Chapter 14

مؤلف: Bright Lights
October 18, 2008.

The day we got married was also the day Julian died.

A small photo was attached to the headstone. He was wearing a white shirt, smiling softly. It was the same photo I had seen in the attic.

But after more than ten years of sun and rain, the colors had almost completely faded. Even the outline of his smile had grown blurry.

I placed the white flowers in my arms in front of the headstone. Then I crouched down and gently wiped the dust from his photo.

"Julian, I'm here." The

On screen, Julian fixed his hair several times before looking into the camera. He said, "The wedding is in two days. Vera's a little nervous. Truth is, so am I. I haven't slept well in two days."He smiled, his face filled with the confidence and excitement of a young man. "But it's okay. Starting the day after tomorrow, Vera will officially be my wife."I sat in front of the TV and watched those videos over and over again, from night till dawn. The morning light slipped through the gap in the curtains and fell on the discs on the coffee table, reflecting a small patch of rainbow-colored light.I reached out to touch the light, my fingers passing through the beam before landing on the disc labeled "Reunion".I suddenly understood the meaning behind the bride's words at the end of the wedding video."If you're watching this DVD, it means he found you."Indeed, he had found me. He had crossed the line between life and death, reaching across more than ten years.Through a cheap, o

"Second, don't hold onto me for too long. Your biggest flaw is that you can't let go of the past," Julian said. "You can use the same old backpack for seven or eight years, but you can't do that with me."When it's time to let go, let go. Move on. Find someone who will treat you well and live a good life."At this point, his voice had started to tremble."Third…" He stopped, then smiled. Tears finally rolled down from the corners of his eyes. "Forget it. Maybe I shouldn't say the third one after all. If I do, you'll cry again, and I can't bear that."He moved closer to the camera and pressed a finger against the lens, just like how he used to tap my forehead whenever we said goodbye. He would always say, "Wait for me to come back.""Vera, meeting you in this life has been the greatest blessing I've ever had," the Julian in the video said. "If there is another life, I'll still come find you. When that day comes, don't forget who I am.The screen went dark. This time, it never cam

The camera slowly pushed in, and the person's silhouette became clearer. It was a man in a white shirt, sitting in an old wooden chair. Most of his face was hidden in shadow. Only his chin and the corner of his mouth could be seen.He seemed to be smiling. The slight curve of his lips was gentle and familiar.A woman's voice came from behind the camera. She sounded very young. "Are you ready? I'm starting the recording."The man nodded. The young woman said, "Then introduce yourself."The man smiled and raised a hand to block the camera. He said, "Vera, stop messing around."I froze on the couch, completely stunned. That voice. It was the same voice I had heard on the phone call from the number made up of all zeros.Just then, the man on the screen slowly lowered his hand. His face emerged from the shadows little by little. His brows, eyes, nose, and lips came into view.Every feature was so clear that it left me shaken. When he smiled at the camera, his eyes were shining.

The moment I said those words, tears fell.I stayed there for a long time, crying as I told him everything I had wanted to say over the past decade.I told him I was doing well—that I had a steady job and was healthy.I said I remembered everything; all my memories had come back.I apologized to him for making him wait so long, and I thanked him for protecting me that day."You said that when we grew old, we would watch those videos together and remember how beautiful I was when I was young."

I hugged Julian's mother and buried my face in her shoulder. The tears came again before I could stop them. She smelled familiar, like old-fashioned mothballs mixed with cotton that had been dried in the sun.The smell brought back another memory. On the night of my wedding rehearsal, she hugged me just like this and said, "From now on, I'll love you like you're my daughter."I also remembered her name—Bertha Rosewood."How could I blame you?" I replied, holding her close. "I should be thanking you. Thank you for never giving up on me.We stood by the entrance for a long time, until the sky went dark and the streetlights came on one by one.I invited Bertha inside and poured her a cup of water. She sat on the couch and took out the DVDs one by one, lining them up neatly on the coffee table. There were seven in total."Julian had loved filming things ever since he was a child." Bertha ran her hand over the DVDs, her eyes filled with warmth. "When you two were together, he wanted

It took a long time before I finally calmed down. It had gotten dark outside.Mom sat beside me, with her eyes swollen from crying. The two of us sat in the dust in silence. In the end, I was the first to speak. My voice was so hoarse that I barely recognized it. "Mom, what was with that DVD? Who sent it to me?"Mom shook her head. "I have no idea. We got rid of everything related to Julian back then. The recordings, the photos, and even every video from your wedding day. None of it should still exist.""But they do," I said. "Someone kept them and mailed the DVD to me."I looked at the rosewood chest on the floor. In those photos, I was smiling so brightly, completely unaware of what fate had in store for me just a few hours later.A thought suddenly occurred to me. Perhaps those old keepsakes had never really disappeared.Maybe they had just been hidden away, waiting for the right time to show up."I want to see him," I said.Mom froze. "What did you say?""I said I want to
