The moment the voice came through the loudspeaker, Emma felt the ground disappear beneath her.

“Finally.”

That single word was enough to freeze every armed agent in place.

Every helicopter blade seemed to slow.

Every breath in the clearing held.

Emma stood completely still, the letter trembling in her hands.

Daniel’s face tightened.

Ethan didn’t move—but his eyes sharpened like he was suddenly bracing for impact.

Rachel whispered, barely audible:

“No… it can’t be.”

Emma didn’t need to ask who it was.

She already knew.

Because her memory had returned in fragments.

Fragments that were no longer broken.

They were aligned.

Dangerously aligned.

Emma slowly lifted her head toward the trees.

Toward the unseen speaker.

Her voice came out hoarse.

“…You.”

A pause.

Then the voice responded.

Warm.

Calm.

Almost affectionate.

“You remembered.”

Emma’s throat tightened.

The envelope in her hand suddenly felt like it was burning her skin.

Ethan stepped closer to her.

“Emma… what’s going on?”

But she didn’t answer.

Because she was no longer in the present.

She was back in the past.

---

Ten Years Ago

Rain hammered against glass.

A laboratory screamed with alarms.

Emma ran down a hallway barefoot, her breath ragged, her vision blurred.

Behind her—

Shouting.

Gunfire.

Chaos.

And a voice calling her name.

A voice she once trusted more than her own heartbeat.

“Emma, stop running!”

She turned a corner—

And saw him.

Standing in the middle of the corridor.

Calm.

Unhurried.

Watching her like she was already caught.

He smiled.

Not kindly.

Not warmly.

But like a man observing something inevitable.

“It’s too late,” he said.

Emma’s younger self shook her head.

“No… you said you were helping us.”

He tilted his head slightly.

“I am.”

Then—

Gunfire echoed behind her.

Screams.

Her mother’s voice.

Her father shouting her name.

Emma froze.

Tears filled her eyes.

“You lied to us.”

The man sighed.

Almost disappointed.

“I gave you a choice.”

Emma backed away.

“What did you do?”

He stepped forward.

Just one step.

Enough to make her feel cornered.

Enough to make her understand she never had control.

“I saved what mattered,” he said softly.

Emma’s voice cracked.

“Where are my children?”

A pause.

A long one.

Then he smiled.

And said:

“They are exactly where I need them to be.”

---

Present

Emma stumbled backward.

Daniel caught her immediately.

“Emma!”

She clutched the letter tighter.

Her breathing turned uneven.

Because she remembered now.

Not everything.

But enough.

Enough to destroy her.

Ethan stepped in front of her slightly.

Protective.

But his eyes were scanning the treeline.

Waiting.

Listening.

“Who is it?” he asked again, more urgently.

Emma swallowed hard.

Her voice barely came out.

“…He’s not my uncle.”

Silence.

Rachel went rigid.

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Emma shook her head slowly.

More memories surfaced.

Sharper now.

Clearer.

Painful.

“He was never my uncle.”

Her voice cracked.

“He was the lead scientist.”

The words hit like a bullet.

Even Ethan froze.

Rachel whispered, horrified:

“No… Dr. Mercer died in the facility fire.”

Emma let out a hollow laugh.

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.”

A gust of wind swept through the clearing.

And then—

The loudspeaker crackled again.

“Always dramatic, Emma.”

A figure stepped out of the trees.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Like he had all the time in the world.

And when he finally came into view—

Everything inside Emma broke.

Not because she didn’t recognize him.

But because she did.

He hadn’t changed much.

Aged slightly.

A few more lines.

A calmer face.

But the same eyes.

The same expression.

The same controlled certainty.

Dr. Adrian Mercer.

The man behind Project Genesis.

The man Emma had mourned.

The man the world believed was dead.

Ethan raised his weapon instantly.

“Don’t move!”

Mercer didn’t even glance at him.

His eyes were fixed entirely on Emma.

Like nothing else existed.

“Put it down,” Ethan warned.

Mercer smiled faintly.

“You’ll shoot me?” he asked mildly. “After everything I’ve done for your survival?”

Daniel stiffened.

“You destroyed her life,” he said angrily.

