Chapter 9

Penulis: Cottony Cloud
Jennie felt her anger ignite all at once.

She turned her head and shot back coldly, “When you’re working, I wait at least two hours every single time. The longest was when you had that meeting. I sat in the car downstairs for six hours. Did I complain even once?”

William let out a short, mocking laugh through his nose.

“How is that the same? Jennie, do you really think your comfortable life, your ability to swipe a card without checking the limit, everything you have… where do you think it all came from?”

There it was again.

Jennie knew no matter what she said, he would always make himself right. She suddenly felt exhausted. She shut her mouth, unwilling to argue anymore.

Her silence, however, only irritated him further.

He suddenly remembered Wendy leaning against his shoulder earlier, whispering, “I felt bad for you. You already work so hard, and you take care of me and Jasmine on top of everything. And now you have to deal with that woman too. I didn’t want to exhaust you.”

The comparison made his frustration spike.

“Jennie, I don’t ask much from you. Can’t you just make things easier for me? Can’t you show me a little concern?”

Jennie let out a small, incredulous laugh.

“If I’m so terrible, why did you marry me in the first place?”

William froze. His fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

Normally, at this point, no matter who was right or wrong, she would already be apologizing, softening her tone, begging for peace.

But not today.

He didn’t know how to respond.

Jennie’s lips curved in a colder line.

“Was it because my father invested in your failing company?”

William’s voice shot up sharply.

“Jennie, what nonsense are you talking about? Your father invested because he believed in my ability and my potential. Jennie, can you please look at reality?

“If your father had really cared about you back then, things wouldn’t be like this today. You don’t know anything…”

His voice stopped abruptly.

He finally noticed that Jennie had turned her face away at some point. She stared stubbornly out the window as tears slid from the corner of her eye, streaking down her cheek and soaking into her dress, leaving a small, darkened patch.

Seeing her cry, William felt a flicker of guilt.

He loosened his grip on the steering wheel and reached over, a bit stiffly, brushing the tears from her cheek with the back of his hand.

His touch wasn’t gentle.

“Alright. Stop. I won’t say anything else. It’s your birthday. Let’s not ruin it.”

The dry skin of his hand against her wet cheek made Jennie flinch. She turned her head away immediately.

She had been trying so hard to hold her tears back, but his forced tenderness opened something inside her, and the tears only came faster.

Watching her cry harder, William suddenly pulled the wheel sharply and stopped the car on the emergency lane.

“Jennie.” He unbuckled his seat belt and leaned toward her, trying to wipe her tears. “I’ve been exhausted with work lately. The pressure has been insane. Please just listen. Let’s just enjoy your birthday.”

Jennie’s chest hurt with every breath, each pulse of her heartbeat sharp and raw.

It took several deep breaths before she could steady herself. Her voice trembled.

“William, let’s get a divorce.”

“I’m sorry, Miss Lawson. I arrived too late.”Lynn and Bella nearly collapsed on the spot.Lynn instinctively grabbed Bella’s arm. Bella looked dazed, her voice hollow.“Did he just apologise to her?”The hotel manager straightened, his tone respectful and deliberate.“The chairman personally called just now. He said that once you’re ready, the banquet may officially begin.”The room froze.Star Isle Hotel, the most exclusive venue in Ridgeview and a symbol of power and money, actually belonged to Jennie Lawson?“That’s impossible…” William staggered back a step, shaking his head. “No. I don’t believe it!”He snapped, pointing at Jennie like a man unhinged.“She’s unwanted trash. An orphan living off others’ charity. A useless nobody. What kind of ‘heiress’ could she possibly be?”The manager’s face darkened instantly. He didn’t bother responding. With a sharp wave of his hand, security moved in at once.Everyone at Star Isle already knew what their young lady had endured ov

