CLEO

I steeled my heart as I entered the car. I would fight through hell and the heavens before I gave my son up to the wolves.

I stared out the windows as we drove back to the packhouse. “Where did Alpha Laurent go?” I questioned Laurent’s new driver.

“He didn’t say, Luna.” The driver answered, meeting my eyes in the mirror.

The drive passed in silence after that. I dialed Laurent’s number but I only got his voicemail.

The dread of the afternoon seemed to chill the air. When I arrived at t

CLEO The next morning, we were out to the hospital early. Laurent and I would have to travel down to the King’s territory and we wanted to see our son before that.We found Kyle sitting up in bed, sunlight from the window catching the same silver in his eyes that my mate had. “Mama! Mr. Laurent!” Kyle greeted as he always did when we came in together. A smile burst on my face as I kissed his cheeks. “Yes, baby.” It was bittersweet really. This would be the last time Kyle would refer to his father as Mr. Laurent. Bitter because I wished I’d done this earlier, and sweet because we were finally crossing that bridge. “How are you doing?” Laurent perched on the bed beside our son. Kyle turned to him with an arched brow. “Better than you. Did something happen?” I muffled the laugh that rose in my throat. Children were so intuitive. I wondered what tell he had picked up to know something wasnt quite right. “No, baby. There’s nothing wrong at all. There’s just something Mr. Laurent an

CLEO When Laurent returned home, I was already waiting at the front door for him. Roman had informed me he was on his way back and I was too eager to stay inside our room. I smiled, thrust my hips out and leaned against the door, waiting to surprise him. The door opened, I got one look at his face and jolted; his eyes were grim and hollow, so dark they stole the breath right out of my lungs.“Laurent?” I ran towards him, my heart already lodged in my throat. “Did something happen? You look like you saw the devil himself.” “And maybe I did.” My mate muttered. He stopped beside me and I opened my arms. He stepped between them, bending his head into the hollow of my shoulders. His fingers clenched and flexed against my back, his breathing nearly ragged. I had never seen Laurent so… broken. “Baby?” I asked. He pulled away, his eyes shiny. Was he… on the verge of tears? I hadn’t even seen him break down this bad after his father’s death. Taking his hand, I led him last the kitchen,

LAURENT It was the King’s voice that pulled me from the ringing in my ears. “How did you dispose of her body?” He questioned the two traitors on their knees before us. “I made it look like a border skirmish, and she was wrongly attacked by a rogue. No one saw what happened in the fight so no one questioned it. Everyone assumed her entire family died during the fight.” I glared daggers at my uncle, forcing my fists closed and fighting the dangerous urge to sink my claws in his throat. Intensely enraged, my voice barely recognizable to me, I asked. “Where is she buried?” Erin’s shoulder sagged. He made no effort to hide the truth. I was almost grateful that my mate was being spared this ordeal. These two callous beings did not deserve to be in theie presence, especially not when they could cause her pain at will.“We buried her body in an unmarked grave deep in the woods around Thornwood. I’ve visited it only once during the years. I’m not sure I can find it again.” I spat right

LAURENT The drive to the King’s territory took three hours, and I spent most of it staring out the window, my mind going back again and again to my mate that I’d left sleeping in our bed.Cleo’s offer from last night brought a smile to my face despite the darkness still hanging over us. I planned out the evening, promising we would sit down with Kyle once I was home and tell him the truth. My son would know he had a father who loved him, who had wanted him from the moment he learned he existed, regardless of what the council or alpha politics decided about us.I thought of my father too. I had been forced to delay his funeral while the investigation into his death happened. Once Erin confessed today, or the Orch dragged the truth out of him whether he wanted it or not, I could finally bury Richard properly, and give him the rites he deserved. My mother’s memory deserved to finally rest beside his. And then there was Cleo’s mother. If Erin knew where she was, and we found her aliv

CLEOWhen I woke up alone the next morning with no note from Laurent, I knew something was really wrong. His side of the sheets did not look slept in. I couldn’t even pick up his scent from it which meant he had been gone for hours. Maybe he had never slept beside me to begin with. Showering as quickly as I could, I went downstairs to the kitchen. If he hadn’t spent the night in bed, then I knew he would be really exhausted. Tabitha was already handling breakfast. She smiled when I stepped into the kitchen. “Good morning, Luna.” “Good morning, Tabitha. I’ll take over breakfast.” I came over to the counter where she had already started chopping the vegetables. “Have you seen my mate all morning?” She glanced outside the window. I looked and saw at the moment my mate coming from the direction of the woods. His shirt was missing, the morning sun simmering off his golden skin. His eyes were fixed intently on Roman’s as they stalked out of the woods together. A small smirk curled my

LAURENTI didn’t bother waking anyone, and I didn’t waste time descending through the house. I vaulted over the balcony railing and shifted midair. I landed on the floor on four paws. The air was colder and my hearing was louder and better. The shadows were even brighter and Axel could see far better. Every scent was bold and distinct in my nose. I caught the guards’ familiar musk first. But their scent was far away, carried under the wind towards me. Something was wrong because my nose was also picking up another scent that was unfamiliar. It didn’t make any sense. This late at night, no one should be in the woods, much less a scent that was strange. I tilted my head and listened to ensure I was alone, then closed my eyes and inhaled. My eyes shot open; the unfamiliar smell was an acrid scent of a rogue who shouldn’t have been in Blackfur. I moved on all fours through the woods, careful to place each paw silently, my ears swiveling toward the murmur of voices coming through the
