The first headline appeared before breakfast.

Marielle almost missed it.

She had been standing barefoot in the kitchen, trying to convince pancake batter to behave while Theo sat at the island arguing that chocolate chips counted as an essential ingredient. Odette was pretending to agree with him simply because it amused her to watch Marielle lose an argument to a six-year-old before eight o'clock.

"You've spoiled him," Marielle said.

"I've encouraged creativity," Odette corrected.

"He asked fo

Marielle had always believed Grayson looked most uncomfortable when circumstances refused to obey him, but watching him remain on one knee while she deliberately withheld her answer revealed a level of vulnerability she had rarely been allowed to enjoy. His expression remained controlled enough that anyone who did not know him might have mistaken his patience for confidence, yet Marielle recognised the slight tension around his mouth and the way his fingers had tightened around the ring box while he waited for her to end what was rapidly becoming the longest minute of his life.“You do understand that people normally answer after a proposal,” Grayson said when her silence continued long enough to offend him personally.Marielle brushed another tear from her cheek and looked at the ring again. “I am considering the terms.”“There are no terms, which was a substantial part of the speech you have apparently decided to punish me for making.”“That makes the decision more complicated becau

Grayson spent the following morning discovering that proposing to a woman who was already his wife created several problems traditional advice did not cover, especially when that woman lived in the same house, knew his schedule better than his assistant and had developed an irritating ability to recognise when he was hiding something. By breakfast, Marielle had already asked twice why he kept checking his phone, once why he had moved a meeting he usually refused to reschedule, and once whether his unusual patience with Theo’s decision to pour too much syrup over his pancakes meant he was distracted by something expensive. He denied everything with enough confidence to make Theo suspicious.“Dad is doing the face,” Theo announced while Marielle packed his lunch.Grayson looked across the table. “What face?”“The one when you know something and don't want to tell us yet, because you did it when you bought Mommy that bracelet and when you knew the judge said, 'I could come home.'"Mariel

The lawyer looked from Grayson to Marielle and then down at the contract between them with the careful expression of a man who had learned never to assume that married couples understood the legal consequences of decisions they had already made emotionally. They were sitting in the smaller conference room at Grayson’s attorney’s office, where Marielle had expected a ten-minute appointment and discovered instead that ending a private marriage agreement required considerably more paperwork than beginning one had seemed to require.Grayson had brought the original contract exactly as promised, along with the signed copies his lawyer requested and enough identification to satisfy a process Marielle considered unnecessarily suspicious for two people who were voluntarily terminating an agreement they had voluntarily signed. She had spent most of the first fifteen minutes listening while the lawyer explained that terminating the private agreement would not dissolve their marriage, affect the

Marielle woke the next morning with Grayson’s question still sitting exactly where he had left it, although the man responsible was already downstairs pretending that preparing breakfast required enough concentration to excuse him from looking at her. She stood in the kitchen doorway for several seconds and watched him cut strawberries beside Theo, who had apparently been assigned responsibility for pancakes and was producing shapes that bore very little resemblance to circles.Grayson noticed her before Theo did, and the brief look that passed between them confirmed that he remembered every word from the previous night. He did not ask for her answer, which Marielle appreciated more than she expected, because anything important enough to change their marriage deserved better than being discussed while Theo argued that one badly shaped pancake looked exactly like a shark.“Mommy, tell Dad this is a shark,” Theo demanded as he lifted the pancake with a spatula and displayed a shape that

For the next four days, neither Grayson nor Marielle mentioned the contract again, although its approaching termination date seemed to follow them through every ordinary part of their lives. The document remained inside Grayson’s locked desk rather than on the bedside table, yet Marielle thought about it while packing Theo’s lunch, while answering messages about her father’s restitution process, and even while listening to Grayson complain that somebody had moved the charger he had left in the living room. Nothing about their routine suggested a marriage preparing to end, which somehow made the unanswered question more difficult rather than less.Grayson behaved normally too, although Marielle had learned enough about him to recognize when normal behavior required effort. He attended governance meetings, reviewed the final terms surrounding his possible return to Cole Maritime and came home early enough to supervise Theo’s homework, but every so often she caught him watching her with

Marielle stared at the contract in Grayson’s hand long enough for him to lower it slightly, as though the pages had become more dangerous now than they had been on the night they signed them. She remembered that night with uncomfortable clarity, including the lawyers, the careful explanations, and the determination on both sides to make certain that neither of them could mistake necessity for affection. At the time, every clause had felt important because rules were easier to trust than another person, yet the document now looked strangely inadequate beside everything their marriage had become.“You actually kept the original in the house after everything that happened with the company records,” she said, reaching for it with an expression that made Grayson suspect he was about to be personally blamed for the existence of contract law.“I considered putting it in secure storage, but given our recent history with archives, missing boxes, encrypted drives and people stealing documents,
