Chapter 4

Author: Tyche
On the day of the charity gala, someone posted a photo in the group chat.

It was a stainless steel toilet seat in the ballroom's restroom.

"Had it swapped out specially. Heard 200 pounds will crack a plastic one."

The chat got rowdier. I couldn't be bothered to reply.

Soon, Mia burst into my place with a whole case of jewelry and accessories.

"Tonight I'm going to make that jerk regret it for the rest of his life!"

Mia did my makeup and hair, then took out that burgundy gown.

Its clean lines hugged my waist. Paired with diamond drop earrings, the look was polished enough for the occasion, with a cool, striking edge.

When I came out dressed, Mia's jaw dropped. It took her a moment to find her voice.

"I swear, the second Adrian sees you, he's going to throw himself at you."

Her eyes were practically sparkling with excitement.

"Vivian's always playing innocent to win sympathy.

"But tonight, she'll be lucky if anyone notices her next to you."

Then someone uploaded a video from the gala to the group chat.

A huge banner hung over the hotel's main entrance.

"A Warm Welcome to Our 200-Pound Goddess!"

A few young heirs stood beneath it, doubled over laughing.

One of them shouted at the camera, "Ms. Hart, if you don't show up soon, we'll have to cancel your special welcome ceremony!"

Adrian scoffed, "Someone who won't even post a photo thinks she can stand in front of New York's biggest families?"

Vivian made a show of defending me.

"Adrian, maybe she's just not used to events like this.

"With the way she looks, of course she's nervous."

Mia's face hardened, and she snatched up her car keys.

"Get in the car. Tonight, let's see who really doesn't belong on that red carpet."

As I picked up my clutch, a new friend request appeared on my phone.

Luca.

I accepted.

A moment later, Luca texted, "This is my fault. I didn't know they'd set that up at the entrance.

"If you don't want to come, I'll just cancel the gala."

He'd been part of the bet too, but unlike the others, he hadn't treated me as something to gamble away for their amusement.

I replied, "We made a bet. I'm not backing out."

After a moment, he wrote back, "Ms. Hart, I'm honored to be your date."

Half an hour later, the car pulled up at the entrance of a private hotel in Manhattan.

Tonight's charity gala was cohosted by several of New York's oldest mafia families, and luxury cars lined the curb outside.

Mia had planned to go in with me, but just before we got out, she got an urgent call from home.

Before she left, she grabbed my hand.

"If anyone gives you trouble tonight, call me right away."

I smiled, nodded, and got out of the car. As I stepped into the elevator, I spotted a tall man through the glass.

He had a handsome profile and was telling his men to take down the banner.

In its place went a new one that read "Welcome, Ms. Hart."

The ballroom was on the third floor of the hotel.

The moment the elevator doors opened, I could already hear laughter.

"It's past six and she's still not here. Looks like this money's mine."

"But why isn't Luca here either?"

Adrian sneered, "As long as Selena doesn't show up, I win tonight's bet."

His voice was full of contempt. "Looking like that, would she really dare face me?"

Vivian chimed in softly, "Don't think so badly of her.

"When it comes down to it, she just wants someone to like her."

The ballroom burst into another round of laughter.

I stopped outside the door and reached for the handle.

Just then, a deep voice came from behind me.

"Selena?"

I turned around.

At the other end of the hallway, a man in a black suit was walking toward me.

It was the handsome man from the hotel entrance.

He was tall, with the top button of his shirt undone and understated silver cufflinks at his wrists.

When he got close enough to see my face clearly, he faltered mid-step.

I looked at him, and fragments of memory surfaced.

"You're... Luca?"

Someone inside the ballroom called out, "Ten seconds left to bet!

"Ten!

"Nine!

"Eight!"

Luca kept staring at me, his eyes filled with emotions I couldn't read.

I looked away and turned to face the door.

When the count reached one, I grabbed the door handle and pushed it open.

