Chapter 47 – Bite the Hand That Trains You

Eli

I hate sparring.

Or more accurately, I hate getting my ass handed to me in front of half the pack while Jace shouts 'helpful' advice like, 'Use your agility!' and 'Come on, Eli, you're not dead yet!'"

Hazel just slammed me into the dirt hard enough to make me see stars, and I’m ninety percent sure there’s a bruise blooming across my ribs in the shape of her elbow.

I almost don’t mind, because she didn’t even hesitate. Didn’t flinch. Didn’t treat me like I was fragile or off-limits just because I’m the Alpha’s pet project. It makes for a refreshing change.

Or maybe she just hates me. Who could blame her? At least my glowering mate is out of sight.

I push myself upright, dirt clinging to my skin, lungs heaving. Jace offers a hand and I glare at it. "Don’t say something motivational."

"Wasn’t going to," he says. "Just keeping you from getting buried under all that pride."

He’s hilarious.

Hazel offers me a nod of respect, which is way more than I deserve, and moves to the edge of the

RonanHe calls me a liar and I want to bare my throat and bite his all at once.I should step away. Button my shirt. Pick up the maps and put the world back into lines. Instead I crowd him into the table again and run a hand down the curve of his back. Slow, possessive, not gentle.“You acted like an imbecile when you went to the quarry alone,” I say, and the sentence is a growl. It’s also a confession. I cannot let go of the image of him vanishing into a hole in the earth with Loran behind him.“I came back,” he shoots over his shoulder.“And if you hadn’t?”“Then that would’ve proved me right.”It’s insane. It’s Eli. The part of me that rules with teeth wants to cage him. The part of me that doesn’t have a name wants to lay down and let him crawl under my ribs and live there.Neither part wins. The Alpha does.“On the bed,” I tell him.He moves like a challenge. Eyes not leaving mine, deliberate, slow, the kind of beautiful that ruins kingdoms. I follow, shedding the rest of my rest

Eli The next morning the quarry’s cold is out of my clothes, but not my bones. After breakfast I slam the cabin door with more force than necessary and toss my jacket onto the chair. It misses and slides to the floor. Fitting. Ronan doesn’t look up from the map spread across the table. He doesn’t need to; he felt me the second I hit the porch. He always does.“You seem pissy,” he says, voice even.“You’re impossible,” I shoot back, and it lands like a knife in soft wood. “I told you what I saw. You looked me in the face and called it smoke.”“I called it what it is without proof.”“Right,” I say, laughing once. “Because nothing is real until it survives a council table.”He lifts his gaze. Wolf-gold, steady, infuriating. “Do you want me to gut my own ranks in front of them with nothing but your word?”“I want you to trust me.” The words rip out before I can sand them down.Silence knifes the space between us. He studies me like I’m a border problem. Calculate, contain, move on.“I do

EliI don’t tell Hazel I’m going out.I should. She’s the only one who never makes me feel small. But there’s a smear on the inside latch of the lodge side door. Soot where there shouldn’t be soot, and the mark matches the powder I tucked under my drawer handles this afternoon. Someone was riffling through my things for a second time, and I’m done playing polite. The night is cold enough to bite. Breath ghosts from my mouth as I slip past the kitchens and across the yard, keeping to the dark seams between cabins. The snow crunches softly under my boots, the sound swallowed by the trees beyond the stockade. I pause at the fence, scenting the wind.I’m sure it’s Loran’s smell before I even see him.He moves ahead of me in the dark like the night wants him. He doesn’t hurry. He doesn’t look back. It’s not carelessness, that would insult him. It’s arrogance, pure and simple. The forest closes around me, all ink and bone. I track him by sound and shadow, by the brief catch of moon on h

RonanMy men stand stiff in the cold, the scent of agitation hanging heavier than the smoke from the torches. I don’t need Jace to tell me something is off. The supplies are gone. Not misplaced, vanished. And the patrol routes are a mess. Routes overlap where they never should. Areas are left unprotected. Precise, deliberate lies are being circulated. My gut says sabotage. My wolf says blood. But my head? My head reminds me that if I name it aloud without proof, I’ll split Blackthorn from within. That’s exactly the fracture our enemies would gorge themselves on.I dismiss the patrol with clipped orders and carry the scent of deceit back into the heart of the keep.Snow melts against stone and skin as I push into the hall, past wolves who look at me too long, then away too quickly. By the time I reach my office, the storm outside feels quieter than the one inside my chest.Eli waits for me, draped against the arm of my chair like he owns the place. Legs crossed, lips pressed thin. His

EliSnow has a way of telling stories you’d rather not hear. It remembers. Holds the shape of every trespass, every step that shouldn’t be there.Which is why I’m standing outside the cabin before the sun’s even scraped the treeline, staring at the imprint of boots that don’t belong to Ronan. The prints are shallow, made by someone light on their feet. Not my huge, hulking, stubborn asshole of a mate.I follow the tracks toward the forest, boots crunching through the crusted snow. The wind bites my cheeks, and every exhale curls in front of me like a warning. The trail peters out under the thicker pines, where shadows swallow the ground. I crouch, fingertips brushing a faint scuff mark. Someone pivoted here, fast. Then… nothing.A twig snaps behind me and I spin, shoulders tense. It’s Hazel, cheeks pink from the cold. “You’re out here early,” she says.“Couldn’t sleep.” Her gaze flicks to the boot prints. She doesn’t ask whose they are, which tells me she’s already guessed and doesn’

EliIt’s the sound that wakes me.Not loud. Not the kind of crash that says thief. More like a drawer being opened in slow motion, the wood groaning a protest. My brain takes a second to process it, caught between sleep and the instinct that’s been drilled into me since I was old enough to survive on my own. Someone’s where they shouldn’t be.The fire in the hearth is a low glow, barely throwing light past the edge of the bed. Ronan’s side is empty, sheets cold. He was up before dawn for patrol, which means the only person in here should be me.Except there’s a shadow at my dresser.I hold my breath, heart thudding in my throat. My clothes are a mess at the best of times, but I know the sound of fabric being moved through like a scavenger hunt. Whoever it is, they’re quick and quiet. If I didn’t grow up having to be terrified of sounds in the night, I may have slept right through it.The figure freezes. For a second, I think I’ve been made. Then there’s a faint creak from the hallwa
