Chapter 2

Author: Tyche
Adrian called right away. I declined, so he sent me a string of voice messages.

"Selena, are you done making a scene?

"It's all arranged. Tomorrow night, you're going as Luca's date and doing everything on the schedule with him.

"If anything goes wrong, you'll make more than just me look bad."

He'd put me up as a chip on the betting table. What did his pride have to do with me now?

There was a file in the chat spelling out tomorrow night's schedule.

One: Link arms and finish a drink together.

Two: Exchange cheek kisses.

Three: Share the first dance.

The group chat lit up again.

"Who put the first dance on there? Aren't they scared she'll step on Luca and break his foot?"

"Luca linking arms for a drink with her? That's like drinking with a pig."

Luca, the one they'd been going on about, sent just two words. "Shut up."

I was about to close the group chat when my friend Mia Lawson's video call popped up.

She was furious.

"Selena, does Adrian think he's already the Don? That he can use everyone around him as a gambling chip?"

I froze for a second.

"How did you know?"

"Someone posted your old photos and screenshots of the group chat on the families' private forum. Now everyone's piling on."

Mia looked ready to explode.

"I've already got the username of whoever spread those photos. He'd better think hard about who he's messing with."

Seeing her so angry on my behalf finally made me smile, but she was still fuming.

"Why don't you just post a picture of how you look now and let those jerks see for themselves?"

"No."

I went to the closet and picked out the burgundy satin gown.

"What would a photo prove? When they see me tomorrow night, they'll know exactly what they did."

Mia understood what I was planning.

"So you're still going to the Bellini family's gala?"

"Of course. Backing out now would just hand them my bet money."

Mia shrieked, "Then go! Make all those gossips who hide behind their family names see the truth!"

After we hung up, someone knocked on my door.

My mother came in, her eyes landing on the gown by the bed.

"Going to a party tomorrow?"

"Mm-hmm."

She waited a moment before asking, "Are you going to meet that boy you've been talking to online?"

I didn't answer.

For the past year, I'd made losing weight my whole life to please Adrian.

I didn't dare eat a single full meal. Even on nights when hunger kept me awake, I only let myself drink water.

I went from nearly 200 pounds to 150, then leveled off at around 100.

My mother had supported me through it all. She'd seen me secretly wiping away tears in front of the mirror.

She knew how long I'd prepared for tomorrow, but she only came over and stroked my hair.

"You don't need anyone's approval. Don't push yourself too hard just to make someone regret it."

After the door closed, I ducked my head and scrubbed at my eyes.

My phone lit up.

It was a message from Luca.

He hadn't responded to anyone. His notice to the group read, "Delete all private photos of her."

The chat, so noisy a moment ago, went silent.

Then he tagged me. "If you're not happy about this, I can cancel the whole gala."

Adrian rushed to smooth things over. "Come on, Luca, it's not that serious. It's just a joke between young people."

Luca replied, "It is."

I looked at that short message and opened his profile for the first time.

It was completely blank. There wasn't even a photo.

Still, something about him felt familiar.

As if we'd met before, though I couldn't remember where.

At least when everyone else was busy laughing at me, he'd been the one thinking I shouldn't have to put up with any of it.Luca was quiet for a while, then worked up the courage to say, "I never forgot you."He turned to me, his eyes steady."I like you, Selena."Not because you're beautiful, but because you're still the girl who stands up for other people. Even after being hurt, you're brave enough to fight for yourself."His voice tightened. "I don't want to keep watching you from a distance."I want to win you over. For real."Looking at Luca, I realized I didn't have to fight so hard to prove I deserved real love.Someone would remember something I'd said as a child.Someone would remind me, when I felt worthless, that I didn't have to become what anyone else wanted. That I only had to be myself.I blinked back my tears and smiled."Then you'd better step up your game. I've got plenty of guys chasing me."Luca finally smiled."That's okay."He took my hand and held my gaze."This t

