SUSAN

I heard the front door close.

Nonso's footsteps faded down the hall, into the elevator, gone. And I lay there on that couch with my eyes shut and my heart slamming, counting to twenty before I let myself breathe.

He knew.

Noah knew about the calls.

I sat up slowly. Ran both hands through my hair. Tried to arrange my face into something that looked like someone who'd just woken up.

Noah came around the corner.

He stopped when he saw me.

"You're up."

"Mm." I stretched my arms over my head.

  • ON MY WEDDING NIGHT    Seventeen: The Blood Oath

SUSAN I didn't sleep.I lay there with Noah's arm around my waist and his breath warm against the back of my neck and my phone clutched in my hand under the pillow. The message sat there. Burned into my brain. Four words I couldn't unsee.Ask him about the blood oath.I'd heard that phrase before. Twice. Once from Nonso, sitting in our kitchen, talking about Joana. Once from Joana herself, in the text she'd sent after I typed her name.Wrong.But I'd never asked Noah what it meant. I'd never pushed. I'd told myself it didn't matter — that whatever happened between him and Joana was in the past, and the past was none of my business.I was wrong. It was my business now.At 5:30, Noah's alarm went off. He reached over and killed it without opening his eyes. Then his arm tightened around me and he pulled me closer."You're awake," he mumbled."Mm.""You didn't sleep.""I slept a little.""You're a terrible liar."I felt him smile against my shoulder. Then he kissed it. Then he shifted, r

  • ON MY WEDDING NIGHT    Sixteen: Where Did You Get It

SUSAN Noah didn't move.He stood in the middle of the living room with his arms at his sides and his eyes on me. Not angry. Not yet. Just waiting. That quiet, patient look he got when he already knew the answer and was giving me a chance to say it myself."Where did you get it?""I told you. Nonso brought it.""That's not what I asked."I looked at the photograph on the table. My father. Young. Smiling. Standing next to a man who'd been watching us for weeks."It's just a photo, Noah.""It's not just a photo." He took a step closer. "You went pale at Rachel's. You barely spoke the whole way home. And now Nonso shows up with the same picture and you look like you've seen a ghost.""I'm tired.""Stop saying that."His voice wasn't loud. It never was. That was the thing about Noah — he didn't need to yell to make you feel it. He just went quiet and steady and looked at you like he was reading every thought you'd ever had."You've been hiding something since the wedding," he said. "I've

  • ON MY WEDDING NIGHT    Fifteen: The Driveway

SUSAN Nonso walked toward the car.Slow. Deliberate. Hands at his sides where we could see them. The kind of approach you use when you don't want to spook someone. He'd done this before. I'd done it before too.Noah didn't move."Stay in the car," he said."Noah—""Stay."He opened his door and stepped out. I watched him through the windshield — all six-eight of him, shoulders squared, hands loose. Ready.Nonso stopped a few feet away."Mr. Reed.""Nonso." Noah's voice was flat. "It's late.""I know. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't important.""Then call me in the morning.""I can't."They stood there. Two men, almost the same height, facing each other under the streetlight. Neither moved. Neither blinked.I got out of the car.Noah heard the door and turned. "Susan—""It's fine." I walked around the hood and stopped beside him. Close enough that our shoulders touched. "What do you need, Nonso?"He looked at me.That's the thing I noticed. He didn't look at Noah when I spoke. He look

  • ON MY WEDDING NIGHT    Fourteen: The Drive Home

SUSAN We didn't talk in the car.Noah drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting on my knee, thumb tracing small circles against the fabric of my dress. It was a habit of his — something he did without thinking, something that usually made me feel grounded. Safe. Held.Tonight it just felt like pressure. The photo was in my pocket.I could feel it against my thigh. A small square of paper, older than me, folded twice like someone had carried it for years. My father's face was in there. Young. Smiling. Standing next to a man I'd spent three weeks hunting.I kept my eyes on the window and watched the city slide past. You're quiet.I heard the words before he said them. I knew they were coming. I'd known since the moment I stepped out of that nursery with my hands shaking and my pulse in my throat. Noah had been watching me all night. He'd noticed the moment I went pale. He'd noticed when I pulled my hand out of his. He'd noticed when I said I wanted to go home.He always no

  • ON MY WEDDING NIGHT    Thirteen: Take Her Away

SUSAN The door swung open."What's taking you so long?" Noah filled the doorway, shoulder against the frame, arms crossed. "I've been waiting for hours."Rachel hissed. "Hours, my ass. It's been fifteen minutes.""Fifteen minutes is hours when you're standing in a hallway full of relatives asking me when we're having kids.""Then maybe you should have some.""We're working on it.""Noah.""What? You brought it up."Rachel rolled her eyes so hard I thought they'd stick. "Here she is. Take her away. You're not the only one who's married."Noah crossed the room in four steps and took my hand.I felt his fingers lace through mine. Warm. Easy. Familiar. He didn't notice that my palm was damp. He didn't notice that I was holding on too tight, that my knuckles had gone white around the photo still pressed between my thigh and my dress, that I hadn't blinked in thirty seconds."Come on," he said. "Mom's asking about the seating.""She's always asking about the seating.""Because you always si

  • ON MY WEDDING NIGHT    Twelve: The File

SUSAN Rachel flipped the switch and the room exploded with light.I threw a hand up over my eyes. "Jesus, Rachel.""Sorry." She laughed, already moving past me. "Noah's always saying I overdo it. He's not wrong."The brightness settled. I blinked twice and looked around. It wasn't a nursery. Not yet, anyway. The crib was there, pushed against the far wall, still wrapped in plastic. The changing table was in pieces on the floor. The walls were painted a soft gray, but the shelves were empty and the closet door hung open with nothing inside but hangers.Rachel caught me looking."It's not done," she said. "I keep telling everyone it's not done. My mother-in-law keeps asking when I'm going to finish it like I'm building a house." She rolled her eyes. "It's a baby. He's not going to care if the shelves are empty.""It looks beautiful.""It looks like a storage unit." She crossed to the window and pulled the curtains open. "But that's not what I wanted to show you."She pointed at the floo
