CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

THE SON OF THE KING

Ryan’s POV

(Twenty-two years ago)

“I hate you.”

Selene said those words while standing in the middle of my bedroom, holding one of my pillows against her chest.

I looked up from the book in my hands.

“No, you don’t.”

She narrowed her eyes.

“You’re so annoying.”

“And yet, you keep coming back.”

She threw the pillow at my head.

I caught it before it could hit me, laughing as she marched toward the bed.

“You promised we’d spend the entire day together,” she

CHAPTER 55THE KING’S MATEPOV: IslaThe first thing I felt was pain. Not the sharp kind that made you scream, but the heavy kind that seemed to have settled inside every bone in my body. My head throbbed, my muscles ached, and even breathing felt like something I had to concentrate on.The second thing I felt was warmth.Someone was holding my hand.I tried to move my fingers, but they barely responded. My eyelids felt impossibly heavy, and when I tried opening them, the light hurt so badly that I immediately squeezed them shut again.“Isla?”That voice. My heart recognized it before my mind could catch up.“Isla, sweetheart? Can you hear me?”Ryan.I tried to answer, but my throat felt like sandpaper. All that came out was a weak, unpleasant sound.“Oh, Moon Goddess.”The hand holding mine tightened.“Open your eyes for me, love. Please.”I wanted to tell him to stop sounding so scared because it was making me scared too.But apparently, my mouth had decided to stop cooperating with

CHAPTER 54THE LAST RED CRESCENTPOV: IslaJoin me.The words echoed inside my head.I stood before the Vyren, unable to move, unable to look away from its six glowing eyes. The battlefield had disappeared. There was no Ryan shouting my name. No soldiers fighting. No sound of weapons clashing against scales. There was only darkness. And the creature.Join me, Red Crescent.I swallowed.“Get out of my head.”The Vyren lowered its three heads until their enormous faces surrounded me.You have spent your entire life searching for a place to belong. My heart skipped.Your family abandoned you. Your cousin betrayed you. The man you loved chose another woman. Even your own power remained asleep inside you, leaving you weak while others laughed.“Stop.”Then you found a king who loved you.A picture appeared in the darkness.Ryan.He stood in front of me, wearing his royal uniform, his expression cold.Behind him were the ruins of Crescent Estate. His hands were covered in blood. And now you

CHAPTER 53THE GIRL WHO REFUSED TO DIEPOV: IslaThe first thing I learned about fighting a monster was that it didn’t care how brave you were. The second thing I learned was that bravery could get you killed. And the third?Well, I was still trying to figure that one out.“ISLA, LEFT!”I barely had time to turn.A massive claw swept through the space where I had been standing a second earlier. I threw myself onto the ground, rolled over broken stones, and scrambled to my feet just as the creature’s claws smashed into the courtyard. The impact sent dust flying into my face.I coughed, blinking furiously.“Okay,” I muttered. “That was a little too close.”You are talking again. My wolf sounded unimpressed.I talk when I’m scared. You talk when you are breathing, walking, eating, and sometimes when you should be paying attention. Now is really not the time to criticize my personality. The Vyren roared. My wolf went silent.Fair enough.I lifted my head and stared at the creature. It was

CHAPTER 52THE KING WHO CAME FOR HERPOV: RyanThe first scream reached us before we saw the fortress. It came from somewhere beyond the hills, followed by a deep, earth-shaking roar that made the horses beneath us panic. One of them broke away from its rider and galloped into the trees.Nobody laughed.Nobody even spoke. We all knew what was waiting for us.The Vyren.I tightened my grip on the reins, staring at the thick cloud of smoke rising beyond the hills. The sky had turned an ugly shade of grey, and the air carried the smell of burning wood, blood, and something unfamiliar.Something ancient. My wolf paced restlessly inside me.She’s there.I didn’t need him to tell me.The mate bond had been pulling at my chest for the last twenty minutes. It wasn’t a clear voice or a map leading me straight to Isla. It was something worse.A constant awareness that she was somewhere ahead of me.That she was alive. That she was afraid. And that I couldn’t reach her.“Your Majesty.”Magnus ro

CHAPTER 51WHEN THE WORLD BEGINS TO BURNISLA’S POVThe first thing I heard was screaming. The second was a sound so loud that the walls around me shook.I opened my eyes. For a few seconds, I couldn’t remember where I was. My head hurt, my chest felt like someone had placed a burning stone inside it, and my wrists were trapped in the same horrible metal restraints. Then I remembered.Aarav.The ritual. The creature. My mark.“Oh, Moon Goddess,” I whispered. The floor trembled beneath me.A terrible roar came from somewhere above, followed by the sound of metal crashing against stone. Dust fell from the ceiling and landed in my hair.I tried to stand, but my legs were too weak.My wolf stirred inside me.“Get up, Isla.”I’m trying.“Try harder.”That is very easy for you to say when you’re not the one with metal handcuffs cutting into her wrists! She went quiet for half a second. Then she replied, “Would you prefer I take over?”Absolutely not.Despite everything, I almost laughed.Al

CHAPTER 50THE BEAST WITH THREE HEADSKING AARAV’S POVThe ground shook beneath my feet.A low growl travelled through the stone walls, making the lamps flicker. Somewhere deep beneath the fortress, something enormous dragged its claws across the floor.I smiled. After centuries of waiting, after years of searching for records that my ancestors had hidden and destroyed, we were finally here. The Vyren was waking up.And this time, I would not make the mistakes of the men who came before me.“Your Majesty.”I turned.Oren stood several steps behind me, holding a thick folder against his chest. The old man had served my family for more than twenty years, and I had tolerated his presence for almost as long. He was intelligent, experienced, and useful when he remembered his place.Unfortunately, he had developed a habit of questioning me at the worst possible moments.“What is it?” I asked.“The final preparations are complete. The handlers are waiting for your approval.”“Then give it.”
