Chapter 4

Autor: Double Edge
Three days passed. I didn’t receive a single dollar.

What I did receive were countless insulting messages from my mother, Victor, and those meddling relatives.

I packaged all the evidence and sent it to my lawyer, preparing to file the lawsuit.

Monday arrived, the day of an important partnership meeting with the Rivers Group.

Just before the meeting started, a sudden commotion broke out downstairs.

I walked over to the window and looked down, frowning.

My mother was sitting on the ground, her hair disheveled, crying loudly with tears and snot running down her face. In her hands she held up a sign:

“Suzy York, Executive at Nova Cloud Group. An unfilial daughter who abandoned her sick mother and drove her own brother to despair.”

Victor stood beside her, holding his phone and livestreaming, his voice choked with fake emotion.

“Everyone watching, please tell me if this is fair! My sister works as a director at a big company, earning hundreds of thousands a year, but she refuses to pay a single dollar for our mother’s medical bills!

“My mom saved every penny to help her buy a house, and even when she got sick, she didn’t dare go to the hospital to save money for her!

“And now my sister wants to destroy us. She’s suing us and trying to wipe us out!

“Is this what people call an independent woman? Is this the kind of partner the Rivers Group works with?”

The number of viewers in the livestream shot up rapidly, and the comments were filled with insults directed at me.

Everyone in the conference room turned to look at me.

Some with contempt, some with sympathy, and some simply eager to watch the drama unfold.

My whole body trembled with anger as I strode quickly down to the lobby.

The moment my mother saw me come out, she rushed forward and clutched my legs.

“Suzy! I’m begging you! Please don’t sue us!

“Your brother just got his job. You can’t ruin him! Take the money if you want. It’s the money meant to save my life. Take it all! I won’t get treatment anymore. I’ll just die, okay?”

Her move of playing the victim instantly ignited the crowd’s anger.

“How could you be so heartless?”

“Your mother gave birth to you and raised you, and this is how you repay her? What an ungrateful daughter!”

Victor shoved the phone right up to my face and shouted.

“Suzy! Do you see this? Mom is kneeling and begging you! Do you have any heart at all?”

I took the security guard’s megaphone from nearby.

“Are you done performing yet?

“You say I abandoned you? Last week when you were in the hospital, I was the one paying the medical bills and taking care of everything for you. Where was Victor? He was out house hunting.

“You say I took your life-saving money? That hundred thousand was my salary I left with you! You used my money to buy Victor a house, and now you turn around and accuse me of stealing it?

“And Victor, didn’t you say you were a valued employee at the Rivers Group? Is causing a scene in the company lobby your idea of professionalism?”

Victor’s expression changed, but with the support of the livestream viewers who didn’t know the truth, he stiffened his neck and shouted, “Stop slandering me!

“I got that job through my own ability! You’re the one throwing your money around to bully your own family!”

I let out a cold laugh. “Through your own ability? Fine. Then let’s see if you still have the ability to keep that job after today.”

My mother straightened up, trembling with rage, and raised her hand at me. “You dare ruin your brother’s future!

“Today I’ll teach you a lesson on behalf of your father, you unfilial daughter!”

The slap came swinging down with force.

I instinctively closed my eyes and tried to dodge.

But a hand caught my mother’s wrist firmly in midair.

The entire lobby fell silent.

I opened my eyes and saw Ethan standing in front of me.

“Mr… Mr. Rivers?” Victor froze on the spot.

I ignored him and walked to the bedside. When my mother saw me, a flicker of light burst into her cloudy eyes. Her mouth made a vague “ah… ah…” sound, and tears slid from the corners of her eyes into the pillow.I took an envelope out of my bag and set it on the bedside table.Victor’s eyes lit up. He grabbed the envelope at once. “I knew you wouldn’t dare ignore this! How much is it? A hundred thousand? Two hundred thousand?”He tore it open impatiently. With a clatter, a few coins and a crumpled bill fell to the floor and rolled under the bed.Two dollars in total.Victor froze. A strained rattling sound came from my mother’s throat, and the light in her eyes faded instantly.“Suzy! Are you screwing with me?” Victor roared, raising his fist as he lunged toward me.I looked at him coldly and lifted my phone.“I recorded everything. If you try anything stupid, I won’t go easy on you.“Also, I’ve already spoken to a lawyer. For parents who abandoned their children, the law only requires

