Chapter 4

Autor: Ferrycraft
Declan's POV

Jasper looked a little uncomfortable. "Declan, are you upset about the demotion? Promotions and demotions are the boss' call. There's nothing I can do about her decisions."

My expression didn't change. "I'm not upset. Ms. Sheffield's staffing decisions have nothing to do with someone at my level."

Jasper's face went pale at my flat tone. "You say you're not upset, but you won't even take the coffee. That's obviously you being angry."

The coworkers nearby saw how hurt Jasper looked and jumped in to defend him.

"Are you seriously jealous that Jasper got promoted, Declan?"

"After the meeting, he bought coffee for the whole team. That cup was the one he set aside just for you, and you can't even be grateful."

"Jasper, honestly, just forget about him. He clearly wasn't cut out for the position. Why else would Ms. Sheffield have blocked his promotion for three years?"

"And that whole thing three years ago when he was throwing himself at Ms. Sheffield? She probably couldn't stand him even back then, and he still hung around at the company for another three years anyway."

The scorn hit me from every direction. I took a deep breath to steady myself.

"I didn't take the coffee because I'm allergic to caffeine. And not once, from start to finish, did I say a single word about being unhappy with your promotion."

Jasper's hand froze in midair, still holding the cup. "I'm sorry, Declan. I didn't know you were allergic."

The coworkers saw the embarrassment on Jasper's face and turned on me even harder.

"What's with that attitude, Declan? You couldn't just say you're allergic like a normal person?"

"And for all we know, you are jealous of Jasper—jealous that Ms. Sheffield favors him and that she's buying wedding rings for him."

I couldn't hold it back anymore. I held up my hand and showed them the plain band on my finger. "Lana's my girlfriend. Why would I be jealous of him?"

The room went dead silent for a second. Then someone laughed.

"He actually thinks he's Ms. Sheffield's boyfriend?"

"This is borderline harassment at this point. Did he buy himself a ring and everything?"

I turned around, furious, ready to find Lana and make her tell them the truth. But she was already stepping out of her office.

I looked her straight in the eyes. "Lana, you tell them. What are we to each other?"

She was quiet for a moment.

The coworkers nearby started whispering. "She's not denying it. Is Declan actually her boyfriend?"

"Then what was all that with Jasper?"

Hearing those whispers, Lana's expression hardened, and her voice went cold. "What are we to each other? We're superior and subordinate. That's it.

"Declan Monroe, you're spreading false claims about a superior and refusing to respect your team lead's authority. That's a seven-day suspension, effective immediately."

At the sight of the icy look on her face, whatever was left inside my chest went completely cold.

I forced the corners of my mouth up, pulled the ring off my finger, and said, "Lana, we're done."

Her fingers twitched, but she held herself back and didn't come after me.

The coworkers heard what I said, and their contempt only deepened. "The boss literally denied it to his face, and he's still going with 'we're done'?"

A few of them mimicked my expression, sneering. "If she were actually dating anyone, it'd be someone like Jasper. The second Jasper gets treated unfairly, Ms. Sheffield steps in to protect him."

"Next time you want to be someone's little lapdog, Declan, pick someone in your league."

They all burst out laughing.

I didn't respond to any of it. I just packed up my things in silence.

Seven days wasn't going to be long enough. We were never going to see each other again.

Third-Person POV

Lana watched from the upper floor as Declan walked out of the building. She typed out a text to explain, deleted it, typed it again, and deleted it yet again. By the time the workday ended, she still hadn't sent it.

When she got home and found that Declan wasn't there, she frowned and tried to message him, only to realize he'd blocked her.

When Jasper found out, he looked a little hurt. "Is Declan mad about what happened today? But you already announced the engagement. Did he really have to be so aggressive about it?"

Lana frowned, remembering the look on Declan's face as he left her office. An unsettling feeling flickered through her, but she forced it down.

"He's throwing a tantrum over the demotion. When he comes back, I'll give him the promotion."

But seven days passed, and Declan never showed up.

Lana told Phil to reach out to Declan. Hearing that, he said, "Promote Declan Monroe? But he's already resigned."

