Elara

I woke up with the taste of last night still in my mouth.

The moment outside the hotel when Sebastian said my name and everything that had felt private for three days suddenly wasn’t. For a second I thought I was still standing on the pavement. Then the low hum of the engines settled in, and the pale light against the window told me I was already somewhere else.

Paris was gone.

I kept my eyes closed a little longer, as if that might delay the rest of it.

Lucien had barely acknowledged th

LucienSince Greece, I found myself looking forward to conversations that had nothing to do with work. I remembered details about her that served no professional purpose. I noticed when she was tired or frustrated, even when she tried to conceal it.For her birthday, I bought her a car, arranged for her favourite flowers to be waiting at the guest house, and organised a dinner I hoped she would enjoy. None of it was obligatory. I did those things because I wanted to make her happy. And now she had told me she loved me. Or she had said the words, at least.I couldn’t ignore the possibility that she meant them, but I couldn’t assume that she did.Victoria told me she loved me, then cheated on me the following day. Elara was different from Victoria in temperament and in the way she approached relationships. She had given me no reason to believe she would deliberately hurt me.Knowing that did not erase the memory of what happened.I spent years keeping my personal life uncomplicated. I u

LucienI carried Elara’s overnight bag to the car and placed it in the boot with her laptop bag and the rest of her belongings. The remaining cake sat in a small box on top of everything else. She had insisted on taking it home because, according to her, throwing away a perfectly good birthday cake was a crime.I pointed out that she could have another slice before leaving. She looked at me as though I had suggested something unreasonable.“Lucien, I cannot eat an entire cake by myself.”“You don’t have to eat it all at once.”She laughed and told me I was impossible before handing me the box to pack. Now she stood beside the passenger door, watching me arrange her things. She had changed into comfortable clothes for the drive back, her hair tied away from her face, and looked considerably more rested than when she arrived on Friday evening.“Have you got everything?” I asked. She checked the contents of her handbag before nodding. “Everything. Thank you for this weekend, Lucien. I ha

ElaraI woke up with Lucien’s arm around my waist and the events of the past twenty-four hours waiting for me the moment I opened my eyes.My birthday. The car. The dinner he’d arranged. The pictures. And, of course, Lucien himself.I shifted against him, careful not to disturb the comfortable weight of his arm, and stared at the ceiling. I had spent enough time with this man to know what I wanted when we were alone together. That part had never been particularly difficult to figure out.It was everything beyond that which had started to trouble me.I liked being around him. I liked the way he listened when I spoke about something that mattered to me, even when the subject was an artist whose work he didn’t particularly understand. I liked that he remembered things I mentioned in passing. I liked that he could be so infuriatingly literal that I sometimes had to turn away to laugh at him.Yesterday, he’d bought me a Mercedes-Benz because apparently giving a woman flowers and a birthday

LucienI was still on my back, hands behind my head, watching her stand over me in that black lingerie when the need to piss became impossible to ignore.“Give me a minute,” I said, sitting up. “I’ll be right back.”She only nodded and stepped aside so I could pass. I went into the bathroom, relieved myself, washed my hands, and came back out.She had turned toward the window. The second she heard the door I walked straight to her, caught her by the waist, and kissed her hard. She made a small sound against my mouth and kissed me back, fingers already sliding up my chest. She broke the kiss just enough to speak. “Chair. Sit.”She looked at me, then at the armchair I had dragged closer earlier. A slow smile pulled at her mouth. She walked me backward until the backs of my knees hit the seat and pushed me down. I sat. She stood between my legs, reached behind herself, and unhooked the lingerie. The straps slipped off her shoulders. The whole thing fell to the floor in one soft drop. She

ElaraI stood in front of the bathroom mirror longer than I meant to, turning slightly to check the way the black lingerie sat against my skin. It was my exact size, the thin straps resting on my shoulders and the lace just sheer enough that I wondered whether Lucien had picked it because he knew exactly what it would do or because he simply had good taste. Probably both. The thought made my mouth curve.I still could not quite believe I had done this. One minute we were taking photos with the cake, the next I was muttering something about needing the bathroom and practically fleeing the living room so I could start the evening early. Smooth, Elara. Very smooth.Dinner was good. The lamb broth was delicious, the wine better, and when I cut the cake he took only a thin slice, muttering that it was too much sugar and too many calories. I called him an old man to his face and watched the corner of his mouth twitch. He still let me put the rest on his plate. After that I handed him my

LucienI set the last plate down and checked the temperature of the lamb sauce one more time. The chef had come earlier in the afternoon, prepared everything, and left clear instructions. All that remained was heating the rice and the sauce, which I had done. The table was ready. Two place settings, wine glasses, cutlery aligned the way I preferred it.The shower stopped running from the bathroom.I turned to the cake she had brought with her, and began lighting the candles I had arranged around it. The small flames caught one by one.I could not remember the last time I had done anything like this. Not since Victoria. Even then it had felt different. More expected. More like fulfilling a role. This was quieter, and for some reason that made it heavier.Had the car been excessive? Possibly. I turned the question over while I lit the next candle. Victoria had always responded to visible gestures — the more obvious the better. I had assumed Elara might be the same. A practical gift with
