Chapter 2

Autor: Hazel Lake
Hal and Maddie finally came back half an hour later, laughing and joking around.

“Here you go, True. I got bored waiting for Shorty, so I got some fruit at the dining cart.”

I dropped my gaze. It was a container of pre-cut watermelon.

Maddie’s favorite.

Watermelon never agreed with me.

When I didn’t reach for the fruit, Hal practically shoved the container into my hands.

“Come on. Dig in. Then get some sleep up top.”

Hal nudged me toward the upper bunk.

Maddie settled herself on the lower bunk belonging to me and beckoned Hal over.

“Hurry up and log on. We’ll be going through a tunnel soon, and the signal’s going to drop. We won’t be able to play once we’re in there.”

I watched the pair sit across from each other with their phones held up to their faces.

Disappointment washed over me.

“I said I’m not switching.

“If you’re that concerned about Maddie getting to the top bunk, you can always trade yours with hers.”

I didn’t raise my voice.

However, the message got out loud and clear. The pair put down their phones and turned their attention to me.

“Don’t be mad, True.”

Maddie peered at Hal before uttering, with a forced smile, “Hal’s six-foot-three. The top bunk would be so uncomfortable for him. I’ll take the top.”

Even so, Maddie didn’t so much as budge.

If anything, Hal felt more sorry for her.

“Stay where you are, Maddie.”

Hal looked at me with a frown.

“True, Maddie is unwell, so it will be a struggle for her to get up and down. I’m too tall. I can’t even straighten my back up there. You’re the only one who fits comfortably in the upper bunk.

“Be reasonable for once and get up already.

“You’re just ruining the mood for everyone.”

This had been Hal’s go-to excuse.

On our rafting trip, he’d claimed Maddie’s white outfit would get dirty, so he’d handed me the grimy life jacket instead.

When we took the subway, he’d said Maddie was too short to hold on to the overhead straps comfortably, so the only available seat had been reserved for her.

Each time, I had to put up with the unfairness.

With that in mind, my eyes stung, and my voice was louder than before.

“I’m not switching.”

I walked up to Maddie to pull her up.

Before I could even reach for her, Hal pushed me off my feet, and I hit the ground hard.

“True!”

A flicker of regret crossed Hal’s eyes.

Just as he was about to help me up, the train conductor approached.

“What’s going on here?

“I could hear all your shouting from halfway down the carriage.”

Hal shot me a warning look, then smiled embarrassedly at the conductor.

“My girlfriend missed out on the bottom bunk, so she was pouting to me about the top bunk.”

Maddie jumped to her feet and chimed in.

“Fine, True. You can have my bottom bunk. Now, get up from the floor.”

Clearly, this wasn’t the conductor’s first rodeo.

Not blaming me one bit, he smiled helplessly.

“It’s not a big issue. Get up off the floor, young lady. I’ll help you check if there are available tickets for bottom bunks.”

Despite the conductor’s gentle tone, my cheeks burned with embarrassment.

Overwhelmed with emotions, I jabbed my finger at Maddie and shouted, “She stole my bunk at the bottom!”

Hal grimaced hard.

“What are you talking about, True?

“You’ve been sulking since breakfast. I figured we were finally getting a chance to enjoy a trip together, so I let it go. I guess you just won’t drop it, will you?”

I looked at Hal.

My chest ached so badly I could barely breathe.

So he’d noticed I was upset from the very beginning.

Yet, he made no effort to do anything about it. Instead, he’d spent the whole morning flirting with Maddie right in front of my face.

For a moment, the hurt nearly broke me.

I rose and handed my ticket to the conductor.

“Why don’t you check my ticket and see who’s lying?”

Unable to shake their concern, Cassandra and Rowan insisted on tagging along. Spotting me, Hal looked like a lost stray that had just found its home. His eyes sparkled, and he bolted toward me. “True…” Halfway there, Hal saw Rowan behind me, and his posture stiffened into hostility. “Who is he?” “A friend.” What a strange thing to say, considering it had only been two nights since the incident. As I stood before Hal once more, all the love and hatred, all the resentment and grudges I’d held against him, seemed to wither away.“Here’s a portable charger. I brought you 1,000 bucks in cash as well.” I handed the power bank and money to Hal. Not taking the things, he simply stared at me with a pained expression. “What’s the meaning of this, True?” “Exactly what it looks like, Hal. We’ve broken up. The only reason I showed up here was out of courtesy for the years we’d spent together.” Hal looked hurt. “I never agreed to it…” “It’s not like we’re getting a div

