Chapter 4

Author: Growing Grass
The doors to the operating room opened again. An exhausted doctor walked out before slowly shaking his head.

"I'm sorry. We did everything we could."

Grandma let out a heart-wrenching wail. She rushed in and threw herself over Holly's body, crying her heart out. "My Holly! My granddaughter!"

Granny staggered into the room as well. She hugged Holly's cold body as she sobbed. "Holly! How could this happen to her?"

Dad stood frozen in place, swaying slightly. Overwhelming grief and remorse were etched on his face. He stared at his lifeless daughter on the operating table, then let out an uncontrollable roar of rage.

Even though Mom said she'd be back that evening, she didn't return until two days later.

By the time she finally showed up with Trevor in tow, Holly's funeral was already over.

A shiny platinum bracelet dangled from Trevor's wrist. The dim lighting in the living room only made it look even more glaring.

The moment Mom saw me, she walked over and slapped me hard before I even had time to react.

A searing pain spread across my face instantly. My head, knocked to the side by the impact, started to buzz.

"You troublemaker! I was only spending some time with Trevor, and you just had to make up lies and cause a commotion! How dare you treat Holly's well-being like some kind of joke!"

My cheek went numb from the hit as my mind went blank. It took a while before I could find my voice again. "I didn't…"

As Trevor caressed the bracelet on his wrist, he looked at me with an innocent expression and a barely noticeable look of triumph in his eyes.

"Mom, don't be mad. You shouldn't get upset over me. He's your biological son after all. He probably just missed you too much, so he…"

It might seem like he was trying to smooth things over, but his every word was just adding fuel to the fire.

"I'd rather have never had a son like you!" Mom hissed through gritted teeth, looking at me like I was the plague she needed to avoid at all costs.

Dad, who had been silent this entire time, positioned himself in front of me. "If you don't want him, I do. Take Trevor and get out. Go live your own lives."

Both Mom and I froze. Dad usually doted on Trevor just as much as Mom did, if not more. So for him to act like this was completely out of character.

"Marvin, what's wrong with you?" Mom asked.

Seeing this, Trevor immediately stepped forward. He timidly tugged at Dad's sleeve as he asked in a pitiful voice, "Are you mad at me, Dad? I don't want the bracelet anymore, so please don't be mad."

His eyes darted between Dad and me, his act painfully obvious. He was trying to soften Dad's attitude by playing the role of the pitiful, sensible son.

Dad shook Trevor's hand off, his face devoid of emotion. "Don't call me Dad. We aren't even related by blood."

Trevor instantly went pale. He froze in place as his tears dried up.

At that point, Grandma couldn't help but remark, "You neglect your own child but go all out for someone else's! Some mother you are!"

I clutched my burning cheek behind Dad, watching Mom get ripped apart by the whole family. This time, I was no longer the one being condemned.

Unable to understand what was happening, Mom just took her anger out on me. "Norman, what exactly did you tell them? What lies did you make up this time?"

She still refused to believe that Holly was dead, just as she refused to believe her own actions had led to such a devastating outcome.

All she wanted to believe was that I had pulled another stunt, badmouthed her, and turned everyone against her. Just as Mom was about to snap, Granny slapped her hard across the face.

Before Mom could even recover from the slap, Granny flung the paper she'd been clutching straight at Mom's face.

"You've got some nerve to point fingers! Take a good look at what you did!"

