The room fell silent the moment the words left my mouth.

The ingratiating look on Adrian Haynes' face instantly stiffened. He whipped around and stared as I, Sylvia Larson, slipped the gifts back. Disbelief flashed across his face before his expression darkened.

"What the hell's gotten into you, Sylvia? Summer just gave birth, and she's still recovering. What's with the snide remarks? Did the car accident knock something loose in your head?

"Summer's been through enough. As her best friend, you should've supported her when she decided to be a single mother by choice. Why are you trying to upset her instead?" Adrian kept his voice low, but his tone was thick with barely restrained anger.

The barrage of accusations instantly painted me as a mentally unstable woman. Summer Cortez was even quicker to react. Her eyes reddened, and she slumped weakly against the headboard as tears streamed down her cheeks.

"Don't blame her, Adrian…" Summer sniffled, her voice thick with hurt. "Sylvia's just jealous that I get to have an adorable baby without having to put up with stinking men. After all, I'm not like her.

"Her whole world revolves around men. She doesn't even have a life of her own." Summer pretended to dab at tears that weren't even there with a tissue as she spoke, perfectly maintaining her persona as an independent woman who despised men.

The sight of the two despicable cheaters before me made my stomach churn with disgust.

I'd spent two weeks in the hospital after the car accident. Adrian only visited me twice during that entire time, claiming he was too busy with work.

As it turned out, his so-called work was to wait on Summer hand and foot at the postnatal retreat.

I let out a cold laugh. There was no point in arguing with them. Instead, I quietly pressed the record button on the phone in my pocket.

"Alright then," I said. I fixed Adrian with a cold stare before continuing, "Since you all seem to think I've lost my mind, I won't get in the way of your happy little family of three anymore."

With that, I turned around and strode toward the door.

"Sylvia! What the hell are you talking about?" Adrian shouted furiously from behind me.

Just as I was about to step out of the room, the baby, Noah Cortez, blew another raspberry in the cradle as he waved his chubby little hands in the air.

Once again, Noah's childish voice rang out clearly in my ears. [Daddy's so scary. Just yesterday, he used Aunt Sylvia's credit card to pay the remaining 60 thousand dollars on Mommy's bill.]

I instantly stopped in my tracks. What did he mean by that?

I forced myself not to look back as I walked straight out of the postnatal retreat. Once I was inside the car, I rolled up the windows and took a deep breath. Then, I pulled out my phone and opened my banking app.

I entered my password and tapped on the statement for my supplementary credit card. One transaction after another flashed across the screen in red. Each one of them stung my eyes.

The first entry was dated September 12th with a 42-thousand-dollar payment at the Chanel boutique in Lunavia Plaza. The next was on September 15th, which covered the remaining 60 thousand dollars at Harmonium Postnatal Retreat.

Then came the charge of almost 19 thousand dollars spent at an imported baby goods boutique on September 18th. Altogether, the charges added up to 121 thousand dollars. Every single one of these transactions was made on the supplementary credit card I'd given to Adrian.

Back then, he'd claimed that his company had cash flow problems and needed a spare credit card. I had handed it over without a second thought, but never did I imagine that he would use my money to support his mistress and their illegitimate child.

I stared at the figures on the screen, my fingers turning white from how tightly I gripped the phone. Then, I dialed the bank's customer service hotline without a moment's hesitation.

"Hello, how may I help you today?" the representative asked.

"I'd like to report the supplementary credit card ending in 7892 as lost and have it deactivated immediately," I said.

"Certainly, ma'am. Once the card has been deactivated, it will no longer be able to process any transactions."

"Alright," I replied.

I'd barely hung up when my phone began buzzing nonstop. Every notification was a WhatsApp message from Adrian.

"Sylvia, are you done throwing a tantrum?" he texted.

"Why did you deactivate the card? I'm paying for Summer's postpartum meals. How am I supposed to buy her supplements now?"

"Hurry up and reactivate the card!" he demanded.

"Have you seriously lost your mind? If you're sick, go see a doctor instead of acting like a psycho!"

More than a dozen messages from Adrian flooded my screen. Every one of them dripped with entitled demands. He was living off my money, yet he was acting like he was the one calling the shots.

I stared at the messages coldly and took screenshots of them all before blocking Adrian's contact on WhatsApp.

Just like that, the world fell blissfully silent.

Then, I tapped on another WhatsApp profile. It belonged to Elaine Mullins, the nurse from the postnatal retreat. I'd added her when I visited Summer before.

"Elaine, could you help me keep an eye on the two people in that room for me?" I texted.

