Chapter 2

Two days after, I wore a white wedding dress

I was so tight that I could not breathe properly, my ribs hurt and the air was too heavy.

My heart rang so hard in my ear.

“Ready?” someone asked behind me.

No

“Yes,” I whispered.

The word left my mouth like a lie.

___

The ballroom was so full.

I took small steps down the long aisle, and I walked carefully so that I would not trip.

I heard some whispers and followed me as I walked down the aisle.

“Who is she?”

“She is not even from here.”

“She must be after his money.”

“He deserves better.”

“Is she pregnant?”

“Lucien Stone married her?”

I pretended not to hear them at all , but the words kept getting into me and then I saw him.

Lucien.

He was at the end of the aisle and was handsome as always, but his eyes were hard.

He watched me walk toward him without a single smile. There was no softness or welcome.

Just silence.

I stopped in front of him and forced myself to look up. His eyes met mine and the priest began to speak.

Lucien didn’t look away, he didn’t blink.

“Do you, Lucien Stone, take Elena Rivera”

“I do,” he said quickly, like he was checking a box. It was flat, cold. It was like this was just another deal to him.

The priest turned to me and I swallowed.

“I do,” I whispered.

Our voices hung in the air.

We exchanged rings and his fingers were steady. He slid the ring onto my hand like it meant nothing.

My fingers shook when I did the same and the priest announced us as husband and wife.

People clapped and cameras flashed.

Lucien leaned close, his lips brushed my cheek. It was not soft, nor sweet.

And then a warning.

“Don’t mess this up,” he whispered so only I could hear.

I faked a smile for the photo and I felt some sharp pain in my tummy.

___

Later that evening, we arrived at his penthouse.

“You will stay here,” Lucien said without looking at me. “There’s a guest room at the end of the hall.”

I blinked. “A guest room?”

He turned his head just slightly. “You didn’t think we would share a bed, did you?”

“No,” I said quickly, too quickly and he gave a short nod. “Good.”

He disappeared into his office and shut the door and the sound echoed.

I stood alone in the middle of the living and

I felt like I just made the biggest mistake of my life.

__

At midnight, I sneaked out and I changed into jeans, a hoodie, and a cap.

I pulled the hood low over my face and I entered into a cab and kept my eyes on the window.

At the hospital, I used the back entrance and the night nurse knew me, she just nodded and I opened the door. There were no words and I stepped inside the room.

Jace was fast asleep.

My heart wanted to rip away from my chest when I saw him.

He was looking so small, and so still. He held his bear firmly to his chest and I heard the deep sound from his breathing.

I sat beside the bed and stroked his hair.

“Hi, baby,” I whispered. “Mommy’s here.”

His eyes fluttered open and one eye peeked at me.

“You look like a princess,” he mumbled.

I smiled and my throat burnt. “I’m your princess, okay?”

He nodded, his eyes already closing again.

“Did you bring me juice?” he whispered.

“Tomorrow,” I promised. “I will bring your favorite.”

He nodded again and his breathing evened out. He was asleep before I could say more.

I stayed there for a long time, and watched him sleep.

I brushed his cheek with my fingers.

“I did this for you,” I whispered. “Everything. Mommy’s going to fix it, I swear.”

__

When I left the hallway was quiet.

I stepped out and almost crashed into someone.

“Whoa,” a deep voice said and I froze.

He was tall, broad, strong jaw, rugged and clean-cut.

It was Hunter.

Lucien’s best friend.

He looked surprised. “Elena?”

I smiled quickly, it was too quickly. “Hey.”

His eyes flickered past me, to the door I just came from. “What are you doing here?”

I lied. It was fast. “My friend’s son is sick. I was just visiting.”

“At this hour?”

“She was scared to come alone.”

He watched me and he didn’t believe me but felt it.

“You’re married now,” he said quietly. “You should be with Lucien.”

I felt some sharp pain in my chest. “Yeah… I was just heading home.”

Hunter didn’t move and his eyes just stayed locked on mine, it was like he wanted to say something more.

I walked past him before he could.

My heart raced fast.

__

When I got back, the sky was turning light blue. I opened the penthouse door quietly and walked in slowly.

To my surprise, Lucien was awake, he was sitting in the kitchen, and he held a  white mug.

Steam curled up from his coffee and his shirt sleeves and his hair was a little messy, like he had been awake all night.

He didn’t even look surprised.

“Where were you?” he asked, not angry. He was just a bit curious, like he already knew I was lying.

“Just… went for a walk.”

He took a slow sip of coffee and then he picked up his phone and the screen lit up and a message popped in.

His eyes scanned it and his jaw tightened, but he did not say anything, he just kept staring at it.

There was silence between us and I felt cold, exposed and scared.

I turned away slowly and walked toward my room.

Don’t ask.

Please don’t ask.

I closed the door gently and I pressed my back on the door.

My heart beat fast and my palms became very wet

Please don’t let him know.

Please… not yet.