"Your date and no one else's?"Adrian looked like he'd heard a joke, his eyes full of mockery."Luca, you don't really think sharing a few dances with her makes her yours, do you?"I shot him a cold look."Adrian, I don't belong to anyone."Especially not to someone who used me as a chip."I took out my phone and opened that 100-person group chat."Since you think this is just a game, let's play it all the way to the end."I sent a file to dozens of email addresses at once.Back when I was helping Adrian analyze his rivals, I'd stumbled on evidence that he was fixing match results on the underground gaming platform. He'd even been using the Ferro family's name to collect protection money from smaller families behind everyone's back.I'd never planned to make any of it public. But now, I wasn't going to keep any more of his secrets."Don't you love placing bets?"I looked at him and smiled."Then let's show everyone exactly what you're worth."Adrian's phone suddenly started ringing non

The smile vanished from Adrian's face."Luca, you're not really taking this bet seriously, are you?"Selena and I have been together for a year. This is between us."Luca's expression was calm."Does knowing her for a long time give you the right to use her as a gambling chip?"Adrian gritted his teeth, then turned to me."Selena, I admit tonight went a little too far, but I never actually wanted to break up."It was just a game. Why do you have to make such a big deal out of it?"I glanced down at the red marks he'd left on my wrist, and a sudden wave of exhaustion washed over me.He still had no idea what he'd actually done wrong. He didn't care that I'd been humiliated in public. He only cared about saving face.If I still looked like the girl in that photo, would he be trying to explain himself? No.I said coldly, "Weren't you the one who said a bet's a bet? Now you can't take it?"Adrian finally snapped."It was a joke!""But I'm not a joke."I said slowly, "Adrian, we're done."W

I looked at his hand and placed mine in it.He led me to the center of the dance floor.Luca stood tall, his presence cool and commanding.Beside him, in my burgundy gown, I looked radiant.Together, we were the undisputed stars of the night.Luca's hand hovered at my waist, barely touching me. Unlike everyone else, he wasn't trying to flatter me.I asked him quietly, "Do you usually play along with bets like this?"Luca looked down at me."No.""Then what's this?"He was quiet for a moment before he answered, "Because it's you."My heart skipped a beat. And Adrian saw all of it.He finally faced a brutal truth. The girl who'd once believed his promises was no longer waiting around for him to come back. And he'd thrown it all away himself. When the music ended, the ballroom erupted in applause. The scorekeeper looked around at everyone."Third task complete."The bet is over."The big screen refreshed. Every bet against me showing up was marked as a loss. The list of bets scrolled up l

It was a simple gesture, but it made the whole ballroom go quiet again.Everyone knew the three couples' challenges were next.If I'd looked like the 200-pound girl in the photo, they'd have had their jokes ready. But now, no one dared say a word.Because the woman standing in front of Luca was me, and all of New York's upper crust was starting to see me in a new light. The man keeping score cleared his throat and checked the list in his hand."First task, the linked-arm toast."The moment he said it, a waiter brought over two glasses of champagne. Some people instinctively looked at Luca. They'd assumed someone of Luca's standing would just go through the motions, bet or no bet.But the next second, Luca took the glass without the slightest hesitation. He turned to me."Is this okay?"I looked at him and nodded.Luca took my wrist and handed me the other glass. Our arms linked together. The champagne glasses caught the light of the crystal chandelier. The task was supposed to be a jok

The moment I said it, the whole ballroom fell dead silent.Everyone was staring at me, as if to make sure they'd heard right. Some people scrolled through the group chat, then looked up at me again. The fat girl they'd mocked as a "sow" was actually the stunning woman standing in front of them. The man who'd been running the bet was the first to lose his composure. He compared me to the old photo on his phone and stared in disbelief."Is this... really the same person?"No one answered him. They were all too busy searching my face for any resemblance. They looked down at the photo, then up at me.Only then did they realize my features had never changed. The only thing that had changed was how they looked at me.Whispers rippled through the ballroom."If she hadn't said it herself, I never would have recognized her.""So Adrian never knew what she looks like now?"Whoever said that couldn't help glancing at Adrian.Everyone knew that if Adrian had seen what I really looked like, he neve