But she went along with it just because she wanted to rekindle her relationship with Gilbert.Down at the detention center, Trevor gripped the iron bars, bawling his eyes out. "Mom, save me! Mom was shaking with rage. She raised a trembling finger at me, her chest heaving violently. "You! You ungrateful brat! I'm your mother! How dare you talk to me like that!"Fine then! Norman Keller, I'll make this clear right now, with your grandmother as my witness. You're no longer a son of mine! You can leave! Don't ever come back to our home again! And I'll pretend I never had you!"I looked at her coldly. Instead of a hurt expression, I flashed her a smile of utter relief. This was exactly what I wanted. I couldn't have asked for anything better. "Great. I'd love nothing more than to cut ties!"My immediate agreement clearly caught Mom off guard. She was suddenly at a loss for words, her face turning bright red.Trevor immediately took the chance to throw himself into Mom's arms, sniffling. "Mom, please don't do this… Norman's just saying things in the heat of the moment… And you still have me…"Mom hugged Trevor tightly. "That's right! I still have you! Trevor, sweetie, tha

The man lunged to grab me. I struggled with everything I had, but I was absolutely no match for him.He started dragging me toward a van, cursing at me the entire time. "I was actually going to deal with you much later. You only have yourself to blame for being so unlucky!""Let me go! Get away from me!"I kicked and thrashed with every ounce of strength I had as I dug my nails into the back of his hand."You want to do this the hard way, huh? I'm going to teach you a lesson you'll never forget!"He jerked me forward with even more force.Just as I was about to be dragged into the van, a familiar figure suddenly appeared out of nowhere."Stop right there! What do you think you're doing?"It was Dad!He charged at the masked man without a second thought, and the two of them started brawling."Dad!" I cried out in shock.Ignoring the pain I was feeling, I scrambled to my feet to help him.Even though Dad had a big stick with him, the other guy was clearly much more agile than

Mom snatched the photo and threw it at me with all her strength. "If Trevor hadn't suggested checking the surveillance footage to find out how Holly died, I never would've learned just how sick and twisted you are!"As I looked straight into her cold eyes, I was suddenly filled with uncontrollable anger. "Am I really your biological son?"Mom's expression shifted, and a look of panic crossed her face. "W-What are you talking about?"I let out a laugh. "If I really were your son, how could you bear to treat me like this? My whole life, you've only cared about Trevor. And now you're trying to pin Holly's death on me, too?"What, am I the one who shot her?"Mom glared at me and pressed her lips into a tight line. After a few seconds, she finally spoke. "Yeah, I did give birth to you. But why did I have to give birth to someone like you?"While pointing at me, she screamed at the top of her lungs, "You've been jealous of your younger brother ever since you were a child! And you even

Mom said, "No, Marvin, listen to me. Let me explain! It's not what you think. It's because Trevor's parents…"Panic was written all over her face. Her lips trembled as she desperately tried to defend herself. With a cold scoff, Dad pulled out a photo from his pocket and threw it at Mom's face.In the photo, a younger version of her was in a tight embrace with Trevor's father, both of them wearing bright smiles.Mom looked like she'd been struck by lightning right then. Her whole body went still. She had gone to great lengths to hide this photo in the safest, most hidden spot. How could anyone have found it?I sneered inwardly. Naturally, I was the one who had anonymously mailed it to Dad, along with the old love letters that Mom and Trevor's father had secretly exchanged years ago, which I'd found. In my past life, I had known for a long time that Mom never got over her first love after getting married. She would even meet him in secret from time to time, sometimes taking me with

Pointing at the death certificate, Granny screamed in despair, "Your daughter is dead because of you, Mary Holden! Because of your selfishness! Because of your stupidity!"Mom's hands trembled as she picked up the flimsy piece of paper. She stared at it so hard that it was as if she wanted to burn a hole through it.Trevor was clearly terrified by the sudden, tense atmosphere. He quietly backed away, trying to make himself as small and invisible as possible.Dad looked at her coldly. "I want a divorce, Mary."Mom snapped her head up. "No! I'm not agreeing to a divorce! It's my fault that Holly is gone, but I really didn't know it was this serious! I thought Norman was lying again!"Clutching the death certificate, Mom wailed hysterically as she begged, "Marvin, please forgive me this once. Just this once, okay? I swear I'll never make the same mistake again!""Forgive you? Mary, how am I supposed to forgive you?"Dad's voice shot up, filled with all the anger and disappointment
