The moment it went out, Blake called.

I hung up.

He switched to voice messages and sent three in a row, each one more impatient than the last.

[It's just a joke between friends. Do you have to make it a thing?]

[You just mate with Eric first and cancel it in a month. It's a forfeit, that's all.]

[Don't embarrass me over this.]

Reading them, my chest still tightened.

He handed me over like an object and then turned around and complained that I was being difficult.

The three tasks of the mating ceremony went up in the group soon after.

The first, a kiss.

The second, complete the mating mark ceremony and form a bond.

The third, announcing it on every social platform.

The mockery came quickly.

"She cannot even call her wolf. How is she supposed to complete these tasks and form a bond?"

"Every werewolf knows a broken wolf can't form a bond. Looks like Eric isn't finishing that one."

"Going public with something that useless isn't an announcement. It's public suicide."

Every line mocked me as a broken wolf whose wolf had never awakened.

And every line expressed pity for Eric.

And for all the noise, Eric never appeared.

I had heard Blake mention him.

He always talked about Eric like a close friend, but his wariness was obvious.

Blake added in the group, "Liora is weak and timid. Do not frighten her. Just go through the motions."

It sounded considerate. Among werewolves, though, labels like weak and timid were enough to brand me as a disgrace.

Last year, when I came of age, I stood in the middle of the moonstone circle with dozens of pairs of eyes on me.

All of them waiting for the Alpha's daughter to wake a powerful wolf.

I gave it everything I had, but nothing answered in my mind. Instead, tearing pain ripped through my body.

My vision went and I went down.

The last thing I saw before I lost consciousness was the jeering crowd, with Blake standing behind them in expressionless profile.

I found out later that someone had filmed it.

That is the video going around the group now.

Just then, my closest friend, Freya, video-called me.

"What kind of useless boyfriend loses his girlfriend to his friend in a game?

"Why doesn't he bet himself away and become the first werewolf in this pack mated to another man?

"Just wait, Liora. I'm going out right now for the strongest werewolf laxative they make, and I'm putting it in his water so he can find out what public humiliation feels like!"

Blake's friends never met a spectacle they did not want to make bigger, so it did not surprise me that word had reached Freya.

But the weight on my chest lifted at my friend's outrage on my behalf.

Watching her still working out ways to get back at them for me, I laughed out loud.

"Don't worry, Freya. You don't have to. I'll settle this myself."

Freya's eyes lit up.

"Does that mean you finally don't have to hide what you are?"

[Of course.]

My wolf answered before I could.

I smiled and went on, "I'm in the bet too. I get a show and I get paid. Why wouldn't I go?"

Freya laughed, as though she could already see their faces.

"Go! You absolutely have to go!

"Let every one of them find out who the strongest wolf actually is!

"We aren't just going to beat them, we're going to make them admit it!"

The call had barely ended when there was a knock at my door.

It was my mother.

There was worry on her face.

"Liora, I heard something about a mating ceremony. Is it with that boyfriend of yours?"

I went quiet.

My mother knew how much I had liked Blake.

We went to the same high school. He was captain of the football team and a future Gamma warrior.

A great many girls liked him, and I was one of them.

Although I carried my Alpha father's blood, I had always been far weaker than an ordinary werewolf. Among wolves who worshiped strength, that made me an outcast.

I thought that quiet crush would end when we graduated, and then Blake came to me and told me he wanted me.

We agreed we would go to the same university and become strong, accomplished wolves together.

And after the shifting trial, none of it was the same.

After I collapsed, many of my friends vanished from my life.

Including Blake.

My mother disapproved of Blake, but for the sake of my health she kept it to herself.

I woke up in a hospital room, in pain.

The doctors said it was a rare case of a wolf purging and rebuilding its vessel.

What it would become in the end, nobody could predict.

I bit my lip bloody against the pain and survived one shaking night after another by holding on to the promise Blake and I had made.

After that I could hear howling from a long way off and pick out the scent of every wolf line.

I did not dare tell anyone.

My wolf had not finished evolving.

If the Council of Elders found out, there was no telling whether they would treat me as an heir or as something aberrant that needed controlling.

My mother had seen me through those nights and she knew what I felt for Blake.

She sighed and touched my hair.

"Whatever you decide, I am behind you."

When the door closed, my nose stung.

I had loved the wrong person.

But I still had family and a friend who had stayed quietly beside me through it all.

Then the group chat chimed again.

Eric had appeared.

He ignored everyone who was egging it on and replied only to me.

"If you don't want to come tomorrow, you don't have to.

"A mating ceremony requires both sides to be willing. I lost the game, and no one gets to decide for you."

Blake was there immediately.

"Eric, it's only a game. Liora isn't that bad a sport."

Eric did not answer him.

I stared at the black-wolf avatar, struck by a sudden sense of familiarity.

My wolf roared, as though confirming the thought.

Then a friend request came up.

The same black wolf's head.

