Roberto stared at the photograph in his hands for a long time before he trusted himself to speak again.

"Marsh," he said slowly. "Leonard Marsh. He's sat across from me at every board meeting for the last six years. I've spent months assuming he simply wanted my chair out of ordinary ambition."

"Maybe it was never just ambition," Alicia said quietly, studying the photograph beside him. "Maybe some part of him has always known, somewhere underneath, that he was owed something he couldn't name."

They drove back to the city in tense, careful silence, both of them turning the implications over from every possible angle. By the time they reached Carla's office again, Priya was already waiting, alerted ahead of time, her expression sharp with the particular focus she brought to any problem worth solving quickly.

"I pulled everything I could find on Leonard Marsh in the last hour," she said, sliding a folder across the desk the moment they sat down.

"Officially adopted at age five by a family named Marsh, up in the northern counties, records sealed under a standard closed adoption. No father listed. Mother's name given only as a single initial, which matches nothing on public record."

"Isabel Duarte," Roberto said quietly.

"Almost certainly," Carla agreed, joining them with her own laptop already open. "I cross referenced the adoption date against Isabel's death record. Three weeks apart. Whoever arranged the adoption moved quickly, and quietly, exactly the way you'd expect if someone wanted an inconvenient heir tucked away before anyone thought to ask questions."

Alicia leaned forward, her sharp, focused calm settling fully into place. "Does Marsh know? Any of it?"

"I can't answer that with certainty," Carla said. "But I found something else that concerns me more urgently right now." She turned her laptop toward them, pulling up a calendar entry. "Marsh's assistant confirmed an unscheduled meeting on his calendar for this evening. Private location, no other board members invited, arranged less than three hours ago."

"With who?" Roberto asked, already feeling the cold, familiar dread settling into his chest.

Carla hesitated before answering, and Roberto understood, in the half second before she spoke, exactly what she was about to say.

"The meeting request came through an intermediary," Carla said carefully, "but the calling number traces back to a phone registered under one of Ignacio Vasquez's personal shell accounts."

The room went very quiet.

"He's already found him," Alicia said slowly, dread evident in her voice. "Or he's known for years, exactly like the old woman said, and he's simply decided tonight is finally the night to make contact directly."

"We don't know that's what tonight's meeting is about," Priya said, though her own voice carried little real conviction.

"We know enough," Roberto said, standing abruptly, restless energy demanding movement. "If Ignacio's spent fifteen years watching Rafael's son from a distance, waiting to see whether he ever became a threat worth eliminating, and now that threat has suddenly, urgently become useful to us, I don't believe for one second that meeting tonight is a coincidence."

"What do you mean, useful to us?" Priya asked.

"I mean someone tipped Ignacio off," Alicia said grimly, already reaching the same conclusion Roberto had arrived at half a breath earlier. "The same way someone tipped off Leonard Marsh before that first board meeting. We have a leak somewhere in this investigation, and whoever it is moved fast enough to warn Ignacio the moment we started asking questions about Isabel Duarte's son."

Roberto felt the cold, sickening realization settle over him fully. "Which means Ignacio isn't meeting Marsh tonight to check on an old, forgotten loose end. He's meeting him because he knows we're closing in on exactly who Marsh really is, and he's deciding, right now, tonight, whether that loose end has finally become too dangerous to leave alive."

The words landed heavy in the room, and for a moment nobody spoke at all, the full weight of what they might already be too late to prevent settling over all four of them at once.

"Where's the meeting happening?" Alicia asked finally, her voice tight and urgent.

Carla scrolled quickly through the calendar entry. "A private marina club, twenty minutes from here. The same kind of isolated, controlled location Ignacio's used before."

Roberto felt something cold and certain settle over him, an old, unwanted echo of a boat and a name and a death ruled accidental thirty two years ago rising sharply in his memory.

"A marina," he said slowly. "Alicia, that's not a coincidence. That's a message. Ignacio doesn't choose locations at random. If Rafael died on the water once already, and Ignacio's planning to meet his son there tonight…"

He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to.

Alicia was already moving toward the door, keys in hand, her expression set with the same fierce, unshakable determination Roberto had watched carry her through every crisis since the night they'd met.

"Then we get there before he does," she said. "Whatever this meeting actually is, Leonard Marsh doesn't deserve to become the second Vasquez brother lost to that same water without ever understanding why."

