“Nevillewood!” The bus driver's loud voice called back his attention.

This was his stop- His home!

Stepping out of the bus, the chilly air sent a cold sensation running up his spine. It was not usually cold by this time of the year, maybe something to do with the climate change talk the world has been on about lately.

Andrew exhaled deeply as he stared at the street where he had grown up. His house was just two blocks away, and although nothing had changed about the place. It feels different now.

It was more quiet and reserved. Ten years ago, this place used to be a ghetto, but a lot of families have moved out now, to better places he presumed- better lives.

That was the dream he had for his family, he was the only son and therefore their last hope, he couldn't afford to fail or disappoint.

With his luggage in hands, Andrew strolled down to his mother's house. A smile parted his lips as he saw her in front of the house spreading corn seeds outside.

Right there and then, he could tell that they were either having grits tonight or cornbread tomorrow, and he loved both.

“Drew?” the woman had slowly raised her head, squinting her eyes to see through the distance.

“Mom!” Andrew replied in excitement, abandoning one of his bag on the drive-in as he opened his arm for a hug.

The excited Ms. McCarthy rushed to welcome her child, she might be getting old but her eye sight and legs were still strong.

“My boy, you are back!” She exclaimed, surprise etched all over her face as she gave him that big welcome hug.

“Yes mother. I told you we had graduated last week over the phone.” Andrew said.

“Yes you did, but I also recollect you said you wouldn't be coming home till weekend.” She retorted with a frown.

Andrew laughed softly. “Really? I guess I misspoke.” He lied.

The truth was that he had chosen to come back early to ruin whatever plans they had made to welcome him. His family was poor, he didn't need them wasting money to throw him a welcome party. It was not like he got a degree in law or medicine, not even engineering, it wasn't worth the hassle of a welcome party.

“It's alright my child, welcome home. We are sorry that we couldn't afford to attend your graduation ceremony, we should have been there for you.” She said, sadness creeping in on the moment.

“Oh mother, you should not bother yourself over such little things, you shouldn't have to explain yourself to me, I perfectly understand. By the way, where is Claudia?” He asked with a consoling smile, smartly trying to change the topic.

This woman has done her best for him, he didn't want her feeling bad about not doing enough.

“Oh, your sister must be up in her room. Let me help you carry in your bags,” she offered.

Andrew was going to turn down her offer but seeing the excitement she felt in the moment, he let her take them.

Quickly he dashed up the stairs, walking on his toes as he got upstairs. He wanted to sneak up on his sister Claudia.

Claudia was his older sister, she was twenty-eight years old but they share a very close relationship regardless of the age gap between them.

They had both lost their father as children, and although their mother had gotten a few boyfriends along the years, they pretty much grew up with her as their only parent.

Getting to her bedroom door, he increased the stealthiness in his movement, gently pushing the door open without making the creaking sound, his face was full of smiles, he couldn't wait to see the shock on her face when she sees him.

“Haha, I walked from the bus stop.” He chuckled.

Just then their attention was drawn to the footsteps at the top of the stairs, they both looked up and once again, Andrew's body began shivering.