I made a point of going to see them in person.Victor was squatting by the roadside, his hair a tangled mess, looking like a homeless man.My mother sat on the curb nearby, staring blankly at the towering riverfront tower in the distance. Now it was nothing more than a shattered dream. When Victor saw me step out of the car, he suddenly jumped up and rushed toward me, trying to grab me, but the sharply dressed bodyguard stopped him three meters away.“Suzy! Are you satisfied now? Huh? The whole family’s ruined. Are you happy now?”He shouted, his face streaked with tears and snot. “I’m your brother! Your boyfriend could spare a little money, and it would be enough to set me up for life. How can you be so heartless?”I took off my sunglasses and looked at the brother who had once been so arrogant. All I felt was pity.“Victor, the one who ruined your life wasn’t me. It was the greed you and Mom chose.“From the time we were children, Mom favored you and expected me to give up everythin

That evening, I returned home with my lawyer. The moment I walked in, I saw the place in complete disarray. My mother sat on the couch wiping her tears, while Victor frantically called people trying to borrow money, only to have the calls hung up one after another. When she saw me enter, my mother scrambled toward me on hands and knees.“Suzy! You’re finally here! Quick, call your boyfriend. Your brother can’t lose his job!“As long as he doesn’t fire Victor, I’ll return the hundred thousand I owed you! I’ll sell everything I have if I have to!”I stepped aside to avoid her reaching hands and walked straight to the coffee table, placing a letter from my lawyer down on it.“That hundred thousand was mine to begin with. If you still refuse to return it, the court will enforce it.“I came today to inform you of something else.”I pointed to the house we had lived in for decades. It was old and worn but located in the city center and worth a great deal.“This house was left by Dad. Even th

My mother’s eyes shifted, and a greedy, calculating smile spread across her face.“Return it? Why would we return it? Your sister’s about to marry into a wealthy family. Do you think she cares about a mere hundred thousand?”“We’ll keep the money. It’ll be the capital you use to turn things around. Your sister’s soft-hearted. If we play our cards right, that money will end up ours sooner or later.“Come on, let’s go home. We need to figure out how to plant your money-tree sister back where she belongs!”Watching them whisper by the roadside and eventually leave in a taxi, smiling as if everything had worked out, a chill ran down my spine as I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window above.Ethan walked up behind me and handed me a cup of hot cocoa. “What’s wrong?”I tightened my grip on the cup. “Knowing them, they’re probably plotting something.”Ethan let out a cold laugh, a sharp glint flashing in his eyes. “Let them plot.“Sometimes the best feeling is letting your enemy think they’ve

I was trembling with anger and was just about to argue back when a warm hand suddenly took mine, firm and steady.Ethan stepped forward and moved slightly in front of me, shielding me behind him.Facing the livestream camera, his voice was calm and resolute, every word clear.“First, Suzy earned her position through flawless professional ability and countless sleepless nights of hard work. She is an indispensable partner of the Rivers Group, not anyone’s accessory.“Second, Suzy is not an outsider. She is the woman I cherish above all else, and the future Mrs. Rivers.“Everything I’ve done today isn’t because someone manipulated me. It’s because it’s the husband’s duty to protect his wife and clears away the parasites trying to drain her dry.”The statement instantly set off an uproar. The livestream was still running, and the comment section flipped instantly.“Oh damn! The boss’ wife-to-be? That twist nearly gave me whiplash!”“Now that’s how a real man protects his wife!”“That brot

Victor, who had been arrogant just moments ago, suddenly forced on a slick, flattering smile and bent forward in an exaggerated bow.“Mr. Rivers! What brings you down here personally? This is just a small family matter. We never meant to disturb you.“I’m Victor York from the logistics department. You remember… the one you put in a word for before…”My mother immediately pulled her hand back and hurried over with a fawning smile.“You must be Mr. Rivers. My, you’re so young and accomplished. I’m Victor’s mother.“Our Victor admires you so much.“This is all just a misunderstanding today. I was simply disciplining my disobedient daughter. Sorry you had to witness this embarrassment.”As she spoke, she shot me a fierce glare, clearly signaling for me to hurry up and apologize to the boss.Ethan turned and placed a steady hand on my shoulder, gently smoothing the slightly messy strands of my hair.“Suzy, are you alright?”The smiles on Victor and my mother’s faces froze instantly.I shook