The color instantly drained from Adrian's face. Without missing a beat, I pulled out the complete paternity test."The paternity test here proves that the two of you have concealed the existence of your illegitimate child and, while posing as my best friend and boyfriend, swindled me out of 120 thousand dollars," I stated. At that moment, the motive and the truth behind the fraud finally formed a complete chain of evidence.Lawrence stepped forward and delivered the final blow. "Although your phone has been destroyed, Ms. Cortez, we were able to recover all the chat records detailing your conspiracy to swindle Ms. Larson out of her property from the cloud drive with the help of the police." Then, he pulled out a printed copy of the chat records. "These messages clearly show that the two of you planned to transfer the asset through illegal means after swindling Ms. Larson out of her property," he continued.Just like that, their last shred of hope was completely shattered.Adrian

Adrian nodded frantically at my words as though he'd just been thrown a lifeline. "Yes, that's right! There's absolutely no way Noah's my child. Summer was the one who threw herself at me! "She kept selling this fake persona as an independent woman online, but the truth is, she can't even live without a man. For all I know, that bastard could've been fathered by some old man she was sleeping with!"I only helped her because I felt sorry for her as a pregnant woman, but I never expected her to drag me into this mess. You have to believe me, Sylvia. I'm innocent!" he pleaded. The words had barely left his mouth when a shrill, furious scream rang out from the entrance."Adrian Haynes, you worthless son of a bitch!" Looking every bit like a madwoman, Summer rushed in with her hair in complete disarray, with Noah clutched in her arms. She'd just been released from the police station on bail when she'd rushed straight over after seeing Adrian's statement.Summer arrived just in time t

The lead police officer wore a stern look on his face as he held up his identification directly in front of the livestream camera. The red lights on their body cameras blinked steadily, adding to their cold and imposing presence. The fake smile on Summer's face instantly froze as the diapers in her hands dropped to the floor."I-I don't know what you're talking about." She was still stammering out excuses when the livestream was abruptly cut off.Nothing was more humiliating than being publicly exposed by the authorities themselves. In less than half an hour, the Department of Health's official account had released a public statement. "The Department of Health has recently dismantled a criminal operation involved in the forgery of medical records."Our investigation found that Summer Cortez knowingly purchased a fake overseas IVF certificate to gain online attention. In reality, she had conceived naturally within the country. The case remains under further investigation," the sta

The next morning, I could tell that something was off the moment I arrived at the office. My coworkers kept stealing uneasy glances at me, only to look away whenever our eyes met.I pulled out my phone. As expected, Summer had posted a long, self-pitying statement from her hospital bed."Do you have any idea how much I suffered to undergo IVF overseas? After nearly losing my life to bring Noah into this world, my vicious so-called best friend falsely accused me of having an affair and drove me into the hospital with postpartum depression."Here's my overseas medical record. The truth speaks for itself!" she declared.Attached was a screenshot of an IVF medical record stamped with an official seal. She was trying to use the forged medical record to salvage her image and turn the tables on me.Just then, a loud commotion suddenly erupted downstairs.I walked over to the window and looked down. Dozens of die-hard fans and paid trolls were waving banners and blocking the company's r

"What are you doing? Give that back!" Adrian shouted, his eyes widening in alarm. He lunged at me like a madman in an attempt to snatch the paternity test back.I took a step back just in time. His fingers only managed to catch the bottom half of the report before it was torn in two.Without missing a beat, I slipped the half containing the conclusion into my pocket. I'd deliberately kept the result hidden so I could save it as a trump card for later."Everyone, look at the screen!" I shouted before pressing the button on the presentation remote. The live display on the big screen switched instantly. A crystal-clear security footage from the hallway of the postnatal retreat began to play. The footage showed Adrian pinning Summer against the wall. Their lips were locked together in a passionate kiss while Summer's hand caressed Adrian's back. The timestamp revealed it'd been recorded on the very night Summer had been loudly proclaiming that she "hated men".The ballroom fell into

With that, I turned around and headed upstairs without another glance. The moment I returned to my office, I immediately called Erika Douglas, a friend of mine who worked in the healthcare system."Can you look into the sealed records for a private clinic? The doctor's name is Dr. Howell. I need you to pay close attention to any filings related to overseas medical documents," I said."Got it. I'll let you know as soon as I find something," she replied.Less than half an hour later, Erika sent me a screenshot. "Found it. Dr. Howell's clinic isn't even licensed to handle international medical documentation. "They recently had a batch of counterfeit seals made bearing the names of overseas hospitals. The authorities are already investigating them," she texted.A faint smile tugged at my lips as I looked at the screenshot. Another link in the chain of evidence had fallen into place.Just as I was about to get off work, the receptionist rushed into my office in a panic. "This is bad
