Elena's Pov:

The soft morning light filtered through the sheer curtains of my apartment, but it did little to chase away the fog in my head. I sat at the kitchen table, cradling a mug of tea that had long since gone cold. The pregnancy test sat in the trash can, the two unmistakable lines burned into my memory.

Pregnant.

The word echoed in my mind, bringing with it an overwhelming mix of emotions. Excitement. Fear. Regret.

I reached for my phone, scrolling through my contacts until I landed on Daniel’s name. His smile stared back at me from the photo, a snapshot of happier times. Daniel had always been my rock, the steady force in my otherwise chaotic life. He deserved to know, but telling him wouldn’t be easy.

I pressed the call button, my heart pounding as the phone rang.

“Come on, Daniel,” I whispered under my breath.

The call went to voicemail.

I tried again, but the result was the same. I set the phone down with a sigh, leaning back in my chair. Of course he’d be busy. His job had him traveling constantly, and I couldn’t expect him to drop everything just because my life was falling apart.

The knock on my door shattered the fragile quiet, sharp and insistent. My stomach churned as I set the phone down. I wasn’t expecting anyone, and a nagging sense of dread settled over me as I walked to the door.

I peeked through the peephole. Ethan.

My heart dropped, and I froze in place, staring at his familiar face. His jaw was set, his eyes burning with a determination I hadn’t seen in years. I thought about ignoring him, pretending I wasn’t home, but Ethan never gave up that easily.

The knock came again, harder this time.

“Elena, I know you’re in there,” he called, his voice tight with frustration.

I cursed under my breath and reluctantly unlocked the door, opening it just enough to glare at him. “What do you want?”

“We need to talk,” he said, his tone sharp and unwavering.

I tightened my grip on the door. “There’s nothing to talk about, Ethan.”

His jaw clenched, and he took a step forward, forcing me to either let him in or slam the door in his face. I chose neither, standing frozen as he pushed the door open and stepped inside.

“You can’t just barge into my life like this,” I snapped, following him as he walked into the living room.

Ethan turned to face me, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my chest tighten. “You’re pregnant.”

The words hung in the air between us like a live wire, sparking with tension.

I folded my arms, trying to steady my breathing. “That’s none of your business.”

He laughed, a bitter, humorless sound. “None of my business? Are you serious right now? I got an email from the hospital, Elena. They congratulated me on the pregnancy.”

My stomach twisted. Of course, the hospital.

“You had no right to go snooping,” I said, my voice rising.

“I wasn’t snooping,” he shot back. “They sent it to me because they think I’m the father. And I think they’re right.”

I shook my head, the denial tumbling from my lips before I could stop it. “You don’t know anything, Ethan.”

His eyes flashed with anger. “Don’t do that. Don’t stand there and act like I’m crazy. I know how dates work, Elena. I know what happened between us that night.”

My cheeks flushed with heat. “That doesn’t mean anything.”

“It means everything,” he said, his voice rising. “You think I haven’t thought about it? You think I haven’t replayed that night a thousand times in my head? It was the last time we were together before everything fell apart. And now you’re pregnant.”

I pressed my hands to my temples, the weight of his words crashing over me. “Ethan, stop.”

“No, I won’t stop,” he said, stepping closer. “You’re not going to shut me out of this, Elena. Not this time. If that baby is mine—”

“If?” I snapped, cutting him off. “Do you hear yourself? You’re not even sure, and you’re standing here acting like you have some claim over me, over my life.”

“I am sure,” he said, his voice unwavering. “I know that baby is mine. I can feel it, Elena. And I’m not going to let you push me away just because you’re scared.”

My throat tightened, and I took a step back, needing distance from the sheer force of his conviction. “You don’t get to decide how I feel or what I do, Ethan. You lost that right the day you lied to me.”

His expression faltered, just for a moment, but he recovered quickly. “I know I screwed up. I know I hurt you in ways I can never take back. But this isn’t about us anymore. This is about that baby, and I’m not going anywhere until we figure this out.”

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but I blinked them away, refusing to let him see how much his words were affecting me. “You don’t get to swoop in and play hero now. You weren’t there when I needed you, Ethan. Why should I believe you’ll be there for this?”

His face twisted with pain, but he didn’t back down. “Because I’m not the same man I was then. I’m not going to let my mistakes define me—not when I have a chance to make things right.”

I shook my head, the walls around my heart closing tighter. “I can’t do this with you.”

“You don’t have to do it with me,” he said, his voice softer now. “But I’m not going to walk away. Not this time.”

We stood there in silence, the tension between us thick and suffocating. Finally, Ethan let out a heavy sigh and turned toward the door.

“This isn’t over,” he said, his voice low but firm. “I’m not going anywhere—not when my child is involved.”

The door closed behind him, and the silence that followed was deafening. I sank onto the couch, my hands trembling as I pressed them against my stomach.

Ethan’s words echoed in my mind, his certainty like a weight I couldn’t escape.

I had tried so hard to keep control, to keep the walls up around my heart and my life. But now, everything was crumbling, and I wasn’t sure I could pick up the pieces on my own.

