Chapter 8

Author: Timber Bloom
Whenever Stella paused to study a detail on the big screen, Claire would conveniently fall silent too, pretending to examine the same area through her magnifying glass.

After Claire correctly identified several difficult pieces in a row, the praise came exactly as expected.

Applause filled the room.

Everyone looked at her with admiration.

“No wonder she trained under Samuel Prescott. I heard she started studying antiques when she was seven and almost never gets an attribution wrong. People in the capital were calling her a prodigy before she was even out of her teens. Looks like the reputation was well deserved.”

“The next generation really is taking over. Makes the rest of us feel old.”

“Claire Moore is famous for being able to spot the truth at a glance. You can’t teach talent like that.”

The smile slowly disappeared from Eric’s face.

He sat sprawled in his chair, absently turning the plain ring on his finger.

Anyone who knew him well would’ve recognized the warning sign.

Eric Harlow was pissed.

His gaze moved from Claire to Stella.

Claire sat under the lights, soaking up the applause, the recognition, and the prestige.

Stella sat unnoticed in the shadows.

And somehow, she looked completely numb to it.

As if this had happened so many times that she no longer expected anything different.

For one ugly moment, Eric could almost picture Claire clinging to Stella’s back like a parasite, feeding off everything that belonged to her.

And Lucas stood beside them, keeping Stella trapped and silent while Claire took the credit.

Making sure she couldn’t defend herself.

Couldn’t even tell anyone the truth.

Eric didn’t interrupt the event.

He simply got up and walked out.

With his long stride, he disappeared from the room within moments.

Stella noticed.

She didn’t care.

The only thing she registered was the dangerous edge in his posture. People moved aside almost instinctively as he passed.

Apparently someone had managed to piss off the notoriously volatile Mr. Harlow.

Eric went straight to the garden terrace outside the exhibition hall.

He lit a cigarette, pulled out his phone, and called Tyler.

“Ty, I need you to look into something.”

Tyler answered immediately.

“Anything, as long as you stop calling me Ty. What do you need?”

Eric leaned against the railing and exhaled a stream of smoke into the night.

“What happened between Stella and Lucas over the past few years?”

That instantly got Tyler interested.

“Oh, now you’re asking the right person. You missed all the drama because your brother shipped you off to the military right after college. Those two have been a complete disaster. So basically...”

“Skip the commentary. Give me the important part.”

“Fine. About two years into their marriage, right after Stella had the baby, Claire came back and started seeing Lucas again.

“You remember Claire’s ex-husband? The shady antiques dealer I told you about? He got caught in some illegal trafficking scheme and ended up with more than ten years in prison.

“Anyway, not the point.

“Once Claire came back, Stella found out she’d basically been a substitute for her. Things got ugly. Stella was determined to divorce Lucas for a while.

“Then something changed. No idea what. She just... stopped fighting him.”

Eric thought about the way Stella had sat in that dark corner tonight.

Quietly letting someone else take credit for everything she knew.

What could possibly have made someone like her stop fighting?

Then he thought of her daughter.

“Got it. Find out everything you can about Stella’s daughter.

“And I want everything on Claire from the past two years.”

Tyler went quiet for a beat.

“Why are you digging into both of them?”

Eric dropped the bomb without hesitation.

“I’m into Stella.”

There was a long silence.

Then Tyler nearly shouted into the phone.

“You’re what?”

Eric frowned.

“Keep your voice down.”

“Okay. Wow.”

Tyler sounded genuinely stunned now.

“So... does Lucas know?

“Actually, he definitely can’t know, right? You know how possessive he is about Stella. If he finds out you’re going after his wife...

“Eric, are you two even going to be friends after this?”

Eric gave a low laugh and bit down on the cigarette between his teeth.

“Who cares?”

