As Ares started the engine of his sleek black sports car, I gave him Maya's address through gritted teeth. The leather seat beneath me was perfectly designed, and I hated how the interior smelled like expensive leather mixed with that intoxicating cologne of his.

The drive passed in tense silence, my mind still reeling from watching him systematically destroy my tires with that knife. The methodical way he'd moved from tire to tire, completely unbothered by my protests, kept replaying in my head.

When he finally pulled up to Maya's modest apartment building, the contrast between his world and mine couldn't have been more obvious. But he didn't drive away. Instead, he put the car in park and turned to look at me.

"Why?" The word burst out of me before I could stop it, all the shock and anger from watching him slash my tires finally finding its voice.

"Why what, little birdie?"

"Why not just kill me?" My voice was shaking now, everything that had happened today catching up to me. "Why m

MAYAI walked into the penthouse and found Ivy sitting on the floor. Not on the couch. Not at the kitchen counter. On the actual floor with her back against the wall and a glass of wine in her hand.I sighed. This new life was really taking a toll on my Bestfriend and I really wished I could help her."That bad?" I asked, dropping my bag by the door."Sophia has photos of me with Ares. She's threatening to release them." She looked at me with teary eyes.I froze. "What?" The crocodile looking bitch!"Someone followed us Saturday night. Took pictures of us leaving the club together." Ivy took a long drink. "She showed me one. Said there are more.""Fuck." I sat down beside her on the floor. "How did that bitch even get those?""I don't know. But she knows about Ares and me. Thinks we're sleeping together even though we're not sleeping together and god this is such a mess." She moaned and pressed her hands to her face. "If those photos get out, I lose everything. My custody case. My cre

Her face flushed red. "Alexander told me you filed for full custody of Lucas. You bitch."I laughed. "He's my son.""He was your son. Now he's mine. He calls me mom. Comes to me when he's scared. Asks me to help with his homework." Each word was designed to cut. "You're nothing to him anymore except a memory that makes him sad.""That's because you and Alexander have been poisoning him against me.""We've been telling him the truth. That his mother abandoned him. That she cares more about her new rich family than about him." Sophia smiled. "And you know what? He believes us."I wanted to hit her. Actually hit her. My entire body shook with the effort of holding back."You filed for custody," Sophia continued. "So now we're going to war. And best believe, Ivy, we will fight with everything we have. Alexander has lawyers. I have connections. And you?" She looked me up and down. "You have nothing except Vincent's pity.""Get out of my face.""Or what? You'll fire me? Go ahead. Try." She

I didn't go to Vincent's office.I turned around and walked straight toward Sophia and Genevieve instead because I’m honestly done hiding and trying not to cause trouble, I needed to know exactly what they’re doing. They were obviously planning something and I definitely needed to have a counter attack, I needed to think like them and act like them, if not, they would trample all over me and ruin my life again.I would never allow it. Now when my son is at stake. My heels clicked against the marble floor loud enough that they both heard me coming.Good. I wanted them to see me. Wanted them to know I wasn't going to cower in my office while they plotted against me.Evil, pretentious bitches. For a second I wished all things were as simple as Maya would make it. Punch their faces, beat them up, make them eat sand and that was the end! But that didn’t work in a world like this, I’d be shipped off to a psych ward before I even blinked. This world worked only with evil brains and even ev

My face burned. "I wasn't aware of that previous decision.""Clearly." Genevieve's smile was sympathetic. False. "Perhaps you should review last quarter's decisions before making new ones? It's important to understand the strategic context before approving budgets that directly contradict your father's established policies."Every person at that table was staring at me. Some looked uncomfortable. Others looked satisfied. Marcus, sitting near the end, was practically smirking.I looked at Vincent. Waiting for him to say something. To defend me. To explain that I was still learning. He said nothing. Just watched me with those cold, calculating eyes. This was a test. He was letting me handle it. Letting me sink or swim on my own."You're right," I said, keeping my voice steady even though I wanted to crawl under the table. "I should have reviewed previous decisions before making that approval. The marketing increase is retracted pending further review of efficiency metrics."Genevieve's

Goodness help me today, my mind is definitely not in the right tracks I thought as I walked into Blackwood headquarters with my coffee in one hand and my dignity barely held together in the other. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ares. Felt his hands on me. Heard the way he'd growled my name. And then I remembered the elevator ride this morning. Ilias's knowing smirk. The bite mark comment. The way Ares had looked at me like he wanted to drag me back to his penthouse and finish what we'd started.I needed to focus. Had to focus. Today was about work, not about my terrible decisions involving dangerous men who made me forget my own name.Patricia was already at her desk when I arrived. "Good morning, Ms. Blackwood. You have the budget review meeting in thirty minutes. Conference Room B."Right. The budget meeting. I'd prepared for this over the weekend before everything had gone sideways with clubbing and Ares and orgasms that still made my thighs clench when I thought about them.F

I woke up with a headache and a very specific memory of exactly why my lips were swollen.Ares.His hands. His mouth. The way he'd looked at me while I came apart underneath him.I groaned and pulled a pillow over my face. What the hell had I been thinking? Oh right, I hadn't been thinking at all. I'd been feeling and wanting and giving in to something that was definitely going to make my life more complicated. My phone said it was seven AM. Monday morning. Time to face reality and pretend last night never happened.I dragged myself out of bed and into the shower, letting the hot water wash away the club smell and hopefully some of the tension still coiled tight in my body. It didn't work. I could still feel Ares's hands on my skin. Still hear the rough sound of his voice in my ear.Stop it, I told myself firmly. It was a mistake. A one-time thing. It's over now.I got dressed in a navy suit that screamed professional and definitely not "I had my neighbor's hands all over me last nigh
