There was oppressive silence in the penthouse as I sat across from Damon, his jaw set hard and fingers interlaced together under his chin. I despised this tension between us, but I also knew that we could not just pretend everything was okay. Not after what had happened to Sebastian.

"You should've informed me about that," I breathed, not blaming but tenderly hurt. "That night in the ballroom, when you knew he was staring at us. You ought to have talked."

Damon sucked a breath in and stepped away from the dinner table. "I didn't know how to put it in a way that would not make it worse. I was trying to protect you."

I trailed behind him into the living room, my words firmer this time. "Secrets aren't keeping me safe. You said this—us—was different. But now I don't even know if anything you told me was true."

He confronted me, his face contorted in pain. "Every word I told you was true. But with Sebastian, it can't be done that easily."

I folded my arms. "Then make it easy."

The silence between us was more deafening than any scream.Killian stood in front of the penthouse doorway, rain pouring down his coat, his jaw clamped, his eyes fixed on mine like a man at war. I hadn't laid eyes on him for two days—not since Dante's secret had blown into our lives like a grenade. And now he was altered, as if he were holding something from me, as if he'd slept not at all, as if he'd come back from war and lost.I sat on the couch, a blanket thrown over me, clutching the folder with my father's last letter and the spy photos Dante had left behind."You knew," I whispered, not even aware of the sound of my voice.Killian's expression didn't shift. "I didn't know everything.""But you knew Dante was alive."His silence was all I needed to be certain.I rose, the blanket dropping from my shoulders. "You convinced me he was dead for six years. You let me mourn him. You made me—" My words splintered apart before I could get any farther."I was protecting you," he said f

The silence that followed was torture.Elena was frozen in the center of the vast foyer of the penthouse, her high heels clicking on the marble as she retreated. Her eyes were brimming with tears, her face wet and shattered."Say that again," she breathed, her voice barely above a whisper.Killian's eyes were hazy, stormy. "Victor wasn't with someone," he said. "There is someone else. Someone more intimate than we think."Her breast constricted as she struggled to understand. All of it—all these years, all this anger and lying—there was more? More cheating, more lying?"Who?" she shouted. "Who helped him?"Killian wasn't moving fast. He was moving slowly, opening a whiskey. His pace was too slow, too measured, as though he was having a hard time holding himself in check."Your brother," he finally said, his deep voice emerging in a low murmur. "Dante."Elena moved backward and punched. "No," she breathed. "Not possible. He's dead.""He's not," Killian said softly. "He's alive. And he'

The wind screamed as the speedboat sliced through the black water, a suds of foam trailing behind it. Elena clung to the railing of the boat, her rigid, spray-hardened fingers chilled against the metal. The private island was just visible in the distance—a dark shape looming in the foreground, its serrated cliffs and dark-green jungle splashes of light only where the thin ribbon of a moon made its passage above it.She had insisted on going alone.Killian had complained, naturally. So had Julia, Roman, and all the rest of the players in the game. But Elena knew her brother. If there was even a chance of reaching Dante—of pulling him back from the shadows—she had to attempt it in person, and she had to attempt it alone. The boat slowed as it passed into the strait inlet. Killian's contact had arranged a short course that took them in through the outer woods unseen. Elena jumped off the side of the boat and into the shallow water, boots splashing in the surf as she grabbed the small sat

Elena paced in the charred corridor outside Killian's office, her pulse racing. Outside the glass, the tempest raged. Rain buffeted the panes with maddened ferocity, and thunder boomed like a war cry above. She was stiff as a taut bowstring from crown to heel. She'd come to summon Killian to account for it all—everything she'd discovered about Victor, about Dante, and on matters Killian had shrouded in robes of power and lies. But at his door now, she stayed. Her hand hovered above the doorknob. Turn it, and everything would be changed forever. Again. She never reached the knocking point. The door creaked open, and he stood there—Killian Graves in a black T-shirt, sleeves rolled up high, dark eyes burning with fire and fatigue. He gazed at her for a moment. Then, silently, he moved aside."Come on inside," he urged softly. She went past him, rain-drenched and still seething. The door swung shut, and quiet was a barbed wire fencing them apart."You've been keeping me at arm's length,"

Storm rain continued unabated the entire night through. It pounded against Killian's penthouse glass walls relentlessly, pounded out an insistent rhythm—nature mimicking the hurricane which abducted Elena. She stood opposite the windowpane with arms huddled over her head, fists drawn up in a small X on top of her head. Her head whirled round and round, a jigsaw puzzle of shattered memory and blinding shock. The more that filtered out, the deeper only the obsession grew. And worse—worst of all—it was causing her to doubt every single thing she ever thought she knew about Killian Graves.Silently behind her, the sound of footsteps. She didn't need to turn to know it was him."You're not speaking," Killian whispered softly, his voice a hum of humming velvet that surrounded her. "That's typically the precursor to screaming at me or fleeing."She didn't move. "I've seen the file, Killian. The whole report of what occurred that night my father was killed. The photographs. The money transfe

  • Owned by Billionaire   Chapter 73 – Rebuilding What Was Broken

The boardroom soap opera had finally been lifted, but Sophia's threat circle still resonated in Elena's mind. Even as they rode the elevator down from the Graves Enterprises top floor, there was a strange silence between them. Not tense—but somber. Reflective. They had just emerged victorious from a war, but the wounds were fresh.Killian stood at her side, his spine rigid, his eyes locked on the descending elevator doors. His face didn't reveal much, but Elena knew—he was tired. Not really physically, maybe, but drained of emotion. For weeks, he'd battled on several fronts: defending his firm, defending Elena, dealing with betrayal by people he'd trusted. Now that Sophia had been eliminated—at least for the time being—there was room to breathe again. But breathing didn't come easily."I still feel like she's watching us," Elena whispered, breaking the silence.Killian's eyes cut to hers. "She probably is. People like Sophia don't just disappear. She'll try again, eventually.""So wha

  • Owned by Billionaire    Chapter 72 – The Breaking Point

The sun poured in through the penthouse high windows, sending slices of gold onto the marble floor. No warmth softened Elena's heart. Today. She perched at the end of the couch, back rigid, staring at the folder Sophia dropped. The proof was on the coffee table: voice messages, screenshots, photographs in front of her building. They all huddled around her with the single evil purpose: to bring down Killian and ruin the tiny relationship that was still intact.Killian strode the length of the living room behind her, phone against his ear, his expression grim."Get Jeremy to have the legal team work on it immediately. Get all the bugs tracked, inspect every device. And discover who installed those goddamn cameras in my office."His was a rough, commanding voice, but Elena could see the storm raging under. He was angry—and scared. She couldn't fault him. Their world was spinning out of control. He slammed the receiver down into its cradle, the silence between them still."She's trying to

Silence in Killian's penthouse was strangling.Elena leaned against floor-to-ceiling windows, eyes on city lights burning like hot stars. The tempest raging outside her mirrored the tempest inside her that had destroyed her from the inside out. Her fists were clenched at her hip, white knuckles, and Killian was at her back, ramrod straight, his eyes dark with rage and desperation."You should have told me," he growled, voice rough, husky. She swung slowly, swallowing the huge lump in her throat. "I couldn't. Not until I was sure.""You were sure enough to sneak behind my back and slip over to Victor DeLuca's?" Sadness crept into his voice, gruffer than she'd anticipated. Her eyes narrowed. "I did what I had to do to get some answers. You weren't going to give them to me.""I was trying to save you!" he snarled, closer to her now. "You think I had you in the dark because you weren't worth trusting? I had you in the dark because I didn't want you drawn in any further into this ghetto!
