Chapter 4

Author: Tally Keith
The client flew into an absolute rage, and no amount of bowing or scraping from Owen could salvage the situation.

The moment the client stormed out, Owen turned on me and bellowed, "You're deliberately sabotaging this company! You're destroying our client relationships one by one!"

I shrugged, looking entirely innocent. "Didn't you tell me yourself that only the profit generated during official working hours belongs to the company?

"This specific deal was negotiated entirely on my own time after hours. What if the partnership ended up costing the company money down the line? I'm just correcting my past mistakes. I couldn't possibly let the company take on that kind of liability."

Owen's face contorted with malice as he gritted his teeth. "You did this on purpose!"

I shook my head and put on a look of deep regret. "If I don't do what you say, I'm wrong. If I do exactly what you say, I'm still wrong. What exactly do I have to do to make you happy?"

Owen stared daggers at me, spitting out, "You piece of shit! Don't get too smug just yet!"

I frowned at his vulgar language but didn't let it bother me.

The next day, Macy burst into my office. Without asking a single question, she launched into a furious tirade.

"I asked Owen to help me run this place, and you're using your seniority to actively sabotage him at every turn! Toby, how can you be such a petty bully? Don't think you're indispensable around here!"

I let out a sharp laugh. Setting aside the fact that Owen was a complete newcomer acting like a CEO, I hadn't even said a word yet, and he had already run to Macy to spin his web of lies.

The moment I tried to speak up, Macy cut me off impatiently. "Am I the CEO or are you? Owen is incredibly talented, and his management role is a special arrangement I approved! It takes me one sentence to put whoever I want in charge. What right do you have to question my authority?"

I kept my face grim and remained silent. Seeing this, Macy softened her tone slightly. "Stop trying to get special treatment just because you're my fiance. Like I said, we need to keep business and personal matters completely separate."

I sneered inwardly. She seemed to have completely forgotten that the only reason she was sitting in the CEO's chair was that I had secured our partnership with Deltarune Group.

Keep business and personal matters completely separate, huh?

Deltarune Group's annual bidding process was happening next week. I'd like to see how the highly capable Owen and the strictly professional Macy handle the pitch on their own.

At the morning meeting the following day, the company formally approved Owen's disciplinary action against me in front of the entire staff.

Not only were my 3,000-dollar lottery winnings confiscated, but I was also fined an additional 30 thousand dollars as a penalty for embezzling public funds.

Owen smiled triumphantly from the front of the room.

"Hey, you. Come up here and deliver your self-reflection. Let's make this a lesson for everyone else to remind people of their place so they don't make the same mistake."

He wanted nothing more than to humiliate me.

I walked calmly up to the podium and spoke into the microphone. "I apologize. I was wrong."

The investigator frowned, looking deeply perplexed. "But when we questioned the other seven employees who attended the event separately, their testimonies matched perfectly. "Are you suggesting every single one of them is slandering you? What possible reason would they have to do that?"Noticing the investigator's skepticism, I took a deep breath and recounted exactly what had transpired that day. I even presented the audio recording I had captured as proof. As the recording of the bidding event played, the investigator's face visibly darkened.I added calmly, "Furthermore, by the day of the bidding, my official role in the company had already been demoted to janitor. What kind of company leaves its elite team on the sidelines and forces a janitor onto the stage to pitch a major contract?"I didn't stop there. I laid out everything that had happened to me at the company during this past period. When the investigator heard that Macy had handed over management of the company to a

Macy continued to beg over and over again, but it only made me feel sick to my stomach.I looked down at her from where I stood. "You should actually be thanking me. Ask yourself, Macy. The only reason you even have the wealth and status you enjoy today is that I secured that Deltarune contract for you three years ago, right?"That contract alone put you in the CEO's chair. Everything I am doing right now is simply taking back what is mine."No matter how loudly Macy cried out my name, I didn't stop walking.…Not long after I arrived home, the notifications on my phone from our company group chat began buzzing nonstop.Curious, I opened the messages to see the aftermath of the bidding event."Damn, the pressure when they came back today was terrifying. I've never seen Ms. Sanford have such a bad look before.""Well, of course she's miserable. Such a massive disaster happened, and she was leading the team. I heard Mr. Graham was absolutely furious and is determined to hold ever

