Chapter 2

Author: Three Gos
I could not accept it.

"Why are you here?"

I was dozing off when I heard some noise at the door.

When I walked out, I found my parents had returned. However, Kayla was still standing at the door when I opened it, her face as pale as death. "Mom, listen to me. I really love Nate..."

Before she could finish, my mother interrupted her. "You love Nate? If you love him, would you abandon him on the wedding day to see another man? If you love him, would you leave him there to be humiliated by others?"

Kayla opened her mouth to speak, but eventually said nothing and only looked at me in desperation.

"Nate, can't you give me another chance for our five-year relationship?" Kayla's eyes were red as she pleaded.

"You remember our five-year relationship? We were together for five years, but you never definitively picked between Andrew and me."

Kayla blinked, feeling a bit guilty. "I... He... He's ill."

I had heard this sentence countless times before, but now I could not help wanting to laugh when I heard it again.

My father pulled my mother in and patted my shoulder. "Come in and talk. Don't disturb others' rest at this late hour."

I shook my head. "There's nothing to say. Just settle our accounts, and we can transfer the money directly."

After saying that, I closed the door and cut off Kayla's explanation outside.

My mother looked at me, hesitant to speak, but my father eventually said, "Now that things are clear, we need to move on."

I nodded in agreement.

Kayla's text messages kept coming in, begging for my forgiveness.

She and Andrew were high school classmates. Her family was not well-off, but she was very ambitious. Every time she talked about her parents' oppression and control, I pitied her. Her parents had controlled everything about her since she was little, from her studies and friendships to her food, clothing, and daily necessities. Thus, I always tolerated her, trying my best to make her feel warm and free, after we got together.

Looking back now, I was trapping myself.

Kayla always felt that if she showed weakness and revealed her wounds to me like before, I would forgive her. She was too familiar with playing the emotional card.

Kayla's parents also called me, first scolding Andrew and then praising me.

I just smiled and told them to get a quotation for the house renovation as soon as possible. Otherwise, I would have to find someone to do it myself.

Even if I were a complete fool, I would not keep making the same mistake with the same person.

However, I found the house already occupied when I led people to get it appraised.

An unfamiliar couple looked at me in confusion. "We've already bought this house."

I thought I had gone to the wrong place, so I looked again to confirm I was in the right place.

"You bought it? From whom?"

"Ms. Kayla Rowan."

...

I asked Kayla for a meeting, but she arrived late. Judging from her guilty expression, she probably already knew why I asked her to meet.

"You sold the house?" I asked her bluntly.

She nodded. "Yeah."

I paid for the house, but her name was also added to the deed. I also wanted to decorate our home the way she wanted, so I gave her the money for the renovations. I had lost count of how much money she asked me for over the years.

"Fine, pay me the money for the renovations."

Kayla lowered her head, muttering, "I don't have any... any money to pay you. Can... Can I pay you back later?"

I frowned. "You sold the house, and you still don't have any money?"

Kayla gulped, glanced at me cautiously, and replied, "I gave... I gave the money to Andrew for his surgery."

Andrew's parents were adamant and ended up taking Kayla's parents to court. Eventually, Kayla had to pay a significant amount as compensation to resolve the issue."They're also getting married soon."I was once again astonished. "They're still getting married after everything that happened?"My mother nodded. "What can we do? Andrew has become like this now, and the Quinn family is forcing Kayla to marry. If Kayla doesn't marry, they will sue her parents."I shook my head. What a cursed romance.I got married to Regina a year later. The night before our wedding, Kayla showed up downstairs out of the blue. She looked so frail, I almost did not recognize her. She seemed like a mere shadow of herself, as if a strong breeze could whisk her away. She had lost the charm and beauty she once possessed.I stared at her for a long time before recognizing her.She saw me and touched her face. "Do you not recognize me anymore?"I shook my head. "No."She slowly faked a smile, bitterly s

