Chapter 4

作者: Fortune Fishy
As she spoke, Jenna stepped forward and gently rubbed Jake's head, comforting him.

"Alright, don't be upset. Worst-case scenario, you can just quit. I'm more than capable of taking care of you. It really breaks my heart to see you always getting bullied."

Her voice was soft and tender, and she looked like she was feeling extremely bad for Jake.

A bitter ache spread through my chest.

Just then, Dr. Goldberg poked his head out of the ambulance again. "We really can't delay any longer. Your mom's complexion looks terrible, and we're running low on oxygen, too."

Even though I knew full well that Jake was lying, I really couldn't afford to waste any more time. With no other choice, I asked, "How much is the fine?"

"The fine is just 1,000 dollars," he answered meaningfully. "You're not going to tell me you can't bear to pay that either, right?"

I thought the 800 dollars for unlocking the clamps was already outrageous enough, but now, just for calling an ambulance, I was being fined another 1,000 dollars.

I looked at Jenna exasperatedly. "Do you still think I'm the one in the wrong here?"

"This just shows that our complex has great security measures," she answered unapologetically. "Besides, Jake already told you that these rules were set by the head of security. Stop making things difficult for him and just cooperate. What's the big deal?"

Jake added, "If you don't pay the fine, Mitch, I really can't open the gate for you."

But I clearly caught the flash of provocation in his eyes. And with Jenna standing beside him, firmly against me, I couldn't hold back any longer.

"Do you even know who the patient in the ambulance is?" I roared.

Jenna rolled her eyes. "Of course I do. But no matter who it is, you still need to cooperate with Jake. How could I bear to let the young man I sponsor suffer any grievances?"

"Okay, fine," I said, nodding and scoffing coldly, not wanting to say another word to her.

Just then, Dr. Goldberg shouted anxiously, "The patient has gone into cardiac arrest! If we don't get to the hospital right now, it might be too late!"

Trevor couldn't stand it anymore. He shouted at the stunned Jake, "Open the gate right now! If the patient really dies, you'll be going to prison!"

Jake's face immediately turned deathly pale. This time, I didn't have to say anything before he scrambled over to unlock the gate, his hands trembling.

"Why are you shouting?" Jenna continued to mutter in annoyance. "How can someone go into cardiac arrest that easily? I bet she's just faking it."

As she spoke, she walked over to the ambulance, probably wanting to check for herself. She casually glanced inside, and the next second, her whole body stiffened.

A scream unlike anything I'd ever heard before erupted from her.

"Mom? Why is it you?"

Everyone in the room froze, including Jenna.Jake froze for a moment, then quickly snapped back to his senses and pushed the young lady away."Peyton, I'm fine. Let go of me."Then he anxiously explained to Jenna, "Jen, please don't misunderstand. Peyton is just a classmate. There's nothing going on between us."However, that explanation only made things sound more suspicious. Jenna's expression darkened. She had caught something off about what the young lady—whom we later learned to be Peyton Read—had said."Jake," she started, her expression cold. "The 'old woman' she mentioned… Surely, it's not me, is it?"Jake quickly shook his head. "No, of course not! You heard wrong, Jen."Only then did Peyton realize there were other people in the interrogation room besides the police. She awkwardly took a step back and also tried to explain, "Yes, you misheard. I didn't say that. I only came here because I was worried about Jake."But no one there was an idiot.Jenna glanced at Jake e

I hadn't planned on going, but then I thought that since we had already reached this point, surely Jenna wouldn't ignore what the police had to say.So, I got out of bed and headed to the police station. When I arrived, Jenna was already waiting for me at the entrance. The moment she saw me, she rushed over, grabbed me, and dragged me inside."Hurry up and explain everything to the police. Jake is just a part-time security guard, and he was just following his superior's orders. None of this has anything to do with him!"I let her pull me along while listening to her until she stopped abruptly. I looked up and realized we were already at the door of the interrogation room.Jenna pushed the door open and dragged me inside. Before the officers could say anything, she blurted, "Officer, was it Mitch McLaren who made the report? I'm his wife, and I can testify that this has nothing to do with Jake. Mitch is just jealous of how nice I am to Jake, and so he's deliberately retaliating."

The officers almost laughed out of sheer frustration. One of them looked Jake up and down skeptically and asked, "Are you really a college student?"Realizing that he had spoken his inner thoughts aloud, he hurriedly cleared his throat and said sternly, "You're just security guards. You don't have law enforcement authority, understand?"Patrick couldn't hold back any longer. "Officer, I don't understand any of that. I only know that I'm the head of security here, and they all have to listen to me."I make the rules here in this community. Mitch destroyed four clamps without my permission, so he needs to pay. Otherwise, he's not going anywhere!"Even the officers were losing patience at this point. "Let me make this clear. You clamped someone else's car without authorization and refused to let them leave—you're in the wrong there. If we really pursued this, you could even go to jail for it. Do you understand?"Patrick's expression stiffened. "So, you're saying I won't get any compe

Jake let out a terrified scream just as the car was about to hit him. His legs gave out, and he fell to the side. And here I thought he actually wasn't scared at all. I shot him a look of disdain and drove off.As I exited the garage, I heard Jake's trembling voice behind me."Sir, that guy is way too arrogant. He doesn't respect you at all. If you let him continue like this, how will you be able to do your job in the future? What authority will you have left in this community?"We have to call the police! Report him to the cops and have them arrest him and teach him a lesson!"I wasn't concerned about it. After all, I hadn't done anything wrong here. That night, Jenna didn't come home. She was probably at the hospital taking care of Kelly.…The next morning, Saturday, I was still asleep when loud knocking woke me up.I glanced at the time and saw that it was only 6:00 am. I wondered if it was Jenna, though it was still quite early.I got up, opened the door—and froze. Stand

Jake and Jenna really pulled off that whole "playing the victim" act perfectly.Looking at Jenna's still exquisitely made-up face, I felt a wave of disgust.Right then, a nurse came out to remind us, "Family of the patient, please go pay the fees right away. The patient needs to undergo surgery immediately."Jenna shot me a vicious glare before following the nurse to pay the fees.Jake stood up slowly and walked over to me, his tone dripping with contempt. "Did you see that, Mitch? No matter what happens, Jen will always believe me. I suggest you stop trying to fight me. You're not going to win."That was when it finally clicked. All his hostility toward me was because of Jenna. But what he didn't realize was that every single dollar Jenna spent came straight out of my account.I chuckled. I hadn't even settled the score with him for clamping my car earlier, yet here he was, picking a fight with me first. If I hadn't been in a rush to get Kelly to the hospital, I wouldn't have h

Over on the other side, Jake was still trembling as he fumbled with the lock.Jenna, who had been so indifferent just moments ago, frantically rushed forward, snatched the keys from his hand, and quickly opened the gate herself.By then, I'd already jumped back into the ambulance. The next second, Trevor slammed on the gas, and we sped straight out of the complex. The whole way there, my heart was in my throat as I watched Dr. Goldberg perform CPR on Kelly without stopping. Thankfully, she eventually regained a faint breath.15 minutes later, the ambulance arrived at the hospital. The emergency room doctors hurried over and, together with Dr. Goldberg, wheeled her straight into the ER.Thanks to the information communicated during the ride over, the ER doctors had already prepared oxygen and quickly hooked Kelly up to it.As I watched some color return to her face, a doctor began examining her. Only then did I finally feel the tension in my chest ease.It was then that I realiz
