Chapter 271 Blame Lay Where It Belonged

Author: Rosie Steppe
"Honey!"

Eric hurried over and gently wrapped his hand around Rosalyn's cold hands.

"If you want revenge for Julia, I can—" He thought she was unhappy with how he handled the situation with Wanda and Nancy.

"Julia isn't coming back," Rosalyn murmured.

No matter how remorseful those two women were, and no matter how they were punished, it would not change the fact that Julia was gone.

Blame lay where it belonged. The root of the problem was never a few loose tongues—it was the photos. Those photos were what pushed everything forward and were the final blow that hastened Julia's death.

"Rosalyn, we're sorry, we—" the two women rushed over to apologize.

"Get lost!" Eric uttered.

Before Rosalyn and Eric even left, the two women were escorted out of the nursing home.

Inside Platinum Club's VIP suite, the lighting was dim and moody. The wine shimmered with a somber red light in the glass.Eric lounged against the leather sofa with his legs crossed, and his fingers tapped idly against the rim of his glass. He looked relaxed, but there was a solemnness in his eyes. When Sean pushed the door open, this was exactly the scene he walked into.He raised a brow and sauntered over. "Well, well. What's this, Mr. Hammond? Dragging me out in the middle of the night to drink your sorrows away?"Eric didn't even look up. "If you don't feel like drinking, get out.""What's with the temper?" Sean wasn't offended. He poured himself a drink and dropped into the seat across from Eric. "Let me guess…"He narrowed his eyes. "You and Rosalyn had a fight?"Eric shot him a cold glance. "You've been talking too much lately."Sean grinned. "Knew it."He swirled his glass. "So even the mighty Eric gets dumped? Wife walks out and you don't even dare say it out loud, h

Eric's fingers tightened around the steering wheel, and his knuckles turned white. He stared at Rosalyn standing on the steps. Dark, turbulent emotions surged in his eyes."Divorce?" He chuckled and pushed the car door open before walking toward her. "Mrs. Hammond, did you forget something?"Rosalyn didn't move. The wind lifted her hair, veiling half of her pale face.Calmly, she pulled a document from her bag and held it out to him. "Here's the divorce agreement. I don't want anything."Eric didn't take it. His gaze dropped to her scraped knuckles that were still bleeding a little, and his gaze darkened. "What happened to your hand?""It doesn't matter." She withdrew her hand. "If there's no issue, just sign it," she said nonchalantly."I promised Grandma that I'll take care of you," he said hoarsely. "The three months aren't up yet. I won't sign it."Rosalyn looked up at him with a blank expression. "Grandma is gone.""So you're in a hurry to cut ties?" Eric stepped closer.

"What do you need the property manager for?" Sean asked in confusion.Eric didn't answer. He only said, "You can leave now."That was a clear dismissal.Sean didn't move. "Sophia hasn't finished looking around yet."He tilted his head toward her and called out, "Sophia, do you want to head back? I'll take you.""Nope. I want to hang out here a bit longer," Sophia replied. Sean raised an eyebrow at Eric. There was a 'see, not my fault' look on his face.Eric narrowed his eyes but said nothing more. Soon, the property manager knocked on the door. "Mr. Hammond, you asked for me?""Can doors in this complex be unlocked at will?" Eric asked coolly. The property manager immediately started sweating at the forehead."Of course not, Mr. Hammond. It's not—""Then try to recall when the unit across from mine was unlocked." Eric's gaze was cold. The manager's sweat trickled down his forehead. "That's due to our negligence, Mr. Hammond."As the man tried to explain, the chill in Eric's

"She isn't answering her phone. If she were, would I be this anxious?" Eric's brows were deeply furrowed. He had already called Rosalyn more than a dozen times. Every call went unanswered. That was exactly why his thoughts kept spiraling. But the moment he finished speaking, Sophia broke into a grin. "Where are you, Rosalyn? We're right outside your door."Eric and Sean exchanged a look. They then both turned to face Sophia."Oh, you're not home? Eric's freaking out. He thought you might do something reckless. He even called a locksmith."Sophia parroted his words while looking straight at Eric, sticking her tongue out at him as she put the call on loudspeaker.Rosalyn's voice came through. "Try breaking my lock if you dare."She sounded cold yet fierce.Sean pursed his lips tightly, afraid he'd laugh."Honey, where are you?" Eric asked."The research institute. I'm here to see Laura!" She cut to the chase. It clicked instantly for Eric. How had he not thought of that?Rosa

"Eric, I was just—"Sean had just picked up Eric's call when Eric cut him off mid-sentence."Get a locksmith. Immediately.""Huh?" Sean froze for a second. "Whose lock are we talking about?"Eric stared at the door in front of him. What flashed through his mind wasn't the door, but Rosalyn's face. She was devastated but still looked extremely calm.He had never been able to describe that feeling before. Now he knew the words for it. It was a grief so deep that the heart went numb.Rosalyn and Julia had depended on each other greatly, with Julia being her lifeline. Now that Julia was gone, Eric was terrified Rosalyn might lose the will to go on.The thought alone sent a wave of panic through his chest, and he wanted nothing more than to smash the door down right now.But kicking doors in was something CEOs did in fictional novels, not him. He didn't have that kind of ability."Camphor Garden. Send someone over as soon as possible," Eric said coldly.Sean, forever incapable of
