Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Nameless
I hugged the urn tighter.

Dad used to wrap me in a warm coat. Now I was the one keeping him warm.

My phone rang. Mom's impatient voice came through.

"Where are you? Ethan and Hen want Nathan to perform for them. Hurry up, or Ethan's birthday will be over."

My numb fingers tightened around the phone. “Excuse me?"

Mom sounded as if she'd misheard me. “What did you just say?"

"I said, excuse me?" My voice trembled. "Dad is an opera singer, not some entertainer for hire. Why do they get to order him around whenever they feel like it? He's not some circus monkey."

"Adrian! Is that how you speak to your mother?" Her voice turned sharp.

"I should be the one questioning you. Your father made you leave that comment on Ethan's social media page, didn't he? Only petty men like him make such snide remarks.

"Ethan felt guilty about that all day. If he hadn't stopped me, I would've dealt with your father already. What's wrong with asking Nathan to perform for them? Isn't that what he was trained for?"

Then came the threat. "You have ten minutes. If you ruin Ethan's birthday, I'm cutting your allowance again."

A tear slipped down my face. "But, Mom… today's Dad's birthday too."

Silence was Mom's only response.

I gripped the phone so tightly it nearly cracked. "Every year, you buy gifts for Ethan and Henry. Dad shares the same birthday as your so-called first love, too. It's been 18 years. Have you ever remembered it even once?

"Dad never blamed you. But I remembered everything."

The line fell silent again.

When she finally spoke, there was the faintest hint of apology in her tone. "Fine. This is on me. No wonder Nathan dragged you into this little act.

"Have him bring you home. Ethan and Henry probably won't finish their cake anyway. You two can help clean up the leftovers."

"Samantha Kelly!" I finally snapped. "Is that all Dad and I deserve? Their leftovers?"

"Adrian Sinclair!" she sounded angrier than I'd ever heard her. "Have you forgotten I'm your mother? You don't get to speak to me like that!"

"So what?" Tears streamed down my face, leaving cold, stinging tracks on my cheeks due to the freezing wind. "I don't have a mother who refused to spend 2,000 dollars to save my dad's life."

"Excuse me?"

"2,000 dollars. That's all it would've taken to stop the bleeding. You spent hundreds of thousands celebrating that father and son pair, but you refused to spend even a fraction of it to save a life…"

"Enough!" Mom finally lost her patience.

"Are you serious right now? Ethan lost his wife at a young age and had to raise a child on his own while struggling in the entertainment industry. Do you know how hard that is? Why is Nathan being so dramatic?

"And how much money have you and Nathan drained from me all these years? I know exactly what the two of you are after. Pretending someone died just to get money? Fine. Then stay dead forever. I don't want to see either of you again."

And she hung up.

A second later, a notification from the bank appeared. The account Dad and I shared had been frozen.

That was Mom's favorite punishment. Whenever either of us angered her, she'd freeze our bank account and our bank cards.

I'd rather starve than beg her, so every time, Dad was the one who swallowed his pride and pleaded to Mom to get the money for my tuition and living expenses.

Now he was gone. The only person who would ever beg her for me was gone, too.

I wiped away my tears, scooped up a handful of snow, and stuffed it into my mouth to dull the hunger.

Fine. Mom could keep her money. I didn't need her to survive.

The iciness cleared my head just enough for me to notice someone holding out a piece of bread.

Samantha froze in fear. She hadn't built her empire through talent alone. Even though Dad had always told me not to let hatred consume me, I quietly gathered evidence of her crimes whenever I had the chance. It didn't take long for Smanatha to realize what had happened. She glared at me. "It was you. Only you and Nathan could have accessed those files!"I smiled. "You catch on fast, Ms. Kelly."Her face twisted with rage. "How could you?! I'm your mother!"Every reporter immediately turned their cameras toward her. "What did you just say? He's your biological son?""Then who is Henry? Was everything in that video true?" The officers pushed through the crowd. "Police business. Please step aside." As she was led away, Samantha shot me one last venomous glare. "You'd better pray I get out of this unscathed. Otherwise, I'll make sure you'll pay for this mistake with your life! I am your mother, after all!"I smiled. "Did you forget that we've legally severed ties with eac

