Chapter 1

Chantelle's POV

I slowly made my way back home, walked into the bedroom, and collapsed onto the bed. It wasn't until I woke up that the pain in my abdomen finally eased a little.

It still felt strange, the emptiness—both in my abdomen and in this dark, hollow house.

Out of habit, I wanted to send a message to my husband, Rykel Heffer. I wanted to ask him why he still wasn't home at 3:00 am.

But when I unlocked my phone and saw the screen full of messages reading "okay", my mind finally caught up.

I laughed mockingly at myself. After almost two years, how could I still not remember that his replies were automated?

Then, all of a sudden, there came the click of the door lock from the entryway.

I walked out and saw Rykel, who was pulling off his soaked shirt.

"Joey said she wanted my goulash, so I brought some over, but I got caught in the rain on the way back. Anyway, you're still up at this hour?"

I hummed flatly in response.

He headed for the bathroom and asked casually, "Why were you at the hospital today?"

Then, he pulled out the hairdryer, plugged it in, and flipped the switch.

"To get an abortion," I said, but my voice was drowned out by the roar of the hair dryer.

This was common behavior from him. He never gave me any time to speak at all.

My eyes drifted to the red cord necklace around his neck. Whenever he wore a white shirt, it always showed through. He would rather put on an extra suit jacket in the height of summer than take it off, even though it was just a free gift Joey Mugbrey, my mentee, got during a shopping spree.

"Rykel, where's your wedding ring?" I asked, leaning against the doorframe.

He turned off the hair dryer and casually ran a hand through his hair. "I took it off. I don't like the feeling of being constrained."

"Then why do you wear that cord necklace?" I asked, even though I already knew the answer.

"That's different," he said. "The necklace is soft, but the wedding ring is stiff and gets in the way. You're the only one who likes wearing it."

I looked down at the ring on my finger. The wedding ring? I had taken it off long ago. This one was something I bought at a flea market for ten dollars. In fact, the diamond on it was so obviously fake that it was laughable.

Rykel simply hadn't noticed. Or rather, he had stopped paying attention to me for too long and hadn't held my hand in ages.

"Alright. Get some sleep," Rykel said before ruffling my hair and heading into the guest room.

Ever since I got pregnant, we hadn't shared a bed again. He told me that he stayed up late and didn't want to disturb my rest.

Yet every day, he would go and pick Joey up after her night shift, accompany her to get a late-night snack outside, and then drop her off at her place. By the time he got home, it would already be 3:00 am.

Even then, they still stayed in contact after returning home.

Once, I got up to use the bathroom at around 5:00 am and saw that the light in the guest room was still on. The sound of typing and soft laughter came from inside.

In the past, I really would have gone in and asked what they were talking about.

Was there really that much to say? And if so, why did Rykel clam up whenever he was around me?

But now, none of that mattered anymore.

My phone screen lit up with a confirmation notice for the overseas assignment. I pressed "Confirm" and went back to bed.

Third-Person POVAfter returning to Bersky, Rykel didn't step outside for an entire month. Day after day, he stayed in the home he and Chantelle had once shared, shutting himself away behind tightly drawn curtains.Surrounded by piles of empty bottles, he drank the moment he woke and slipped into unconsciousness as soon as the alcohol took hold. Unable to accept how things had ended, he turned to drinking to dull the pain.At least in his dreams, he could still see Chantelle. He could still convince himself that she loved him.But eventually, Rykel came to the horrifying realization that she must have hated him too deeply—so deeply that she would neither appear in his dreams nor leave him with the slightest illusion to cling to.He completely broke down. He shut himself away in the past. Every day, he did nothing but drink and hold their photo album in his hands, turning through the photographs one by one.He kept forcing himself to relive those memories, as though each one were

