Chapter 61

The First King's Secret

The sky screamed.

The enormous hand of darkness continued forcing its way through the crack above Noctaris. Every finger was the size of a castle tower, and wherever it touched the air, reality rippled like disturbed water.

Citizens ran through the streets in panic.

Parents grabbed their children.

Church bells rang throughout the hidden kingdom.

"The barrier is failing!"

"Everyone inside!"

"Seal the inner gates!"

The once-peaceful city erupted into chaos.

Kael looked from the sky to Aether.

"You knew this was coming."

Aether didn't deny it.

"I've spent ten thousand years trying to prevent it."

Lyra tightened her grip on the Moonblade.

"Then stop speaking in riddles."

"Tell us the truth."

Aether closed his eyes for a long moment before nodding.

"You deserve to know."

He led them deep beneath the palace.

They descended a spiral staircase carved into black crystal until they reached a vast underground chamber.

At its center stood an enormous tree unlike anything Kael had ever seen.

Its trunk was silver.

Its branches shimmered like moonlight.

Golden leaves glowed softly despite the darkness surrounding them.

Ancient roots spread through the chamber walls, pulsing gently as though the tree possessed a heartbeat.

Selene gasped.

"The World Tree..."

Aether nodded.

"It is the last one."

Kael slowly approached it.

The closer he came, the warmer the air became.

He could almost hear whispers drifting from the glowing leaves.

"They're memories," Aether explained quietly.

"The tree remembers every age."

Aether rested one hand against the silver bark.

The chamber dissolved around them.

Suddenly, Kael found himself standing in another time.

The world was young.

Mountains were taller.

The seas stretched farther.

And at the center of a green valley stood a magnificent city built from white stone.

Humans and wolves walked together through its streets.

There were no walls separating them.

No fear.

No hatred.

Children laughed together beneath flowering trees.

Kael watched in amazement.

"They lived together..."

"Yes," Aether replied.

"This was the First Kingdom."

A young woman stepped into view.

Her long silver hair flowed behind her, and wolves followed wherever she walked.

"The First Wolf Queen," Lyra whispered.

Beside her walked a young king wearing white armor.

Aether.

Not old.

Not scarred.

Not burdened.

He laughed as the Wolf Queen nudged him playfully.

"You really were brother and sister," Kael murmured.

"We were."

Aether's voice was filled with longing.

"We believed our kingdom would last forever."

The peaceful vision darkened.

The sun vanished.

The earth trembled.

From the heavens descended a sphere of endless darkness.

It did not crash.

It floated silently above the kingdom.

Then it opened.

The same monstrous hand Kael had just seen reached from within.

People fled in terror.

The sky itself seemed to bleed.

"What is it?" Kael asked.

Aether's expression hardened.

"The Void."

"It exists outside creation."

"It has no life..."

"No death..."

"No beginning."

"Only hunger."

The darkness poured creatures into the world.

Towering beasts.

Winged horrors.

Living shadows.

Entire cities fell within hours.

The First Kingdom fought desperately, but every victory cost thousands of lives.

Finally, the First Wolf Queen stood before the World Tree.

"If we cannot defeat it..."

"Then we must imprison it."

Aether finished the sentence.

"We forged seven sacred seals."

"The Moon Seal."

"The Crown Seal."

"The Spirit Seal."

"And four others lost to history."

Kael frowned.

"So the Shadow Devourer..."

"...wasn't the true enemy."

"No."

"It was merely one of the Void Emperor's generals."

The vision shifted again.

Kael saw Aether kneeling beside his dying sister.

She smiled despite the blood staining her white robes.

"Promise me..."

Her voice was weak.

"No matter how many centuries pass..."

"...protect the seals."

Young Aether gripped her hand.

"I swear it."

The Wolf Queen looked toward the glowing World Tree.

"One day..."

"A child carrying both our bloodlines will be born."

"He will finish what we began."

Her body dissolved into silver light.

The vision faded.

Reality returned.

Kael stood once again beneath the ancient tree.

No one spoke.

Even Marcus, normally skeptical of legends, looked shaken.

"So the prophecy..." Selene whispered.

"...began ten thousand years ago."

Aether nodded.

"It has been passed from generation to generation."

"I erased much of history to keep the seals hidden."

"But secrets never stay buried forever."

A sudden explosion shook the chamber.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

The World Tree flickered.

Aether's face changed instantly.

"The outer barrier has fallen."

Another tremor followed.

This one stronger.

A frightened soldier rushed into the chamber.

"My King!"

"The northern wall has been breached!"

"What attacked us?"

The soldier swallowed hard.

"Not monsters..."

"People."

Kael frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"They wear black armor."

"Their eyes glow crimson."

"But..."

"They're human."

Aether slowly drew a long silver sword hanging beside the World Tree.

"No."

"They were human."

Outside, the gates of Noctaris burst inward.

Thousands of warriors marched through the smoke in perfect silence.

Their black armor reflected the crimson sky.

Each soldier carried the same symbol upon their chest—

A broken crown surrounded by darkness.

Behind them walked a tall figure in flowing robes.

His face was hidden behind a mask of polished obsidian.

He stopped just beyond the shattered gate.

Then, with one effortless motion, he removed the mask.

Kael's breath caught.

The man's face...

Was identical to his own.

The stranger smiled.

"At last..."

"I've found you."

The army behind him dropped to one knee.

In one voice, they shouted,

"Hail the Second King!"

Kael's grip tightened on his sword.

His heart pounded.

"Who..."

"...are you?"

The stranger's smile widened.

"I am the life your father stole from you."

"And I have come to reclaim my throne."