I originally intended to take a photo of her back, but she suddenly turned around and smiled. If it were not for her classmate walking up from behind me, I almost thought she was smiling at me.I continued flipping through the photo album. Every single photo could bring back my memories. On the day of our graduation from senior year, my friends cried so hard that their eyes were swollen. I eventually secretly took a photo of them. Looking back now still made me feel touched.'Wait a minute,' I thought as I took out the photo and looked at it carefully. Not far behind me stood a girl. It was Regina. Hadn’t she already graduated two years earlier by then? She was looking at me, smiling with eyes full of tenderness. She smiled so brightly.'Could it be... that she... came back specifically to see me?' I pondered and shook my head as it did not seem possible. We hardly communicated in high school. The only time we did was when my keychain fell, and she picked it up. She tried to retu

After she finished speaking, she looked at Andrew. "If you refuse to speak, we'll call the police. You're spreading false rumors about me. I can sue you for this." Andrew's face turned pale with fear, and his arms were so weak that he could not even hold the child steadily anymore. "I... I..." He looked up at Kayla. "This child isn't... isn't Ms. Summer's." Kayla's eyes widened instantly, looking incredulous. "Not hers?" She thought for a moment and comforted Andrew, "Don't be afraid. I know she's wealthy, but the child is hers, and she can't escape it." Andrew shook his head. "It really isn't Ms. Summer." Kayla was completely stunned. In fact, I was also stunned along with Kayla. He confidently invited me out and used the child to make me stay away from Regina, but it was all self-staged.Regina was not surprised by this answer. She turned to me and explained, "I'm not even his direct superior. His day-to-day work involves dealing with my assistant. We haven't even spok

Back when I was together with Kayla, her parents also nitpicked me a lot even though I was much better off in terms of family background, appearance, and ability than her.Andrew only dated Kayla for half a year before her parents forced them to end things. In the past few years, Andrew's family had been even more strapped for cash due to his older brother's marriage, and he not only lost his job but was also ill. Kayla's parents would never agree to these things in the first place, especially now that Andrew had a child. When Andrew heard me ask like this, his face turned pale instantly. "They... They have already accepted it."I smiled. "That's good."However, judging from his expression, I knew that Kayla's parents still had no idea that he had gotten together with Kayla. After we broke off our engagement, her parents also came to see me several times. When they saw my refusal, they became infuriated and verbally abused me. We blocked each other's contact after that. I heard tha

"I thought you would be staying for a long time."She smiled and stood beside me. "We came together, so of course we should leave together."I was just about to speak when I saw Andrew running out. He seemed to come for Regina. As expected, he ran to Regina's side and took out a piece of paper to hand to her. "Ms. Summer, you have a weak stomach. Didn't you like the soup I made last time? I wrote down the recipe on this paper."I could not help being impressed. He was so meticulous. No wonder Kayla longed for him all these years.Regina looked down at the paper Andrew handed to her, slightly frowning. "I don't remember having drunk any of your soup."Andrew paused for a moment before his ears turned red. He quickly glanced at me, his expression turning paler."Besides..." Regina continued. "My stomach is fine."Andrew stood there at a loss.I was not interested in their affairs and was not in the mood to watch. Since we had reached my car, I bid Regina goodbye and was about to

This Regina must be an expert in romance to be able to neglect her own child."No."I felt a wave of disgust. It seemed to be so."Really?" I felt disdain and contempt.Regina seemed to have sensed my unfriendly attitude toward her and was somewhat curious. "What's the matter? You seem to have some misunderstandings about me."I just smiled and remained silent. My first meeting with Regina after so many years ended without any outcome, but I never expected our fate with each other to continue. One month later, she attended a friend's birthday party too."You came too?"Regina and I stood together waiting for the elevator. She was the first to ask me.I nodded and said yes."Nate?"I heard a familiar voice and turned around to see Kayla standing there with Andrew beside her.Andrew's complexion looked much better. He was not as frail as before.Out of the corner of my eye, I looked at Regina standing next to me. What a chaotic scene this was.Kayla looked at me nervously.
