Chapter 3

작가: Sunnys
At nine that night, the house was loud again.

Ella burst through the door with a designer shopping bag.

"Nora, look at the graduation dress Dad got me!"

Everyone behind her was carrying something. Only Mom handed me a canvas tote.

The bag was printed with a department store logo, a freebie given with purchases over a certain amount.

"You're always lugging books around. This will come in handy," Mom said.

Dad patted my shoulder approvingly.

"That's our Nora. You don't care about brands, and you don't need us wasting money."

I turned the canvas bag inside out. A receipt was still stuffed at the bottom.

The designer bag: twenty-four hundred dollars. The freebie line read zero.

I folded the receipt and slipped it back in. The word "why" stuck in my throat and wouldn't come out.

Ella looked at me and put on a worried expression.

"Nora, are you upset because of my presents?"

She knew perfectly well Mom and Dad were in the dining room, yet she deliberately raised her voice.

"How about I give you all my clothes? Mom and Dad already put eighty thousand dollars in my 529 account, and Derek promised to cover my twenty-thousand-dollar apartment deposit. I have everything I need."

The dining room went silent.

It was the first time I'd heard those numbers.

Mom walked out. The smile was gone.

"That's because Ella needs a social life in Newland, and she has medical expenses. Your life is simple. Less money is enough."

"How much is in my 529 account?"

Dad frowned, as if I'd asked something shameful.

"A little over eight thousand. You've never been into activities, and you don't have extra expenses."

Ten times as much.

I stared at the new bag at Ella's feet.

Its price tag was almost equal to everything they'd saved for me in eighteen years.

Mom was still talking about how I didn't like to spend money.

I opened my hands and realized my nails had dug into my palms.

Derek crossed his arms.

"You got into Newland. The family's already supported you for eighteen years. Plenty of students in this country take out loans on their own. Don't act like you've suffered some massive injustice."

"I'm not asking for your money."

"Then what's with the attitude?"

Ella immediately grabbed Mom's arm and spoke up on my behalf, her voice soft.

"Mom, don't blame Nora. She's just always had to compare herself to me."

Mom's gaze shifted the way I knew it would.

"You see what your sister has and suddenly you want the same thing. When are you going to grow out of this?"

Ella lowered her head, but her fingers slowly traced the gold clasp on the new bag.

In the living room mirror, she was watching me.

I unclenched my fists.

One more word and it would become fresh evidence that I was jealous of my sister.

Her gaze drifted past me and landed on the wooden music box on my desk.

"Nora, if you're really unhappy, I'll trade you my clothes for that music box. It would look so vintage in a dorm room."

That was the only thing my grandmother, Rose Whitmore, had left me.

When I was ten, the whole family took Ella to a theme park in Florida and dropped me off at Grandma Rose's.

the music box with money she'd saved from running a flea-market booth. She told me, "Whatever other people have, our Nora should have it too."Grandma had bought

Mom had already reached for the music box.

"It's just an old wooden box. Ella rarely asks for anything. Just let her have it."

Shane nodded.

"Once you get to Newland, I'll buy you a Bluetooth speaker."

Mom's finger pressed the winding key. The familiar melody played two notes.

The day Grandma was buried, I sat holding it all night.

Now everyone was waiting for me to nod, like they were waiting for me to finish something that had already been decided.

"Okay."

Ella let out a cheer and hugged the music box to her chest.

The melody cut off.

No one noticed that once I was back in my room, I opened a resale app.

I listed the pale-yellow dress, the old camera, the bookshelf, and everything else I could sell, one item at a time.

Sale notifications lit up the screen one after another.

I placed the acceptance letter from Lakecrest Tech on the top layer of my suitcase and slowly zipped it shut.

