6 - JETT'S POV

Dan shook his head, and he quickly glanced over his shoulder to make sure nobody was listening to our conversation.

"I heard he fired three top executives at his last company on his very first day," Dan whispered.

"Why the hell would he do that?" I asked while my stomach twisted into a painful knot.

"People say he hates incompetence, and he does not tolerate any mistakes from his staff," Dan replied.

I wiped my sweaty palms on the sides of my dress pants, and I looked down at the floor.

"And you are sure he asked for my specific file on Friday?" I asked again just to be absolutely certain.

"Yes, Jett, I saw the email from human resources with my own two eyes," Dan said with a serious tone.

"I... I am going to lose my job today, and I do not even have enough money saved for my rent," I muttered.

"Just keep your head down and do whatever he says without complaining," Dan advised before he walked back to his own desk.

I sat down in my chair, and I started organizing my workspace to look as neat as possible.

I aligned my black pens in a perfectly straight row next to my large computer monitor.

I stacked my printed financial spreadsheets into neat piles, and I made sure there were no loose papers anywhere on the desk.

I adjusted the height of my chair, and I smoothed the wrinkles out of my suit pants.

I checked my email inbox ten different times, but there were no new messages from upper management yet.

The large clock on the wall ticked loudly, and the steady sound grated against my highly sensitive nerves.

Brenda from the front reception desk walked over to my cubicle, and she held a large stack of printed daily schedules.

"You look like you are going to throw up right now, Jett," Brenda noted with a sympathetic frown.

"I feel like I am going to throw up, Brenda," I confessed while I adjusted my tight blue tie.

"He is just a man, so you need to calm down before he gets here," Brenda told me gently.

"Dan said he fires people for fun, and he specifically asked for my personal records," I argued.

"Dan exaggerates everything, and you are the best secretary in this entire building," Brenda reassured me.

She placed a printed schedule on my desk, and she offered me a small smile before walking back to the lobby.

I drank three cups of bitter black coffee, and the heavy dose of caffeine only made my hands shake worse.

I pulled up a blank document on my computer screen, and I pretended to type so I would look busy.

The digital bell above the elevators chimed loudly, and Brenda immediately stood up from her reception chair.

"He is in the building, and security just cleared him for the top floor," Brenda announced to the entire room.

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the massive office floor in an instant.

The clicking sounds of keyboards stopped, and every single employee turned their attention toward the heavy glass doors.

I held my breath, and I stared at the frosted glass while my heart hammered hard against my ribs.

The elevator arrived, and the thick glass doors slid open with a soft hiss.

A group of senior executives stepped out into the hallway first, but they quickly moved aside to clear a path.

A very tall man walked through the doorway, and the air in the room grew very quiet and still.

He wore a well-tailored black suit that fit his broad shoulders perfectly, and his dark hair was styled neatly back from his forehead.

I looked at his face, and I realized he looked very different from the stranger I met at the dark club.

His jaw was sharper, and his pale eyes held a cold authority that demanded instant respect from everyone in the room.

I had never seen this specific man before in my life, but a sudden, sharp shock traveled straight down my spine.

My stomach dropped to the floor, and a strange, intense heat spread through the center of my chest.

I did not understand why my body was reacting so strongly to a billionaire I did not even know.

The mysterious reaction made me feel dizzy, so I gripped the hard edge of my desk to keep my balance.

The senior executives tried to speak to him, but he ignored their voices and kept walking down the main aisle.

His heavy footsteps echoed against the white tile floor, and he did not even look at the other nervous employees.

Dan stepped forward and tried to hand him a printed budget report, but the tall man walked right past him without slowing down.

He turned the corner, and he walked directly toward my small cubicle at the far end of the row.

I swallowed the dry lump in my throat, and I forced myself to look up from my computer monitor.

The imposing man stopped right in front of my desk, and he crossed his arms over his broad chest.

He stared down at me with an intense focus, and I felt a heavy blush rise to my cheeks under his harsh gaze.

The entire office watched us in absolute silence, and I prayed that my voice would not shake when I finally spoke.

I opened my mouth to introduce myself, but he interrupted me before I could say a single word.

"You must be Jett Donovan. Bring your notepad into my office right now."