"It was my late father who protected you, who helped you rebuild your life. Since when did Ethan become the one who did all that?""Why is he ruining the mood?" Someone turned toward me and frowned. "Wait… doesn't he look familiar?""Hold on! Aren't you an illegitimate son? You actually had the nerve to show up?" In an instant, every eye turned toward me.Sally stepped in front of me. "I'm sorry. This is just a misunderstanding." "It's not."I gently pushed her aside. "But you got one thing wrong. The illegitimate son is the one standing beside the groom.""What a joke! Ms. Kelly already revealed the truth, and you're still denying it? Security! Throw him out!” Several guards immediately headed toward me. But before they could reach me, someone suddenly shouted, "Wait... what's this? Did they play the wrong video?" On the giant screen, the wedding slideshow that was supposed to showcase Ethan and Samantha's love story suddenly changed. The man standing beside Samanth

Looking at Samantha, I couldn't help but smile. My plan worked. The paperwork was processed quickly. The day I was officially removed from the family records, Samantha made her relationship with Ethan public. The announcement instantly shot to the top of the entertainment trending charts. The internet exploded. "I've waited so many years for Ms. Kelly to finally go public with the love of her life!" "We all knew they were secretly married, but seeing it confirmed is still so exciting!" "I'm rooting for Ethan and Samantha! Anyone who stands against them can fight me!" Henry became the center of attention at school as well.Ignoring them, I walked to my seat. The moment I sat down, one of Henry's friends burst out laughing. "Remember when a certain fake heir kept calling Henry 'the illegitimate child'? Now he's the one who got kicked out of the family. That's hilarious.""I always thought people who pretended to be someone they weren't only existed in novels. Imagin

Samantha paused. "But Adrian, you can't go through life without a father. What do you think of Ethan?" The words caught in my throat. I turned to her in disbelief. Keeping her eyes on the road, Samantha continued, "You need a father while growing up. Ethan and Henry are both kind and responsible. I've decided to marry him." My chest tightened. "Ms. Kelly, we're no longer connected in any way. But as an outsider, don't you think remarrying so soon after your husband's death is disrespectful?" "I'm doing this for your own good." "You're not my mother anymore!" Anger flared in my chest."You—" She frowned, her jaw tightening. After a moment, she let out a sigh. "Forget it. You're too emotional right now. We'll talk about this after your college entrance exams." I said nothing. The rest of the drive passed in silence. When the car stopped in front of the villa, the butler rushed out in a panic. "Ms. Kelly! Mr. Carter... he..."Samantha's face was drained of color. "Wh

Blood dripped from my shattered finger onto the floor. Everyone stared at me in shock. Sally reached out as if to stop me, but she was too late. I walked toward Samantha purposefully, leaving a trail of blood behind me."Today, I break this finger not only to repay the life you gave me, but also to honor my father—the man I'll never have the chance to repay." I slapped her hard. My bloodied hand left a crimson mark on her cheek. Samantha stood frozen, too stunned to react. With my right hand, I pulled 300 dollars from my pocket, took the scarf from the rack, and handed them to Sally. "Here's the 200 dollars you gave me, along with the money for the bread. Here's your scarf, too. I washed it. Now I don't owe you anything anymore." Without another word, I turned away. "Adrian…" Sally called after me, reaching for me, but I stepped out of her grasp. As I clutched my trembling left hand, I headed toward the hospital. Fortunately, the fracture could still be repaired. B

"So not only has he been pretending to be someone he's not, but he stole Henry's watch and even attacked him?"My eyes burned with fury. "Who's pretending? Henry was never part of this family! Ah!" One of Henry's friends punched me square in the face. "You've got some nerve! Ms. Kelly gave you a roof over your head, and Henry's always looked out for you. Instead of being grateful, you're making up lies about him?" Accusations came from every direction. Standing at the edge of the crowd, Sally frowned almost imperceptibly, looking at me with contempt. Mom looked at me. "Adrian, return the watch."I tightened my grip. "I won't… I'll never give away my father's keepsake to an illegitimate child!" "Enough!" The sports captain drove his fist into my face, knocking me to the floor. "I don't usually hit people, but you're asking for it!"Henry's done nothing but care about you, and this is how you repay that? You're the illegitimate child! Your father was the homewrecker!"
