Chapter 5

Author: Durian Lover
The moment I walked into the office, I was met with my coworkers' mocking looks.

One said, "He's just bitter that Julian has a rich, beautiful girlfriend. What a jealous guy."

"I knew being a workaholic can't be healthy. Living like that every day would mess anyone up," another coworker chimed in.

The room was silent, and every word felt like a stab.

Yet I said nothing.

When I glanced at Nina, I suddenly remembered how she used to defend me the moment anyone said even a few words against me.

But now, she didn't even look up.

The next second, Nina posted a lawyer's letter on her social media.

"Anyone who maliciously attacks or insults my boyfriend will not get away with it."

The attached image was a screenshot of the messages mocking Julian in private chats the past few days.

They were nowhere near as harsh as the words I was hearing now.

But Nina cared about what was said about Julian instead.

Inside the office, my superior got straight to the point. "You did well with the preparation for this event. Let Julian handle the rest."

That meant all the credit would go to Julian.

I clenched my fists. "Why?"

The moment I said it, I saw Nina walk in.

She was the daughter of the company's chairman.

I was so angry that I lost control and raised my voice.

"How can you do this to me? I worked myself to the bone on this for three whole months. You know that–"

"So what?" Unlike my angry tone, Nina's voice remained calm. "You cause Julian to get attacked online. He's upset."

I said, "So you're using your authority to punish me for him?"

Nina didn't deny it.

It felt like my throat had suddenly closed up, and I was forced to swallow all my anger and pain.

Back then, I was sexually harassed by a coworker.

I tried to resolve it with my superior and got nowhere. So I asked Nina to help me transfer to another department, even if it wasn't related to my area of expertise.

But Nina refused.

She said, "Wouldn't that be abusing my authority? My family values integrity, and that's exactly what my parents hate.

"If they found out, they would think badly of you."

Her words then made me feel so ashamed that my face burned. I thought I had crossed a line.

But now I finally understood.

Nina only cared because Julian was the one who got hurt.

Seeing me suddenly fall silent, Nina sighed helplessly.

"Would any of this have happened if you hadn't made that comment?" she said. "Julian is in a bad state. I can't leave him alone, so I won't be coming back for a while.

"Once he's feeling better, I'll…"

It seemed like she wanted to say more. But the moment she received Julian's call, she turned and left.

"Don't be scared, Julian. I'm on my way." Her anxious expression and the concern in her voice gave away how much she cared.

The last time I heard that tone was last year, when I fell off my bike.

For the first time, Nina looked like she was about to cry in front of me.

She had stammered, "What would I do if something happened to you?"

Back then, I was deeply moved.

Yet, I never thought that one day, Nina would care about someone else this way. Especially when that person was my best friend.

I stood there until Nina disappeared from sight.

After a while, I slowly removed my ID badge.

At the time, just to be closer to Nina, I turned down a better offer back home and applied to this company.

For seven whole years, I woke up early, worked late, and broke down countless times.

One thing kept me going. It was the thought that after getting promoted, I could finally stand proudly in front of Nina and her family.

"Look. I'm worthy of Nina."

But now, everything was in ruins.

Nina had destroyed it all.

After leaving the office, I took a cab home to get my things.

On the way, I happened to see the Mercedes Nina usually drove.

I saw her recording a voice message on her phone.

A strawberry cake sat safely on the passenger seat. It was Julian's favorite.

My phone chimed. It was a voice message from Nina.

I played it.

She said, "The situation at work is something you owe Julian for. But don't get too upset. Stay home and rest for now.

"I'll have someone come cook for you. You haven't been looking well lately, so you should take better care of yourself."

I listened to every word, but I didn't reply.

I blocked her and deleted her contact instead.

When I opened my eyes again, I was in Somerby, thousands of miles away.

-

Meanwhile, the company sent Nina a message.

[Ryan Larson resigned.]

Nina froze. She had expected Ryan to only take a short leave of absence.

A moment later, the cook called her too. "Mr. Larson's things are all gone. Are you sure he's coming back?"