My parents deleted their social media posts.Lakecrest Tech then issued a statement confirming that my tuition, housing, and research funding were fully covered by the institution's scholarship, and that family members were not authorized to speak on a student's behalf. No one in the community believed the claim that they had "given everything to raise Nora" after that.A week later, the front desk told me a package had arrived from home.Inside was Grandma's music box.The spring had been wound too tight. The melody stuttered.Mom had tucked in a note."Ella gave it back to you. Dad asks every day when you're coming home. Your brother knows he was wrong. We're keeping your seat at the dinner table."I put the music box in a drawer and kept Grandma's photograph out.The note went into the shredder.A year later, Shane came to Lakecrest alone. He waited for me outside the lab building, a sleek cake box in his arms."Nora, I've thought about this for a long time.""After I got to Newland

Dad, Mom, Derek, Ella, and Shane. All five of them.Campus security had stopped them outside the auditorium. Several students were already filming. The moment Mom saw me, she rushed forward."You got a full scholarship to Lakecrest Tech. Why would you hide something this big from your own family?""Just tell everyone it was Mom and Dad who got you here. We'll delete the invoice right away, and we can start fresh as a family."She didn't ask if I'd settled in. She didn't ask how I'd spent the summer alone. The first thing she wanted was still for me to vouch for them.Ella grabbed Mom's arm, eyes red."Nora, I never meant to steal your interview. They made the mistake. Why are you blaming me?""When you heard the reporter say 'science competition' and 'full scholarship,' why didn't you correct them?"Her mouth opened and closed."All our lives, whenever you stood in front of me, you knew everyone would assume anything good belonged to you."Shane frowned."Nora, it was one party without

Over the next three months, I lived in Lakecrest Tech's summer housing.During the day, I worked as a paid research assistant in the materials lab. On weekends, my roommate, Summer Hayes, and I took the light rail to the beach. The scholarship covered tuition and housing. The research stipend was enough to live on.My first day in the dorm, Summer pointed at the fridge and asked if I had any dietary restrictions.I said I was allergic to peanuts. She immediately wiped down the top shelf and stuck a note reading "PEANUT-FREE" on the divider. The next day, the lab advisor asked what I drank."Iced black coffee, no sugar."At the afternoon meeting, a cup was sitting at my spot, my name written on the sleeve.I took a sip. Ice clinked against the sides. My eyes suddenly stung.I ducked my head and flipped through my lab notes, pretending the AC had gotten to my eyes. After my first research stipend came in, I tried on a sunset-orange dress at a shop near the beach.I stood in front of the

In the video, Mom stared hard at the confirmation letter."But Nora never told us."The reporter glanced at her."Her education records are hers. She's eighteen, and the school cannot disclose them without her consent."Someone in the crowd asked quietly, "If the party is for both Ashford daughters, where is Nora?"Mom answered on reflex. "Today is Ella's day."The words were out before she realized the camera was still rolling. The banner, the cake, the invitations, and the yard full of photos of Ella alone became the most damning evidence. The reporter put the folder away."We came to interview Nora. Since she isn't here, we won't intrude any further."The livestream comments were a blur."They didn't even know who won the prize.""Just said they never skimped on education, but the party doesn't even have Nora's name on it?""The sister knew it wasn't her and she still took the interview?"Dad's face went from red to white.Derek tried calling me immediately. When the plane touched down in Lakecrest, West Coast sunlight was streaming through the palm trees.I had barely turned my phone on when a flood of messages from my high school classmate Megan Brooks poured in."Nora, your family's party just went off the rails.""They actually thought the reporter was there for Ella.""You have to watch this video."The backyard was packed with guests.Ella wore a silver graduation cap and stood beside a cake that read "Newland University."The local paper's reporter held out the microphone to her."We understand that an Ashford graduate has earned the state science competition's highest honor and received a full scholarship to a top engineering school. Could you tell us what made you successful?"Hesitation flickered across Ella's face.Mom had already jumped in."She's been exceptional since she was little. Piano, debate, socializing. We never had to worry about a thing."Dad added for the camera, "We've never skimped on education. Everything she's

The day before the graduation party, the backyard was hung with purple and silver balloons. The banner read:"Congratulations, Ella Ashford! Next Stop: Newland University!"Mom ordered a three-tiered cake. Dad rented string lights and a champagne tower.Relatives, neighbors, and church friends from the community had all received invitations. The invitations featured only Ella's photo."Where's my dress?" I asked.Mom was fixing Ella's hair and didn't look up."Today is Ella's day. Just wear a white blouse. It'll be easier for handing out drinks and taking photos."Derek pushed a case of soda to my feet."You don't like attention anyway. This is perfect for you."I picked up the case. The cardboard edge dug into my arms. Not one person asked if the box was heavy. They were all busy adjusting Ella's hem.Derek handed me the laptop."While you're at it, put together a video of Ella's photos from over the years."In the album: her first steps, her first recital, her first time on stage.
