Chapter 4

Author: Walnut Bread
The musty air of the basement, mixed with the stench of my own bloodied back, was stifling. I had no idea how long I had been out when the iron door was blown off its hinges.

I could barely open my eyes. I thought Vincent had finally sent someone to finish me off.

However, the people who stormed in were not his men. They were fierce men from a rival mafia gang, Black Thorne.

They were furious that their last attack, which killed my mom, had not gotten Vincent's attention. They knew he thought it was a hoax.

This time, they did not just grab me; they took Jenny too.

There I was, back in the ruins. Jenny and I were tied up on opposite sides of a pile of explosives, ten yards apart.

The leader of the Black Thorne made a video call to Vincent.

"Don Porter, it's been a while. Both your women are here. Give up your turf, or pick one to save. The one you leave will go down with these ruins."

Vincent showed up with his crew, his expression stormy.

Before he could say a word, Jenny started screaming. "Vincent, save me! They're so scary! Hurry, save me! Alice planned all this. She wants me dead! She's jealous, so she teamed up with outsiders to mess with you!"

Vincent turned to me. I was a mess of bruises and cuts. I had my head down, too weak to speak up.

However, my silence, after Jenny's accusations, looked like guilt to him.

"Alice."

His voice was full of disappointment as he spoke through clenched teeth. "Why couldn't you just be smart about this? You teamed up with enemies to force my hand? You've gone too far. Do you think this will make me give in?"

He took a deep breath, ready to make his last stand. "If you're so set on putting on a show, then go all the way!"

The countdown was down to its final minute.

Vincent sprinted to Jenny, untied her, scooped her up, and then raced for the door. He slowed down just a bit as he passed me.

His eyes were a storm of emotions. He was angry like he had been let down by someone he had once believed in.

"Alice, cut the act. If you don't come back and say you're sorry tonight, don't bother coming back at all."

I tried to lift my head to look at the man I had loved for so long. My throat was tight, and I could not speak. All I could do was shake my head, feeling utterly hopeless.

There was no going back now.

I watched him carry Jenny away, my heart sinking. My eyes went from full of despair to cold and empty. I did not fight or cry for help. I just watched the timer hit zero, like the end of some crazy play.

Vincent, with Jenny in his arms, got to a safe distance. However, he could not shake off the determined look in my eyes. My gaze had been lifeless. A wave of fear hit him, and he slowed down.

Just then, a motorcycle roared onto the scene.

Vincent's right-hand man, an intelligence officer, crashed at his feet. He was all bloodied and battered. He was holding up a secret report.

"Don Porter! This isn't a game! The report's in! The DNA from the ruins... It's really Ms. Hoffman's mother… She was killed in the explosion three days ago! Ms. Hoffman has been telling the truth all along! Her kidnappers... They're really going to kill her!"

A second later, a loud explosion blasted from behind Vincent.

Vincent tried to refuse to eat. He even tried to end his life by biting his tongue when he first got there. I had the doctors feed him through a tube and watch him around the clock. They tied him down and put a soft cork in his mouth."Want to die? It won't be that easy," I said, watching him struggle from outside his ward. "You're going to live and use every second to make up for what you've done."Every day, I made sure someone read him the newspaper, morning and night. He heard about how I was taking over business and gangs, how I was the star of fancy parties, and how I was admired by everyone.I wanted him to see how bright I shone without him."Queen dazzled at tonight's charity dinner in her custom-made gown, dancing with the mayor," the caregiver read emotionlessly.Vincent's tears fell silently, and he sobbed quietly. Vincent, once strong and in control, was lying helpless with high-level paralysis, unable to manage even his most basic needs. He, who used to fuss over ev

Jenny tried to get away, but Vincent held her still. "You'll be part of this new building, strong and lasting."Jenny found herself in the soft cement. The cement was like thick mud. However, I did not say a word."Disgusting."That was all I said.I walked away, leaving him alone with his tears.…The next day, my lawyers went to Vincent's company. Vincent did not try to stop them. He signed the papers they brought. He gave up the company he worked so hard for. Just like that, it was mine.[Alice, I need to see you one last time.]That was the message he sent. Vincent lay there, badly hurt.Jenny, who had seemed so gentle before, suddenly looked fierce. She kicked Vincent aside and whipped out a gun. Her moves were quick, her eyes dark and dangerous. She aimed the gun right at my head."What fools." Jenny laughed so hard that she started to cry. "After playing this game for so long, I'm exhausted."She ripped away her fake sweet facade to show a scary snarl. "I'm the secret daughter of the leader of Black Thorne, Raymond Thorne. Vincent, you wiped out my family five years ago and killed my dad. Did you think I'd forget?"Vincent stared at her as his hand bled, his face full of disbelief. "Jenny... You...""Be quiet!" Jenny's eyes burned with anger. "I was going to just end you, but then I saw that you had fallen for a regular woman."She poked my head with the gun. "Alice is your soft spot, the part of you that's still human. Killing you would be too easy. I knew I had to crush your spirit! I planned the kidnapping of Alice's mom. I ma

The following week, Vincent's places got hit one by one—casinos, docks, weapon stores. I knew the gang well and hit him where it hurt most. He was running himself ragged. However, Vincent had given a strict order. No one could fight back. No one could touch me, not even a hair.He took my revenge quietly, like he was asking for punishment, hoping I would forgive him.Jenny was freaking out. She knew she was done for if I was around, so she went behind the scenes and got in touch with what was left of the Black Thorne. She was trying to set up another hit.I had been keeping an eye on Jenny's messages for quite some time. I was ready to turn her own plan against her.I let slip where I was going on purpose, just to catch Jenny.…In the old, empty factory, Jenny showed up with more than ten hitmen. They trapped me right in the middle."Alice, you're so lucky. Not even a bomb could take you out," she said. She was waving a gun around, looking way too pleased with herself."This

It was Felix Lewis. He was my father's most trusted Consigliere until his last breath. After Vincent seized control and got rid of the old guard, Felix vanished with the final secret weapon my father had left behind.Felix crouched down, ignoring the muck. With shaking hands, he lifted me from the sludge."Ms. Hoffman, I'm so sorry I'm late! Just give the word, and I, along with three thousand fighters, will be the sword of your vengeance."…A year passed.Vincent was a changed man. He turned cruel, dark, and unpredictable. He preserved my room and sat there alone every day, speaking to thin air. He was a shell of a man.Meanwhile, a mysterious group known as Nemesis quickly rose to power. He shoved past the bodyguards who tried to hold him back and ran into the rubble."Alice! Alice!"He dug through the burning ashes with his hands. His hands turned black from the burns, with pebbles sticking to his skin, but he did not even feel the pain. He kept whispering my name.Jenny stood back at a safe distance, watching Vincent's wild actions. She was scared. She tried to go to him. "Honey, stop digging.