The change of topic was so sudden that Nina couldn't react for a moment."What?" she asked.I looked her straight in the eye. "We've been together for seven years. Do you know I don't eat beans?"Nina was at a loss for words. Then, she said, "So what if I didn't know? It's such a small matter. Even if I didn't know before, I can pay more attention from now on."I laughed softly at myself for falling in love with someone like her."You always thought taking photos for someone else was no big deal. You thought the same about me not eating beans," I said. "But that's not how I see it."I looked at Vera standing not far away.I remembered our time at dinner. After Vera found out I didn't eat beans, she immediately reminded the server."If it's really such a small matter like you said, then why could someone I just met do it, while my own girlfriend couldn't?" I added. In our seven years together, Nina had never cared about this even once.Because it never mattered to her.Becaus

"Ryan."I looked up and saw Nina step out of the shadows. Her clothes were wrinkled, and her face was pale. She stared straight at me and said, "I waited for you all afternoon."Vera was about to get into the car. But when she saw Nina, she immediately reached out to pull me behind her.I smiled and shook my head. "It's okay. Let me handle this."This was between Nina and me. I didn't want to drag anyone else into it.Besides, I didn't want to rely on someone else for something this small. The next moment, I froze. So it turned out that, in my heart, what happened between Nina and me no longer mattered that much.Nina's eyes were teary and red-rimmed, yet her voice was filled with resentment."What did I do wrong for you to treat me like this?" she asked.I looked at her. "Nina, do you really not know?"Or maybe she just didn't dare think about it. Because once she did, she would realize she was the one who caused all of this. She was afraid she would regret it.Nina's br

I looked at Vera. She was beautiful, had a great figure, and came from money. She was the type many people would fall for, but I still shook my head."I don't feel the same," I said.To many people, love at first sight is the definition of romance.Maybe it was because I never felt secure growing up, so I had always been cautious.Even with Nina, I spent a year secretly liking her before I was sure she was truly the one I liked. Only then did I gather the courage to confess."I don't know why you like me," I added.Hearing that, Vera wanted to explain, but I cut her off.Vera froze for a moment, then quickly lowered her head and blinked. She looked a little pitiful, but I didn't waver. When it comes to love, you can't afford to be soft-hearted.Vera thought for a moment before asking, "Do you think I moved too fast?"I nodded and replied, "I'm sorry. But I still hope if someone likes me, it's not because she's driven by hormones or swept up in the moment."I want it to be

My eyes widened in shock. In my mind, Nina had always been aloof and proud. She once said that no one in this world was worth fighting for.If this had happened back then, I might have been touched or worried. But right now, all I felt was annoyance."Nina, are you crazy?" I yelled.Vera took the slap head-on and wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth. With a sneer, she lunged forward.Neither of them backed down, and the situation quickly spiraled out of control. After failing to stop them, I watched for a short while before turning around and leaving. At the same time, the two women realized what was happening and stopped.Nina panted. "Ryan!"I stopped, then turned around and walked toward her.The closer I got, the brighter Nina's eyes became. She even shot Vera a frosty glance.Vera remained expressionless, yet something about her looked strangely lonely.Nina pointed to the corner of her mouth, looking a little aggrieved. She said, "I'm bleeding."Nina was af

The next day, I put on the new printed shirt I had bought. It was a bold orange-red.The saleswoman said I was fair, and the color looked bright and lively on me.I didn't know if she meant it, but I didn't care.Back then, Nina took one look at my closet full of colorful clothes and clicked her tongue."Such tacky taste," she commented. So I changed my entire wardrobe to black, white, and gray just to keep up with her sense of style.I once gave everything I had to pursue Nina, thinking she was the person who would make me happy. But now that I look back, I realized she only made me lose who I was.So this time, I no longer wanted to care about what others thought. I wouldn't doubt or put myself down because of their words anymore.Even if my taste wasn't refined and my style wasn't for everyone.Vera sent me a message."I'm almost there. Take your time. There's no need to rush. I'll wait for you downstairs."I picked up my phone and left my apartment. But right after I s

The elevator doors opened.Someone was standing outside my door, radiating anger as though she had been greatly wronged. It was Nina.I had no idea how she found this place. Her expression was dark. "Who was the woman who brought you back just now?" she asked.I looked at her and replied, "That's none of your business."Nina laughed in disbelief. "It's none of my business?"She gritted her teeth and slowly approached me."You suddenly vanished and cut off all contact. And now you're messing around with another woman."When she spoke again, her tone turned icy and forceful. "Ryan, now you're telling me this has nothing to do with me? Did you forget you're my boyfriend?""What?" I laughed in anger too. "Did you forget that we've already broken up?"Nina looked confused.I laughed coldly. She hadn't taken what I said seriously.Nina knew she was in the wrong, but it took her a moment before finally coming up with an answer."But I never agreed," she said. "Besides, you're