Roberto followed her out, Priya and Carla already mobilizing security and legal contingencies behind them, his heart hammering with a fear sharper than anything he'd felt since the night he first learned his own parents had died the exact same practiced, deniable way.

They were still three minutes from the car when Roberto's phone rang, an unfamiliar number flashing bright against the darkened parking garage, and something in his gut told him, with sudden, terrible certainty, exactly whose voice he was about to hear.

He answered anyway.

"Mr. Alvarez," Ignacio said, calm and unhurried, the sound of water lapping softly audible somewhere behind his voice. "I understand you've been asking questions about an old family matter that isn't yours to inherit. I thought you should hear, directly from me, exactly how that kind of curiosity tends to end."

The line went silent for one long, unbearable second, followed by the distant, unmistakable sound of a single gunshot echoing faintly across open water.

  • Only Her Touch    What Fear Leaves Behind

The drive to the marina felt endless, Roberto's knuckles white on the wheel, Alicia's own heart hammering so hard she could feel it in her throat. Neither of them spoke. There was nothing useful left to say until they knew what they were driving toward.Security lights came into view first, then the flashing gleam of a private dock, then Priya's voice crackling urgently through the car's speaker, patched in from wherever she'd been coordinating the last frantic minutes."Marsh is alive," she said, before either of them could ask. "Our security team reached the marina two minutes ahead of you. He's shaken, but unharmed. The shot went into the water, not into him. It looks like it was meant to frighten rather than kill."Alicia felt the breath she'd been holding release all at once, relief crashing through her so fast it left her briefly dizzy. Beside her, Roberto's shoulders dropped visibly, some of the rigid tension finally easing from his frame."And Ignacio?" he asked."Gone before

  • Only Her Touch    Thirty Years Of The Same Pattern

Carla's office at midnight looked nothing like the calm, orderly space Roberto was used to visiting during business hours. Files covered every surface, several boxes still half unpacked near the door, and Carla herself looked like she hadn't stopped moving since the message she'd sent hours earlier."Sit down," she said, without preamble, gesturing to the chairs across from her desk. "This is going to take a while to explain properly, and I want you both to actually absorb it rather than reacting halfway through."Alicia sat first, exhaustion and steady resolve both visible in equal measure on her face. Roberto took the seat beside her, bracing himself for whatever came next."The shell network funding your kidnapping, Josephine's death, the venue purchase, all of it," Carla began, "traces back through Meridian Crown Holdings to a predecessor company called Aurelio Trust. I only found it because Meridian Crown's original incorporation documents listed Aurelio as a founding investor, w

  • Only Her Touch    How Deep The Watching Goes

Alicia was already moving before she'd finished reading the message twice, phone pressed to her ear, Doris's number ringing once, twice, three times before dropping into voicemail."Come on," she muttered, ending the call and immediately trying again, her pulse climbing with every unanswered ring. Roberto found her in the hallway outside the meeting room, his expression sharpening the moment he saw her face. "What happened?""Someone knows Doris came to me," Alicia said, showing him the message with a hand that wasn't quite steady. "They sent this to my personal number, Roberto. Not the number Priya uses. Not the number on any business card. My actual phone."Roberto's jaw tightened as he read it, something cold and furious settling behind his eyes. "That number exists in exactly three places. My contacts, Priya's contacts, and whatever system Carla's office uses for secure communication.""Which means someone's inside one of those systems," Alicia said, the pieces already assembling

  • Only Her Touch    An Unlikely Message

Alicia read the message three times before she trusted herself to react to it at all.“This is Doris. I need to talk to you. Not as an enemy. I think you're the only person who might actually understand what I'm about to do.”She sat with her phone in her lap for a long moment, the late afternoon light slanting gold across the sitting room floor, turning the words over in her mind the way she'd once turned over contracts and crisis reports, searching for the trap she assumed had to be hiding somewhere inside them. "What is it?" Roberto asked, glancing up from the files spread across the table between them, Ferreira's latest findings still waiting for their attention. Alicia turned the phone toward him without a word, watching his expression shift from mild curiosity to sharp, immediate suspicion as he read the message twice himself."It's a trap," he said flatly. "Ignacio sent her to reel you into something.""Maybe," Alicia allowed. "Or maybe not. I've spent three weeks watching th