"What?" Owen was the first to react. He shrieked sharply, "That's impossible! You're just a low-level grunt. What right do you have to 5% of the company's stock options? Stop trying to bluff your way out of this!"Owen was a newcomer, so he naturally had no clue about my contributions. Thanks to my money-magnet nature, everything from the contracts I handled to the latest machines we developed ran flawlessly. That was why the company required my presence at every major negotiation across the country. I had been pulling the heaviest workload while earning nothing more than the company's average salary. When the company was on the brink of bankruptcy, it was the exact numbers I wrote that secured the winning bid to save it. The board of directors granted me three-year stock options in recognition of my contributions and also to keep me tied down.Macy's and the other colleagues' expressions grew incredibly heavy. They knew my worth better than anyone.I turned my gaze to Macy. "W

I was utterly dumbfounded.Macy let out a sneer. "Stop acting. You went through all this trouble just to get my attention, didn't you? What? Did you regret forcing that breakup on me last time? You were too embarrassed to just ask me out, so you resorted to these little stunts to get me back."The moment the words left her mouth, the expressions of everyone at our table shifted.Macy and I had never gone public with our relationship. It wasn't that the company banned office romances. Macy was simply the one who minded it.She used to lecture me with a stern face, "We absolutely cannot make our relationship public. If people find out we're together, what will people think of you? I'm the CEO, and you're just a regular employee."They'll assume everything you worked so hard for was just handed to you because of me. I'm doing this for your own good!"For my own good? I couldn't help but sneer inwardly. Just because she wanted to "keep things professional", she held me back.I had m

The venue erupted into absolute chaos.People exchanged bewildered glances, sizing me up and whispering among themselves.Macy violently yanked me back toward my seat and hissed through her teeth, "Are you out of your mind? What kind of insane garbage is coming out of your mouth? Open your eyes and look at where we are!"My expression didn't change as I slapped her hand away. "I'm perfectly sane. You should open your eyes and look at the time. I just said I have officially resigned. I am free to leave.""You…" Macy burned with rage. "When did you resign? Who gave you permission to quit?"I shifted my gaze directly onto Owen.Owen interrupted in a panic. "Toby, is this your idea of revenge? If you want to throw a tantrum, at least pick the right venue. This isn't the place for you to cause a scene."Macy suddenly realized something, and a contemptuous sneer spread across her face. "Toby, are you pulling this stunt just to prove how important you are? Talk about a pathetic cry for

I continued, "I was wrong for failing to follow company policy. I was wrong for failing to establish clear boundaries in my job description and for repeatedly reviewing my colleagues' contracts without compensation."I was wrong for failing to differentiate between my official working hours and my personal time, and for repeatedly working overtime to secure deals for this company."I am now fully aware of my mistakes. From this day forward, I promise only to complete tasks within my direct scope of work. And I will not work a single minute of overtime once my shift ends."The room instantly erupted into chaos."You can't do that! If you don't look over the contracts, how are we supposed to close our deals smoothly?""You can't just quit helping us whenever you feel like it! What are we supposed to do? You're being incredibly selfish!"Macy was completely infuriated. Her expression darkened. "Toby, is this really the kind of attitude you come up with after reflection? Are you tryi

I ignored Owen's frantic shouting and walked right out.The next morning, the moment I arrived at my desk, the colleague in the adjacent cubicle stared at me as if he'd just seen a ghost. He spoke in a panic. "We have that major contract negotiation in Avalorne today. Why didn't you go with them?

After saying that, I threw the ruined watch into the trash can and turned to leave. That night, Macy called me countless times, but I cut straight to the chase and broke up with her. When all her sweet-talking failed to change my mind, she finally snapped and threw a bitter warning at me, telling

"You heard what Ms. Sanford said, didn't you?" Owen Pearson sneered, his face flushed with triumph."She specifically asked me to clean up any corruption in this company. You want to embezzle public funds? In your dreams!"I didn't bother arguing with him. I turned on my heel, ready to leave. But