Declan's POVI told my mom that Lana and I had broken up and asked her not to take Lana's calls or share anything about how I was doing. She didn't ask me why. She just never told Lana another thing about me.That lasted until a year later, when I got engaged. Mom was so excited that she posted about it online and forgot to restrict who could see it, so Lana still managed to see the post. Her call came almost immediately. Her voice was heavy. "Declan, you're getting married?""Yeah."Lana was quiet for a few seconds. "Can you really not give me one more chance? Everything you said before, I'll change all of it. We won't have to hide anymore."Declan, I don't want to lose you."I listened to the regret in her voice and felt nothing. When I'd been with Lana, she was the cold, untouchable CEO at work and my girlfriend behind closed doors. Other than refusing to go public, everything had felt fine.A lot of friends even told me she had her reasons for keeping it quiet. She was a C

Third-Person POVAfter Lana went home, she was a mess for the rest of the day. Declan's words kept replaying in her head. She opened the company group chat she hadn't looked at in a long time and scrolled back to the messages from that night. The further she read, the less she could sleep. She finally understood what he'd been going through all those years.Because she refused to go public and insisted on keeping her distance, the employees had felt free to tear Declan apart in the chat. They found a hundred different ways to call him a lapdog. Every little thing he did got picked apart and mocked in the group.By the time Lana finished reading, a vein was throbbing at her temple. The next morning, she went straight to HR and asked Phil, "Was Declan being targeted by a lot of people when he was still here?"Phil didn't give her a yes or no. He just said, "Once the other employees noticed how distant you were with Declan, none of them wanted to get on the boss' bad side, so the

Declan's POVLooking at the guilt on Lana's face, I didn't hold back. "So you think because you didn't technically do anything, that means you did nothing wrong?"Lana, when I passed out, you didn't even look at me. When I was stranded alone at 1:00 am, you drove someone else home. And you think that's fine?"You're right that you didn't do anything. But that's exactly the problem. I don't want to be in a relationship that has to be hidden like it's something to be ashamed of."Lana's face fell. She reached into her pocket and pulled out an engagement ring."But Declan, I was ready to marry you. Look, I had this ring custom-made. It has your name engraved on it. I never once thought about breaking up with you."I know you were hurt before because I wouldn't go public. But now everyone at the company knows we're together. Do you still want to break up?"I just looked at her quietly. "Some things can't be fixed, Lana. It's over. I'm not accepting your apology."Jasper stepped in

Declan's POVMy expression was flat, and I didn't answer. If Lana hadn't called my mother, I wouldn't have come. Mom didn't know we'd broken up, so she'd given Lana my address.I decided to come just in case she tried turning up at my door later. I hadn't expected the entire office to be here. Most of them looked uncomfortable, with stiff smiles plastered across their faces. "Declan? You're really Ms. Sheffield's boyfriend? But that day at the office, didn't she say you two were just superior and subordinate?"Lana's expression darkened at the reminder. She'd only been trying to avoid suspicion back then; she never imagined I'd actually break up with her and resign over it.She swallowed her pride and apologized, and she sounded like she meant it. "Declan, I was just trying to keep our personal lives and work separate. I didn't want our relationship out in the open. If any of that upset you, I'm sorry."Until now, my ex-coworkers had only been guessing. Watching Lana apologize c

Third-Person POVEverything former employees had left behind was sorted into small boxes. There wasn't much, but the ring was so tiny that finding it was nearly impossible. Lana dumped out box after box until she finally spotted Declan's matching ring tucked in an easy-to-miss corner.By the time she left the storage room, her usually spotless blazer was covered in dust. An employee did a double take. "Ms. Sheffield, what happened to you?"But Lana didn't care how she looked. She grabbed the ring in one hand and Jasper's arm in the other, pulling him toward the door. "I can't reach Declan. Can you still get through to him?"She snatched Jasper's phone before he could answer and typed out a message. "Declan, where did you go?"The message bounced back immediately. Jasper was also blocked.Lana's chest tightened. How could this be possible? Why had Declan blocked both of them?Jasper put on a hurt expression. "Ms. Sheffield, is Declan still upset about the promotion? Maybe you s

Third-Person POVLana's body went rigid, but she kept her composure."That's impossible. I only suspended him for seven days. I never said anything about letting him go.""He submitted the resignation himself," Phil said before pausing."Ms. Sheffield, if I'm being honest, you've been too hard on Declan. Everyone who started around the same time as him has either moved up to team lead or become a project manager by now. He's the only one who's been stuck in the same spot, and nobody wants to stay in place forever."Lana's palms went damp as she listened. Had she really been too hard on Declan? She'd only been trying to avoid raising suspicion so that when their relationship eventually came out, no one could accuse him of sleeping his way up.That was why she'd rejected his promotion request year after year. She thought she was toughening him up, but she hadn't stopped to think about how it made him feel. She forced herself to keep it together. No matter what, she thought Declan