At least when everyone else was busy laughing at me, he'd been the one thinking I shouldn't have to put up with any of it.Luca was quiet for a while, then worked up the courage to say, "I never forgot you."He turned to me, his eyes steady."I like you, Selena."Not because you're beautiful, but because you're still the girl who stands up for other people. Even after being hurt, you're brave enough to fight for yourself."His voice tightened. "I don't want to keep watching you from a distance."I want to win you over. For real."Looking at Luca, I realized I didn't have to fight so hard to prove I deserved real love.Someone would remember something I'd said as a child.Someone would remind me, when I felt worthless, that I didn't have to become what anyone else wanted. That I only had to be myself.I blinked back my tears and smiled."Then you'd better step up your game. I've got plenty of guys chasing me."Luca finally smiled."That's okay."He took my hand and held my gaze."This t

"Your date and no one else's?"Adrian looked like he'd heard a joke, his eyes full of mockery."Luca, you don't really think sharing a few dances with her makes her yours, do you?"I shot him a cold look."Adrian, I don't belong to anyone."Especially not to someone who used me as a chip."I took out my phone and opened that 100-person group chat."Since you think this is just a game, let's play it all the way to the end."I sent a file to dozens of email addresses at once.Back when I was helping Adrian analyze his rivals, I'd stumbled on evidence that he was fixing match results on the underground gaming platform. He'd even been using the Ferro family's name to collect protection money from smaller families behind everyone's back.I'd never planned to make any of it public. But now, I wasn't going to keep any more of his secrets."Don't you love placing bets?"I looked at him and smiled."Then let's show everyone exactly what you're worth."Adrian's phone suddenly started ringing non

The smile vanished from Adrian's face."Luca, you're not really taking this bet seriously, are you?"Selena and I have been together for a year. This is between us."Luca's expression was calm."Does knowing her for a long time give you the right to use her as a gambling chip?"Adrian gritted his teeth, then turned to me."Selena, I admit tonight went a little too far, but I never actually wanted to break up."It was just a game. Why do you have to make such a big deal out of it?"I glanced down at the red marks he'd left on my wrist, and a sudden wave of exhaustion washed over me.He still had no idea what he'd actually done wrong. He didn't care that I'd been humiliated in public. He only cared about saving face.If I still looked like the girl in that photo, would he be trying to explain himself? No.I said coldly, "Weren't you the one who said a bet's a bet? Now you can't take it?"Adrian finally snapped."It was a joke!""But I'm not a joke."I said slowly, "Adrian, we're done."W

I looked at his hand and placed mine in it.He led me to the center of the dance floor.Luca stood tall, his presence cool and commanding.Beside him, in my burgundy gown, I looked radiant.Together, we were the undisputed stars of the night.Luca's hand hovered at my waist, barely touching me. Unlike everyone else, he wasn't trying to flatter me.I asked him quietly, "Do you usually play along with bets like this?"Luca looked down at me."No.""Then what's this?"He was quiet for a moment before he answered, "Because it's you."My heart skipped a beat. And Adrian saw all of it.He finally faced a brutal truth. The girl who'd once believed his promises was no longer waiting around for him to come back. And he'd thrown it all away himself. When the music ended, the ballroom erupted in applause. The scorekeeper looked around at everyone."Third task complete."The bet is over."The big screen refreshed. Every bet against me showing up was marked as a loss. The list of bets scrolled up l

It was a simple gesture, but it made the whole ballroom go quiet again.Everyone knew the three couples' challenges were next.If I'd looked like the 200-pound girl in the photo, they'd have had their jokes ready. But now, no one dared say a word.Because the woman standing in front of Luca was me, and all of New York's upper crust was starting to see me in a new light. The man keeping score cleared his throat and checked the list in his hand."First task, the linked-arm toast."The moment he said it, a waiter brought over two glasses of champagne. Some people instinctively looked at Luca. They'd assumed someone of Luca's standing would just go through the motions, bet or no bet.But the next second, Luca took the glass without the slightest hesitation. He turned to me."Is this okay?"I looked at him and nodded.Luca took my wrist and handed me the other glass. Our arms linked together. The champagne glasses caught the light of the crystal chandelier. The task was supposed to be a jok

The moment I said it, the whole ballroom fell dead silent.Everyone was staring at me, as if to make sure they'd heard right. Some people scrolled through the group chat, then looked up at me again. The fat girl they'd mocked as a "sow" was actually the stunning woman standing in front of them. The man who'd been running the bet was the first to lose his composure. He compared me to the old photo on his phone and stared in disbelief."Is this... really the same person?"No one answered him. They were all too busy searching my face for any resemblance. They looked down at the photo, then up at me.Only then did they realize my features had never changed. The only thing that had changed was how they looked at me.Whispers rippled through the ballroom."If she hadn't said it herself, I never would have recognized her.""So Adrian never knew what she looks like now?"Whoever said that couldn't help glancing at Adrian.Everyone knew that if Adrian had seen what I really looked like, he neve