Mercer finally glanced at him.

“And yet she is still here.”

His gaze returned to Emma.

“Strong. Intelligent. Adaptable.”

Emma’s hands trembled.

“Why?” she whispered.

It came out broken.

“Why did you do this to us?”

Mercer exhaled slowly.

As if the question bored him.

“Because evolution doesn’t wait for permission.”

Rachel stepped forward suddenly.

“You murdered thousands for this project!”

Mercer tilted his head.

“I refined humanity.”

Hope pressed herself tightly against Emma’s side.

Ava moved closer instinctively.

Sisters.

Unaware of how deeply they had been shaped by him.

Mercer finally looked at Hope.

Then Ava.

Then Emma.

A faint smile formed.

“Perfect outcomes.”

Emma’s stomach twisted.

“Those are my children.”

Mercer corrected her gently.

“Those are my results.”

The words made Ethan take a step forward.

“Enough.”

Mercer sighed.

Then finally acknowledged him.

“Oh Ethan,” he said softly.

A strange familiarity in his tone.

“I was wondering when you’d speak.”

Ethan’s grip tightened on his weapon.

“You killed me once already,” he said coldly.

Mercer nodded.

“I tried.”

Silence fell again.

Emma turned sharply.

“You ordered his assassination.”

Mercer didn’t deny it.

“I ordered containment.”

Daniel looked sick.

“And the twins?” he demanded. “You turned them into experiments.”

Mercer’s expression darkened slightly.

“Survival required sacrifice.”

Hope shook her head quickly.

“No…”

Emma held her tighter.

“It’s okay.”

But it wasn’t okay.

Nothing was okay.

Mercer took a step forward.

Agents immediately aimed their weapons.

But he didn’t stop.

He looked at Emma again.

“You opened the envelope,” he said quietly.

Emma froze.

Her hand instinctively tightened around it.

“How did you know?”

A faint smile.

“Because you were always predictable when cornered.”

Emma’s voice rose.

“What is in here?”

Mercer’s eyes softened slightly.

Almost… regretful.

Then he said:

“Your original choice.”

Emma blinked.

“What choice?”

Mercer tilted his head.

“You asked me to save them.”

The world went silent.

Emma’s breath caught.

“No…”

He continued.

“You said you couldn’t choose between them.”

Emma shook her head.

“No, I didn’t.”

But even as she said it—

Another memory surfaced.

Faster this time.

Stronger.

Clearer.

A burning facility.

Sirens.

Her crying.

Holding two babies.

Begging.

“Please… save both of them.”

Emma staggered.

Daniel caught her again.

“Emma!”

Mercer watched calmly.

“You agreed to the procedure,” he said softly.

“You authorized Genesis.”

Emma shook her head violently.

“No… I was manipulated.”

Mercer’s eyes sharpened.

“You initiated it.”

Silence.

The weight of those words crushed everything.

Ethan looked at her differently now.

Rachel stepped back.

Even Hope looked confused.

Ava whispered:

“Mom?”

Emma shook her head.

“No… I didn’t—”

But the memories were returning too fast now.

Too real.

Too sharp.

And then—

The final memory came.

The one she had buried the deepest.

Emma standing in a sterile room.

Signing a document.

Hands shaking.

Mercer beside her.

Calm.

Patient.

And her voice saying:

“Do it.”

Emma dropped the envelope.

Her knees weakened.

“No…”

Mercer stepped closer.

And for the first time—

His voice softened completely.

“You built them, Emma.”

A pause.

Then the final words that shattered her reality.

“And you told me which child to save.”

A long silence followed.

Then Mercer added quietly:

“But you never knew which one I chose.”

Emma looked up slowly.

Horror spreading through her chest.

“…What did you do?”

Mercer smiled.

And for the first time—

It wasn’t controlled.

It was personal.

“I kept the one who would survive me.”

He paused.

Then glanced toward the trees behind him.

And spoke into the speaker:

“Bring her in.”

Emma turned slowly.

Her breath caught.

Because footsteps were approaching.

And emerging from the forest—

Was another version of her.

But this one smiled.

And said:

“Hello, mother.”