Chantelle's POVRykel did everything he could to win me back. Seeing someone who had always been so proud willing to humble himself to this extent was something I had never expected. He even began staying in the hallway outside my apartment, all for the slightest chance of crossing paths with me whenever I came home.Even when he had to stop at a hotel just to shower, he would rush through it and hurry back. He was afraid that he might miss me during those brief minutes apart. He had fallen more than once on the way, leaving the wounds on his knees barely any time to heal."There's no need for this."Once again, I refused the breakfast he held out to me.Rykel was so exhausted that he barely had the strength to speak. He had clearly lost a significant amount of weight, and his clothes hung loosely from his frame. His exposed wrists were alarmingly thin, the veins stark beneath his skin."Chantelle, please, just take it… Think of it as not letting the food go to waste. Have a li

  • Messages for a Man Who Never Reads Them   Chapter 10

Chantelle's POVI hadn't seen Rykel for days. Being alone in a hospital in a foreign country with no one there to care for him couldn't have been easy. A part of me hoped he would finally get the message and give up.But soon enough, Rykel was back to showing up wherever I went. He started downstairs at my office, then turned up on the streets, and before long, he had even tracked me down to my front door. He arrived with a fresh fish in his arms, insisting that he wanted to cook me a meal.I had just returned from a business dinner, and the alcohol was still coursing through my veins. I was in no state to stop him when he slipped into my house. My head was spinning, and I couldn't be bothered to argue with him. Instead, I shamelessly started bossing him around."Make me some fish stew. I need something to help me sober up.""Fill a basin with warm water and wash my feet."Rykel seemed quite pleased. Cradling my feet in his hands, he carefully wiped away every trace of water wit

  • Messages for a Man Who Never Reads Them   Chapter 9

Chantelle's POVOne regular morning, I was headed to work as usual. Just as I reached the office building, I caught sight of Rykel. He was crouched by the roadside under an oak tree, wearing a simple black coat. His hair was disheveled, he had stubble on his chin, and his eyes were closed with dark circles underneath. As I walked past him, I stepped on a dry leaf. The crisp crunch jolted him awake. Though sleep still clouded his eyes, the moment he saw me, he scrambled to his feet, only to stumble several times as tree branches snagged his clothes and tore them. Finally catching himself, he hurried after me, his voice hoarse. "Chantelle… wait, please wait…"I had no intention of wasting time with him. Just as I was about to walk off, Rykel suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace. A familiar woody scent filled my nose. While it was once a smell that had brought me comfort, now it only made me want to gag.I struggled to break free, but Rykel held on with all his strength, his arms

Chantelle's POVAfter a month of rest, I started my job at the new office. The salary was considerably higher than what I'd earned at the headquarters. As a seasoned architect, I was mainly in charge of training new employees. My daily routine consisted of mentoring newcomers and working on my own design projects whenever I had free time. Life was relaxed and comfortable.I gradually grew used to eating alone, shopping at the supermarket alone, staying home alone, and enjoying the rare peaceful moments. I struck a good balance between work and life.…After two years, the memories of the past grew hazier, and Rykel's figure slowly faded from my mind.I was also eventually promoted to general manager. On the day of my promotion, the company held a small celebration for me. Standing on the stage, listening to the thunderous applause below, I couldn't help but lift my chin a little higher, feeling a quiet pride.I had a stable career, a spacious home, and kind colleagues around me.

Chantelle's POVBy the time the plane landed, it was already late at night.I dragged my suitcase out of the arrival hall, which was filled with people holding up signs. Couples embraced while families smiled and waved at their loved ones. I walked through them, feeling a little forlorn. The company liaison sent me a message saying the accommodation had already been arranged and the keys were at the security desk.I replied with "noted" and stood by the roadside to hail a cab. After I got into the cab, I watched the cityscape rushing past outside the window. Neon lights blurred into ribbons of color, and everything around me felt unfamiliar.…Back at the apartment, after washing up, I lay down on the bed ready to sleep. But no matter how I tossed and turned, sleep wouldn't come. I simply couldn't sleep no matter what. Every time I closed my eyes, past scenes would flash in my mind, completely beyond my control. To say I had completely let go wouldn't be realistic. After all,