  • One Night, Two Dads    Chapter 117: Love, Resilience and Strength

Elena's POV Four years had passed, and life had unfolded in ways I never could have imagined.Daniel and I are married now. It wasn’t a grand, extravagant event — just a small ceremony with close friends and family. But it had been perfect. I still remembered the way Daniel’s eyes locked on mine as I walked down the aisle, the way his fingers trembled slightly when he slid the ring onto my finger. The way his whispered “I love you” had calmed my nerves in an instant. Our wedding may have been simple, but our love? That was anything but.Chase was four years old now — bright-eyed, full of questions, and sweet in ways that melted my heart. He had Daniel’s calm nature — steady and thoughtful — but with just enough of my stubbornness to keep things interesting.“Mom!” Chase’s little voice rang out from the living room. “Can you tie my shoe?”“Coming!” I called back, setting my coffee mug down. When I stepped into the room, I couldn’t help but smile. Chase sat cross-legged on the carpet,

  • One Night, Two Dads    Chapter 116: Sweet Surprise

Elena's POV The warmth of morning sunlight kissed my face, stirring me awake. My lashes fluttered as I blinked a few times, adjusting to the light streaming through the curtains. Something felt... different. The room smelled faintly of lavender, and the air carried a sense of calm — unusual for my chaotic life these days.I sat up slowly, my gaze sweeping across the room. My eyes widened.Everything was spotless — no, perfect. The clothes I’d left scattered on the chair were neatly folded. The empty glasses on the nightstand were gone. Even the floor looked freshly mopped, shining faintly in the morning glow. A bouquet of fresh roses sat on the dresser, their vibrant red petals bright against the white vase.Daniel.I smiled to myself. He was always doing things like this — quietly stepping in to make my life easier without asking for credit. My heart warmed at the thought.I turned to check on Chase. He was curled up on his side, snuggled beneath the covers, his little face relaxed

  • One Night, Two Dads    Chapter 115: In our feelings

Elena's POV I spent most of the day convincing myself that I was ready — that talking to Daniel wouldn’t be as terrifying as I’d built it up to be. Mia’s words kept replaying in my head.“Don’t let fear stop you from something that could actually make you feel whole again.”By evening, I was still nervous, but I knew I couldn’t keep running from this. It was time. The next morning, I got up early to prepare Chase’s bag — diapers, wipes, his favorite stuffed elephant — the usual things I carried when we went out. He was getting so big now, already crawling everywhere, babbling non-stop. Each day, he felt more and more like a little person, and I knew Daniel had played a huge part in that. After dressing Chase in his soft blue onesie, I scooped him into my arms.“Alright, little man,” I whispered, “let’s go see Daniel.”---Daniel greeted me with his usual warm smile when I arrived. He stood in the doorway, his hair still damp from a shower, dressed in a fitted black t-shirt and jeans.

  • One Night, Two Dads    Chapter 114: Take me to the clouds

Elena's POV I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, unable to shake Daniel’s words from my mind.“I’m here... not just as a friend, but as someone who cares about you.”I closed my eyes, replaying that moment over and over again. The warmth in his voice, the softness in his gaze — it all lingered in my thoughts, making my chest feel tight. The truth was, I’d been denying it for weeks. The way my heart raced whenever he smiled, the way I caught myself thinking about him even when he wasn’t around. I told myself it was nothing — that it was just comfort, or maybe gratitude. But it wasn’t.I knew it.I rolled onto my side, clutching the pillow close to my chest. Daniel had been denying it too — pushing his feelings aside, holding back when it was so clear he wanted more. I could see it in his eyes when we talked, feel it in those quiet moments when his hand lingered just a second too long.He wanted me.And the truth was... I wanted him too.But I didn’t know how to say it. After so much

  • One Night, Two Dads    Chapter 113: Cut to the feeling

Elena's POVI lay on my bed, the soft hum of the ceiling fan above me creating a calming rhythm. My body felt heavy, not with exhaustion but with a strange sense of peace. For the first time in a long while, life felt... manageable. Maybe even a little happy.Chase’s giggles still echoed in my head — that sweet, bubbly laugh that made my heart melt every single time. He was growing so fast. Just yesterday, he was this tiny bundle in my arms, barely able to hold up his head. Now, he was crawling around the house like he owned the place, babbling "goo goo ga ga" as if he had so much to say but just couldn’t find the words yet.I smiled to myself, turning onto my side to stare at the empty spot beside me on the bed.Daniel had been coming around more often lately — always showing up with a warm smile, always willing to lend a hand. What started as simple work discussions had shifted into something... more. Something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.I remembered the way he looked at me

  • One Night, Two Dads    Chapter 112: Resilience

Elena's POVAs the evening at the Pizza Club in McPherson, Kansas, drew to a close, the warmth of the celebration lingered in the air. Laughter and the aroma of freshly baked pizza had filled the room, creating memories we would cherish. Daniel, ever the gentleman, offered to escort me outside while the others settled the bill.Stepping out into the night, a brisk March breeze greeted us, sending a shiver down my spine. Noticing my discomfort, Daniel immediately shrugged off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders."Here, take this," he said, his voice filled with concern. "Can't have you catching a cold now."I looked up at him, gratitude warming me more than the jacket ever could. "Thank you, Daniel. You're always so thoughtful."We began to stroll along the quiet street, the soft glow of streetlights casting elongated shadows on the pavement. The town had a serene quality at night, with only the distant hum of traffic disrupting the silence."So, how have you been?" I asked, gla