William opened his mouth to argue but the last trace of patience drained from Henry’s eyes.“Get out.”Just one word. Flat. Cold. Laced with menace.William’s body stiffened instinctively. He was about to force out another sentence when Wendy finally sensed the danger. This was bad.Very bad.Henry Jonas looked genuinely dangerous right now.Wendy’s face went pale. She grabbed William’s arm with both hands and dragged him backward, panic breaking through her composure.“William, stop. Don’t say another word.”Henry didn’t spare them a glance. He walked straight toward Jennie.Jennie’s heart jumped. She instinctively tensed, wanting to pull away. She knew how she looked right now—wine-soaked dress, damp hair, blood on her hands. Undignified. Messy. Completely inappropriate for an event hosted by the Jonas family. Was he angry?Did he think she had ruined the evening? Was he about to hold her accountable? She pressed her lips together and hurried to explain. “Mr. Jonas, it w

Now that she thought about it, everything finally made sense. It was never about William Simmons’s talent. The hotel’s general manager had known exactly who she was all along. That Black Card had never been meant for William. It had been issued out of respect for her—for the Lawson family’s daughter. What had once been a courtesy extended on her behalf had now become William’s favorite prop, something he waved around to flaunt his so-called status in front of her.The irony was almost laughable.A faint, mocking smile tugged at Jennie’s lips. She was just about to look away when she felt a gaze settle on her.She turned her head and met a pair of deep, unreadable black eyes.Henry was watching her.Her completely unladylike eye roll just now had not escaped him.For the briefest moment, something like amusement flickered through Henry’s frozen gaze.Right now, Jennie looked like a small wildcat that had finally decided to bare its claws.Lively. Sharp. Real.Far more appeal

Bella’s body went rigid. Her face drained of color. That was Henry Jonas.Standing in front of him, she could barely breathe, let alone respond to a question like that.William, misreading the situation entirely, assumed Henry was simply displeased by someone causing a scene at his event. Eager to show that he knew how to handle things, he immediately stepped forward, putting on a stern, reasonable front.“Didn’t you hear Mr. Jonas?” William snapped at Bella. “Don’t you have any manners? Apologize. Now.”In his mind, as long as he soothed Henry’s mood, this whole mess would amount to nothing more than a minor inconvenience. But the pressure radiating from Henry didn’t ease.If anything, it grew heavier. The storm brewing in those dark eyes was so intense that even Nick, standing nearby, felt a chill crawl up his spine.Oh no.This was bad. This was very bad.His uncle wasn’t annoyed. He was furious.Seeing William still wagging his finger like he owned the place, Nick let o

So that was it.It wasn’t that Jennie had suddenly changed or woken up one day determined to divorce him.It was Wendy.Wendy had taken those documents—marriage certificate, divorce papers, the DNA report—and gone to Jennie herself. The realization hit William hard.He almost turned on the woman beside him, the question already rising to his lips. But he swallowed it back.No.Right now, he and Wendy were tied together. One rose, the other rose. One fell, the other went down with him. Calling her out in public would be nothing short of slapping his own face.Besides, the person truly humiliating him tonight wasn’t Wendy. It was Jennie.William forced down his anger toward Wendy and redirected every ounce of it toward Jennie. He was just about to speak—When a stir rippled through the outer edge of the crowd.“Make way.”Guests instinctively turned, parting to form a narrow path.Nick strode in.The moment he entered the circle, he saw Jennie at the center—surrounded, grip

But after a moment, Lynn steadied herself again. So what if Jennie was connected to the Lawsons?Everyone knew the Lawson family’s assets would eventually go to her cousin. Jennie was nothing more than a discarded daughter. What did it matter if she carried the Lawson name?Still, with the jagged shard of glass pressed against Bella’s face, Lynn didn’t dare move rashly. She drew a slow breath and was just about to step forward to smooth things over when a familiar voice cut in from behind them.“Jennie, are you done yet?”Jennie’s grip on the broken stem didn’t loosen. She simply lifted her gaze, calm and unhurried, toward the source of the voice.William had arrived. And beside him stood Wendy.Even with her makeup perfectly done, the exhaustion and strain around Wendy’s eyes were impossible to hide. The two of them walked forward together, and the crowd instinctively parted to make way.Bella, still on her knees, saw salvation. She tried to move.Instantly, pain flared a
