Lucien

By the time I returned to Beaumont House, the sun had already begun its descent over the eastern gardens.

The house was quiet. It usually was.

I preferred it that way.

The staff knew better than to fill the rooms with noise, and I had never developed the common need for constant background chatter simply to feel at ease. Silence let me think.

Today it did nothing to quiet the irritation under my skin.

I handed my coat to the waiting staff and crossed into the main living room, loosening

ElaraThree days after Greece, I had packed away almost everything that reminded me of my wedding. The dress went first. It had arrived from the alterations shop two weeks before the ceremony, wrapped in layers of tissue paper and tucked inside the largest garment box I owned. I had spent months choosing every detail—the neckline, the lace, the exact shade of white—and somehow it took less than five minutes to fold the fabric back into the box and close the lid.The invitations followed. Then the shoes. Then the little velvet pouch containing the earrings I had bought for the ceremony.By the time Clara arrived, half my bedroom looked like a storage room. She stood in the doorway holding two cups of coffee, her eyes moving over the boxes scattered across the floor.“You're really doing this.”I didn't look up from the drawer I was emptying. “Doing what?”“Packing up your entire wedding.”“It isn't happening anymore.”“I know.”I placed another item into the box.Clara came farther int

Silence let me think.Today it did nothing to quiet the irritation under my skin.I handed my coat to the waiting staff and crossed into the main living room, loosening my cufflinks as I moved toward the bar.Sebastian was already in the drawing room, laptop balanced on one knee, a glass of whiskey untouched beside him.As Chief Operating Officer of Beaumont Holdings he had unrestricted access to every part of my business. Unfortunately, he had decided that privilege extended to my home whenever it suited him.He was also my only friend.Which meant I tolerated far more from him than from anyone else.He looked up. “Finally.”“I wasn’t aware you were waiting.”

  • Older Than My Heart   Chapter 5

Elara I woke to unfamiliar sheets and the golden wash of afternoon light across white walls. For a terrifying, disoriented second, my mind was a total blank. I couldn't remember where I was, what day it was, or why the air smelled so distinctly of salt air, expensive wool, and intoxicating sandalwood. Then the haze of sleep began to lift. I was in Lucien’s room. In his bed. Naked under the duvet.A hot, sudden wave of shame and heat rushed up my neck.As I sat up, pulling the duvet tightly against my body, a sharp ache bloomed between my legs and the memories of what transpired last night flooded my mind with startling clarity. The force of Lucien’s hands, the feeling of his mouth on my skin, the relentless rhythm he’d set, the way he kept me on the edge until the only word left in my mouth was his name.I buried my face in my hands from horror. What had I done? Before last night, I had never once viewed Lucien Beaumont as a man in a romantic sense. Sure, he was objectively a good-l

  • Older Than My Heart   Chapter 4

Lucien I had prepared for numerous contingencies when I cleared Elara to join this acquisition trip. I had anticipated tears, quiet brooding, even a sudden professional retreat. Seduction carried out with the blunt force of a woman trying to destroy herself had barely made the list.I pulled my collar from her grip. “Do you have any idea what you’re asking, Miss Whitmore?”Her green eyes, glassy with alcohol, stared up at me with a reckless, desperate heat. “Yes.”Elara Whitmore presented such an immaculate, unbreakable exterior to the world. Nobody saw the pressure she carried, the vulnerability she fought so viciously to suppress, and the absolute brilliance she kept contained just to make the fragile men around her feel larger. But now I watched as the carefully constructed mask shattered at her feet.“You’re asking me to cross a professional boundary that—”“I’m asking you to fuck me,” she countered, leaning closer until the scent of her floral perfume mixed with the sharp edge

  • Older Than My Heart   Chapter 3

Elara The moment the plane’s wheels touched the tarmac, I turned my phone back on. Big mistake. It lit up like the Fourth of July fireworks. Seventeen missed calls from Elliot. Twelve from Vivienne. A string of texts from Clara ranging from sympathetic to worried to hysterical.I shot the women a quick text: ‘Went to Greece. Be back later.’‘GREECE?!’‘YOU WENT RIGHT BACK TO WORK?!’I silenced the strings of frenzied texts and slipped the device into my bag. The drive from the airport to the hotel was short and suffocatingly tense.I kept my gaze fixed on the view outside the window, watching whitewashed villas stacked against the volcanic cliffs of Santorini; the Sea stretched out behind them, forming a hard, brilliant backdrop that could easily have taken my breath away.Yet, I didn’t have a drop of excitement to spare. My first time in Greece, and none of its beauty registered. My mind was trapped in an agonizing loop—circling back to the video, the mountain of unread messages

  • Older Than My Heart   Chapter 2

Elara I found Lucien’s driver waiting near the service gate when I stormed out, searching for an escape. He blinked at me in confusion. “Something wrong, ma’am?”“Can you take me home, please?” I said. “I forgot some important files for Mr. Beaumont.”He gave me a questioning look but nodded. “Of course, ma’am.”He quietly opened the door for me and said nothing when I asked him to speed up before my sister or best friend would come out looking for me.I kept my face turned toward the window as we pulled away from the venue and four years of my life. The lump in my throat grew, but my eyes were mercifully dry.By the time the car stopped in front of my building, I felt numb and hollow.I powered off my buzzing phone, thanked the driver and told him to leave. He didn’t ask about the files, he simply nodded and drove away. The first thing my eyes landed on as I entered my apartment was the wedding gift basket and the two plane tickets to France for a honeymoon that would never happen.