And tonight was only the beginning.Over the past two years, Claire had stolen far too much from her.Her achievements. Her reputation.Everything that should’ve belonged to Stella. Now Stella was going to take it all back, one piece at a time.At the same moment, Walter paused and followed Claire’s gaze. His eyes met Stella’s across the room.Stella gave him a calm, respectful nod. There was something about her quiet composure that felt strangely familiar.---Smack!The moment Stella stepped into the lounge, Claire slapped her across the face.“Stella, you set me up!”The force of the blow turned Stella’s head to the side. From the corner of her eye, she saw Lucas sitting on the couch. His brows were drawn together, but his expression remained cold and detached as he watched them.Stella slowly lifted her head. She tucked the loose strands of hair at her temple behind her ear. Then she slapped Claire right back.Claire stumbled into a decorative screen and knocked it over. She clutch

Tyler’s family, the Grants, had once had deep ties to organized crime. After going legitimate, they turned their old network into a private intelligence and investigations firm, which Tyler now ran.Once Eric had given him the details, he finished his cigarette but made no move to go back inside.Instead, he lit another.A moment later, his expression went blank. He pulled the cigarette from his mouth, crushed it between his fingers, and tossed the remains into a trash can.---Back inside the exhibition hall, the appraisal portion of the evening was drawing to a close.“And now, for our final piece of the night, a special item brought to us by Mr. Walter Collins.”At the host’s announcement, a staff member carefully carried out a velvet-lined tray and placed the final piece beneath the high-resolution cameras. The presentation case opened.Under the bright lights sat an elegant pale-blue porcelain vase with a long, slender neck. Its proportions were graceful, the glaze soft and lumino

Just then, a staff member announced that it was time for the guests to take their seats, giving Claire a convenient escape from the situation. The conversation ended there. But Stella’s mention of a “priceless” gift had already sparked everyone’s curiosity.Word spread quickly. Even after everyone was seated, people kept asking Claire about the Renaissance signet ring, only for her to change the subject every time.Walter noticed all of it.Lucas grabbed Stella and pulled her out into the hallway. He caught her by the chin, his voice cold.“Stella, don’t think I don’t know what you’re trying to do. This is Ravenwood, not Harbour City.“And here’s something you apparently don’t know. Samuel Prescott is bedridden now. He can barely speak. No one can prove who his real student is anymore, so I suggest you stop wasting your time with these little games.”Stella’s pupils contracted. She hadn’t seen her mentor in years. She never imagined that the next news she heard about him wou

Stella made sure her voice carried just far enough for the people around her to hear. The owner’s expression soured immediately. He was about to snap at her when an elderly voice cut in.“Oh? And what makes you think it’s a fake?”The speaker was a white-haired man in a dark patterned blazer, linen trousers, and polished loafers. At first glance, he looked more like someone’s grandfather out for an evening stroll than one of the most respected figures in the antiques world. But the moment he spoke, everyone around him straightened. The owner quickly lowered his voice.“Mr. Collins, don’t listen to her. She’s barely old enough to have seen any serious pieces. I had this professionally authenticated. It’s absolutely genuine.”Someone nearby laughed.“Exactly. Not everyone can be Claire Moore, spotting a fake from across the room.”Stella ignored the condescension and gave Walter a polite smile.“This gentleman said the painting dates to the mid-nineteenth century. But the paper

Stella felt her scalp prickle.Cynthia stepped forward, grabbed her stiff arm, and practically dragged her over to Lucas.“Exactly, Stella. You disappeared all night. We were worried sick about you.”Michael’s face darkened.“This is ridiculous. Can’t you control that temper of yours for once? You’re getting more unreasonable by the day. You had everyone worried half to death. Don’t you feel even a little guilty?”Cynthia tugged at his arm, silently telling him to stop. But Michael only got angrier.“This is what happens when you’re raised by someone else. That adoptive family spoiled you rotten and gave you this impossible attitude...”Stella kicked her open suitcase aside. It slammed into the floor with a loud bang.“Don’t talk about them.”Michael’s complaints stopped cold.Lucas finally stepped in, his tone calm and gracious.“Mom, Dad, it’s fine. Stella has a temper, but I don’t mind indulging her. She probably just went out with some friends last night. I overreacted