Elena’s POV The world felt different this morning, it was cold, quiet and heavy. When I woke up, my phone wouldn't stop vibrating. At first, I ignored it, but the sound kept coming and I reached for it and froze. My name was everywhere, every news page, every gossip site and every comment.“Lucien Stone’s wife was caught in an affair before marriage.” Leaked photos: Elena and an unknown man in a hotel. My hands shook as I scrolled faster, hoping it was fake, but the pictures…They were real and were old.I could still remember that night. It was before I met Lucien. It meant nothing. But now… it looks wrong. My stomach twisted and I felt dizzy. Who would do this?I heard Lucien’s steps before I saw him. He walked into the living room, dressed in his usual suit, calm and sharp as ever. His phone was in his hand too, he must have seen it.“Lucien,” I said softly, but he didn’t answer.I stepped closer. “It’s not what it looks like. Those photos are old. Someone..m”He finally look

Lucien’s POV The Silent TrapThe morning after the party, I sat in my office and the city stretched in front of me, bright and calm, but my head was not. Daniel’s calls from last night wouldn’t stop replaying. The ransom money came from Madelina’s foundation account.I still couldn’t believe it. Madelina was my step mother, she was like my mother. But Daniel’s report sat open on my desk and every number matched and every transfer led back to her charity.I pressed my fingers against my forehead and exhaled slowly. “No,” I whispered, “It has to be a mistake.”My phone buzzed and it was Daniel again.“Lucien,” he said quickly, “I checked twice. It was real, the same line, the same amount. Someone used the foundation to move the ransom money.”I closed my eyes. “Don’t tell anyone. Not the finance team, not even the board. Keep digging quietly.”“Got it,” Daniel said. “What do you want me to do next?”“Follow the movement,” I answered, “If the money moves again, I want to know before any

Elena’s POVMorning came heavy, I sat by the window, still in the same clothes from last night, my head hurts and my eyes were swollen. I heard voices downstairs, his and someone else’s, it was soft, and too close.I stood and slowly walked out of the room. My feet were weak and the house was quiet, but something didn’t feel right and I felt eyes on me.When I reached the top of the stairs, I paused, there was a shadow in the hallway. Someone moved quickly past the corner. My chest tightened and I whispered, “Who’s there?” But there was no answer.I clutched my phone tight and kept walking, every sound was loud, the ticking clock, and my heartbeat, even the rustle of my hair.In the kitchen, I saw a cup on the counter, it was Lucien’s.Then I heard faint laughter from the living room, a woman's voice, it was familiar, smooth and cold.I moved closer and the sound grew clearer.“Lucien, I’m only here because I care,” she said and my blood ran cold. That voice.I stepped into the doorw

Elena’s POVThe air in the house was heavy and Lucien's silence cut deeper than any word, he didn’t shout, he didn’t question, but every time I moved, I felt his eyes on me, watching, measuring, knowing. At breakfast, he barely touched his food, the sound of the spoon against his cup felt too loud.“Did you sleep?” I asked softly. He looked up, and his eyes were unreadable. “You?”I nodded even though I didn’t and my hands shook under the table. He nodded once and said nothing more, the silence stretched between us like glass, it was clear, fragile, ready to break. When I left the dining room, I felt his gaze follow me and every step I took felt watched.I went to my room and shut the door and my phone vibrated at once and my chest tightened when I saw the number, it was the kidnappers again.A message flashes on the screen. “He knows. Keep quiet, or your son dies tonight.”I dropped the phone and my whole body trembled and tears filled my eyes. “Please, not my baby,” I whispered.I

Lucien’s POVShe froze when I said her name and the moonlight fell across her face, showing the fear in her eyes.“Elena,” I said again, walking closer. “What are you doing in my office?”She stepped back, clutching the edge of my desk. “I..I was just looking for you.”“Looking for me?” My tone was sharpened. “While ransacking my office? In my locked office?”Her eyes darted to the drawer behind her, then back to me. “I heard a noise. I thought you were here.”I stopped in front of her, close enough to see her breathing fast. “Don’t lie to me.”“I’m not lying,” she whispered.I grabbed her wrist gently but firmly. “Then tell me what you were really doing.”Her lips trembled. “I….I can’t.”My patience snapped and I pulled her closer, my hand on the desk beside her, she gasped softly as her back hit the table.“Who are you working for, Elena?” My voice dropped low. “You think I won’t find out?”Tears filled her eyes. “Lucien, please, it’s not what you think.”“Then make me understand.”

Elena’s POVI couldn’t stop shaking when I stepped out of the taxi. The hospital stood tall in front of me.I kept my hood low as I walked inside, my heart beat fast, afraid someone would recognize me. I shouldn’t be here. If Lucien found out, he would lose control, but I couldn’t sit and wait anymore. I needed to find my son.A cleaner was mopping the floor near the nurse station. He looked older, with a tired face and kind eyes.“Excuse me,” I whispered, and stepped closer. “Were you here that night… the night a little boy was taken?”He looked up sharply, his mop stopping mid-air. “You mean the missing child? Yes, ma’am. Everyone here still talks about it.”My throat tightened. “Do you remember anything? Please… anything at all.”He sighed and looked around, making sure no one was listening and then he leaned closer. “There was something strange that day. A woman came before it happened. Well-dressed. Expensive perfume. Blonde hair.”My stomach dropped “Blonde?”He nodded slowly. “