Hal stared at the disconnected call, his mind going blank. His finger pressed redial. The call dropped right away. It was clear that True had blocked him. With shaking hands, Hal desperately sent a message through WhatsApp. “Why didn’t you tell me that you got off the train, True? “What I said yesterday was out of anger. After getting the suitcases, I stayed in the aisle keeping an eye on you until those guys left. I only went to Maddie’s carriage once you said you didn’t need me there.” The first text went through without an issue. A red exclamation mark appeared beside his second message. True had blocked him on WhatsApp as well. Hal stood motionlessly, his face pale. Maddie got her things ready to exit the train. She asked with concern, “What’s wrong, Hal?” “Is True still mad at you? Is that why she won’t tell you which car she’s in?” Hal didn’t answer. Maddie carried on in her sweet, passive-aggressive tone. “Come on, don’t be upset. You know True can

By the time we left the hot-air balloon festival, it was already afternoon.Grateful for how kind Cassandra and Rowan were to me, I offered to take them out for lunch. When we got to a nearby restaurant, I learned that Cassandra couldn’t handle strong flavors. Without even thinking, I almost suggested we go somewhere else. However, Rowan stopped me. “Since the bold flavors don’t agree with her, she can always order something else. You can order whatever you want.” For a moment, my ears rang. Before, each time we went out to eat as a group, Maddie basically had a say in what we could order because she couldn’t handle a bit of heat. As it turned out, the same problem could have a different solution all along. During lunch, Cassandra and Rowan made sure I was part of every conversation. Even when they started discussing a video game I knew nothing about, they would try their best to give me the layman’s terms to keep me in the loop. It was nothing like dining with Hal

The younger sibling, Cassandra, was chatty. Before getting into the car, Cassandra asked whether I wanted to sit in the front or back. I chose the front. The siblings shared a conversation in the back, making it a point to include me every now and then. By the time the hour-long car ride was over, the awkwardness had mostly worn off. The three of us began exploring the festival together. When we reached the field where the hot-air balloons were gathered, I was so excited that I snapped several pictures in a row.I whipped out my phone and sent the photos to the chat where no reply would ever come. “Dad, I finally came to see the hot-air balloons you told me about. “They’re so much prettier than I imagined.” I stared at the smiling man in his profile picture until my vision grew blurry. Dad had spent part of his youth working in New Mexico. Whenever he called me, he’d talk about the beautiful balloons he’d seen there. He always promised that when he had some free time

During those seconds when the line went radio silent, a lot went through my head. I met Hal for the first time at a kindergarten around our neighborhood. My eyes were drawn right away to his neat, charming appearance. Shy as I was, I couldn’t bring myself to say hello to him. However, he brushed past all the other girls and made a beeline to me. He said, “Miss, I want to sit with her.” For thirteen years, Hal and I sat side by side. It was from preschool to elementary, and middle school to high school. We even applied for the same college on the same campus. My mind then went back to the day Hal told me how he felt. It happened at night. It had started as a joke. I'd sent him a silly meme teasing him about asking me out.Instead of playing along, he crossed half the city to buy me flowers and gifts, then showed up outside my house. According to him, it was only right to meet in person to confess his feelings. That was the only way to show respect for what we h

Once at the hotel, I unzipped my luggage to unpack. That was when my phone rang. It was the ringtone I had set for Maddie. I took a couple of seconds to myself before taking the call. “Hello, Maddie…” “True, why didn’t you tell us that you swapped bunks?” Maddie’s whiny tone came through on the call. I was taken aback. Before I could tell her that I had gotten off the train, Maddie’s voice rang through again. “Hal and I lost a card game to passengers in our car. As a dare, I had to upload that photo. I was worried you might be upset by the photo, so Hal came with me to clear things up. Imagine our shock when we found a stranger sleeping in your bunk.” Her tone was laced with a hint of hurt. “It was dark in the carriage. I thought you were lying there and wanted to mess with you, but I got yelled at instead.” I remained silent as Maddie shoved her accusations down my throat. For the first time, I looked at Maddie without the blind trust that friendship had always p
