I lay there with my cheek in the velvet and I begged God and my mother and anyone at all.Please. Please, somebody. Please. And underneath the praying, the flat dead truth I couldn't get

ElioThe room upstairs was everything I'd spent three months building toward, and I couldn't hear a word of it.It was the private salon at the top of the club — soundproofed, guarded, the good brandy out. My father at the head of the table, expansive and gracious, working the room the way I'd watched him work rooms my whole life. The councilman on his right. The port authority man. The judge who'd taken off his mask because in a room like this the masks come off; here, among the people who actually decide things, you show your face, because your face is the point. They were talking about the pipeline. The whole apparatus of it, laid out clean and legal-looking across the table — routes, permits, the customs windows that would quietly stay open, the inspections that would quietly not happen. My father kept glancing my way, presenting me, this is my son, this is who runs New York now, and each time he did I said the right thing in the right tone and watched the men nod.It was perfect

DoveThink. Think, think, think. The room was small, velvet couch, low light, a bar cart against the wall, no windows, nothing on the walls but shadow. The door was locked and Gio stood in front of it. There was nothing in here to save me. So the only thing left was time, and the only way to buy time was to talk."Wait," I said.Gio raised an eyebrow. He'd stopped loosening his tie."Just — wait. Please." I made myself breathe. Made myself smile, small and shaky. "You don't have to do it like this. We could just — talk. For a minute. That's what you told your brother, isn't it? That we were going to talk."For a second, I thought he'd laugh at me.Then, to my astonishment, he shrugged and stepped away toward the bar cart. "Sure," he said easily. "We can talk. We have all the time in the world."Relief flooded through me so hard I nearly sat down. Keep him talking. Every second is a second. Maria will realize you're not coming. Elio will realize. Somebody will realize."How old are you

DoveGio pulled me through the crowd, and I let him, and I hated myself with every step.We passed a woman in a raven mask laughing with her head thrown back. We passed the long table with the silver girl still lying motionless among the ice. We passed men who could have stopped this with a word and would never have thought to, and I kept my face empty and my mouth shut, because Elio's whole world was in my purse and on a camera and in Gio's hand. And then I saw where we were going.Up ahead, past the end of the bar, the door with its little sign. EMPLOYEES ONLY. The same door I'd fled through the night my life ended — the red hallway, the dim lights, the doors along the side with their soft terrible noises. The secret VIP rooms, Elio had called them once. The rooms we prepared for the things people do in private. My legs stopped working. Gio had to pull me."Come on, sweetheart—""Gio."The voice cut across the noise like a blade, and my knees nearly went out from under me with relie

"Like, really sick. Nobody's helping her. I don’t know who to ask, but I think she needs someone."The girl's face did exactly what I hoped it would: irritation, then duty, then resignation. "Seriously? Again?" She was already coming out from behind the counter. "Third time tonight. Watch the desk for me? Two minutes.""Of course," I said. And then she was gone into the crowd, and I was alone. My hands were shaking so badly I could barely lift the counter hatch. I slipped behind it, into the narrow space between

DoveI didn't recognize myself. The maids had spent three hours on me. My hair was up, twisted into something soft and elaborate with a few strands left loose at my temples, and they'd worked concealer into every bruise on my arms and shoulders until the ugly purple simply vanished. Like it had never happened. Like nobody had ever thrown me down a staircase. My skin was smooth and beautifully gold-dusted.And the dress. It fit like it had been poured on. Liquid gold, falling from my shoulders to the floor, catching every particle of light in the room and throwing it back. And the mask over my eyes, delicate gilded filigree, turning my face into something that wasn't quite mine. When I looked in the mirror before we left, a stranger looked back at me. I looked like a girl who belonged in a place like this. That made me swallow hard.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *I didn’t know what I was expecting to see at The Gilded Cage. I guess I was expecting so