At the hospital.Eric lay on the bed, pale and barely breathing.A pack physician finished examining him, stepped back with a grave expression, and said, "The forbidden blades damaged the very source of his wolf. Ordinary medicine cannot heal it."There is only one remedy. A white-wolf Alpha must enter his mind with pure moon-soul power and repair the damage."But the risk is extreme. One mistake could permanently damage both your souls."I did not hesitate. I took Eric's cold hand."Begin."I closed my eyes and summoned the white-wolf power within me.Dizziness swept through my consciousness, and I entered the darkness of Eric's mindscape.A freezing wind howled through it, over ground littered with shattered black stone. In the shelter of an icy ridge, a massive black wolf lay curled and covered in wounds, its breath faint. When it saw me, it weakly lifted its head and gave a soft whine. The instant our souls touched, years of memories Eric had buried surged into my mind.Three years

White-wolf power formed a vast screen of light above the plaza. The white-wolf bloodline carried the power to recover buried memories, and it began to replay the past in full.Images from three years of security-camera blind spots filled the screen.Everyone watched Serena slip into the center of the testing circle the night before my trial, open a packet of forbidden powder, and scatter it across the stones. The image shifted. Blake stood motionless in the shadows nearby, watched everything, and then walked away without expression.Next came the day of the trial, when Serena pretended kindness and placed the sachet containing the forbidden drug in my hand.Chat records from countless nights appeared before the crowd as well.Again and again, Serena manipulated Blake, urged him to discard me, and planned to destroy my reputation so I would lose my claim as heir."Once everyone accepts that she is a broken wolf, the Alpha will abandon her. With no heir left, we can support a new Alpha t

The plaza filled rapidly with members of the pack.Serena stood on the raised platform with red-rimmed eyes, looking deeply wronged as she told the crowd, "She injured Blake last night. Her power is dangerously aggressive!"The black line spreading across her wrist is proof! Once she inherits the Alpha position, every one of us will suffer for it!"Unease moved through the crowd.A blood moon already stirred a wolf's instincts. Many people, swayed by the rumors, began to look uncertain and afraid. The volunteer officers brought Blake into the plaza.Desperate to clear himself, he shouted, "It was Serena! Serena did all of it! She put the forbidden drug in the testing circle! I had nothing to do with it!"The plaza erupted.Panic flashed across Serena's face, but an instant later her cold smile returned."Blake, dark magic has clouded your mind. You are inventing accusations."Council, activate the moonstone scanners. The test will show what is true."Grave-faced, the chief elder operat

Freya used her family's system access to retrieve the archived security footage from the shifting trial.Freya projected the recording onto the wall and said, "Look at this timestamp. Ten minutes before you entered the moonstone circle, Serena went into the heart of it claiming she was leaving a charm to calm you."Fragments of memory locked into place inside my mind. Before the trial began, Serena had handed me a wolf-fang pendant with a kindly smile and said it had been blessed to ease my nerves. The faint bitterness I had smelled when I stepped into the circle had come from that pendant. It had never been a charm for peace or protection. It contained powder from a forbidden drug that suppressed a wolf and triggered excruciating pain.Even then, Serena had intended to label me as a wolf who could not awaken her own wolf and make me a public spectacle.I secured a copy of the footage and went to the pack training hall with Eric.Blake was training inside, distractedly swinging a battl

That night, photographs from Eric's and my mating ceremony raced across every werewolf social platform. In them, the white wolf and the black wolf stood side by side beneath a bright moon. The ceremony's third task, announcing the bond online, was complete. The pack forum and every social group erupted.Within half an hour, every copy of the video showing me collapse at the shifting trial had been taken down.In its place came an avalanche of praise and apologetic comments."So the collapse was caused by her bloodline evolving. We were completely misled by those rumors!""A white-wolf Alpha and an elite black-wolf warrior. Now that is a truly equal mating!""I'm sorry I joined the mockery. Blake was the one who started all of it."I felt nothing as I scrolled through the sudden reversal. The werewolf world had always been brutally practical. When you were weak, even breathing could make you a joke. The moment you revealed power, even indifference became natural authority.I posted a st

The force of the blast swept through the entire private room.Kael, who had been holding up his phone to capture my humiliation, crashed bodily into a leather sofa. His phone flew from his hand, struck the coffee table, and the screen shattered. He shook uncontrollably, his back pressed hard against the cushions, without the courage even to raise his head toward me.This was the inborn dominance of an Alpha bloodline.Faced with my fully unleashed power, ordinary wolves could not even straighten their backs. In that enormous room, Eric alone remained standing. He had shifted too. A massive black wolf stood steadily at my side, his dark coat gleaming coolly beneath the warm lights. His black-wolf aura wrapped around me layer by layer like a solid shield, absorbing some of the power spilling from me so the others would not be badly hurt. The mating marks newly formed on our necks burned hot, and the resonance between our souls rang clearly through both our minds. The blast slammed Blake
