Chapter Five

Alan’s POV

The doctor’s words echoed inside my head long after he stopped speaking.

“She’s pregnant.”

For a moment, I honestly thought I had heard him wrong. Pregnant? Hazel?

The room became so quiet that even the sound of our breathing seemed loud.

I stood completely still, staring at the doctor as if waiting for him to laugh and tell us it had all been some terrible mistake.

He didn’t, his face remained serious.

My mind refused to accept what I had just heard. Hazel was pregnant. How?

The only thing I remembered about that night was drinking far too much during my birthday celebration before leaving the banquet hall because I wanted a moment of silence.

Everything after that was nothing but broken pieces.

I remembered opening a door, I remembered seeing someone.

Then… Nothing.

I slowly turned my head toward Hazel.

She was sitting on the examination bed with her head lowered, tears silently falling onto her lap. She didn’t try to defend herself. She didn’t argue with the doctor.

She simply cried, thesight unsettled me for reasons I couldn’t explain.

Before I could say anything, Violet suddenly laughed, It wasn’t the cheerful laugh I knew, It was sharp and cold

Almost hysterical. “No.” She shook her head over and over again. “No! That’s impossible!” She pointed an accusing finger at Hazel.“You’re lying!”

Her voice rose until it filled the entire room. “You shameless liar!”

Hazel didn’t even look up, she continued crying quietly.

Violet took another angry step forward.“You must have slept with another man!” Her eyes burned with rage. “And now you’re trying to put your child on Alan because you know he’s the future Alpha!”

Hazel slowly shook her head. “I…”

“You don’t even deserve to speak!” Violet screamed so loudly that I flinched. “I treated you like family! I welcomed you into my life, and this is how you repay me?”

Hazel’s shoulders trembled. “I never…”

“Shut up!” Violet’s patience finally snapped. She raised her hand high into the air and rushed toward Hazel. “You wicked girl!”

Everything happened so quickly that I didn’t have time to think.

My body moved before my mind could catch up.

I reached out. My fingers wrapped tightly around Violet’s wrist just before her hand could strike Hazel’s face, the slap never landed.

Silence returned to the room. Violet slowly turned to look at me.

Her eyes were filled with shock. “Alan…”

She whispered my name as though she didn’t recognize me anymore.

I looked down. My hand was still holding her wrist. Why?

I hadn’t planned to stop her, I hadn’t even thought about it.

Yet somehow… I had moved without hesitation.

A strange feeling stirred deep inside me, then I heard it.

A low growl echoed inside my mind, my wolf.

It was restless, uneasy and angry.

Don’t let anyone hurt her.

The voice was so clear that I frowned.

What was happening? Why was my wolf reacting like this?

It didn’t make any sense.

I believed Hazel had betrayed Violet, I believed she had taken advantage of me while I was drunk.

So why… Why did every instinct inside me refuse to watch her get hurt?

I immediately released Violet’s wrist and took a small step backward. “I…”

The words refused to come, even I didn’t understand what I had just done.

Violet looked at me with tears gathering in her eyes. “You stopped me.” Her voice trembled with disbelief. “You actually stopped me… because of her.”

She searched my face, hoping for an answer, I couldn’t give her one because I didn’t have one.

The doctor finally broke the heavy silence. “Miss Violet.” His calm voice filled the room. “I understand that you’re upset, but please calm down.”

Violet looked at him angrily. “Calm down?”

“How can you expect me to calm down after hearing something like this?”

The doctor sighed. “There is something else you should know.”

Everyone turned toward him.

He folded his hands behind his back before speaking again. “Based on Hazel’s condition and the examination I just completed, I can estimate when the child was conceived.”

A strange feeling settled in my stomach.

The doctor continued. “The pregnancy began about Two months ago.”

My heart skipped a beat.

Two months…My birthday.

The same night everything had happened.

Two months ago, tharnight.

Broken memories suddenly flashed through my mind.

I remembered stumbling through a hallway. I remembered opening the wrong door.

Hazel’s frightened face appeared before me.

She had rushed forward just as I lost my balance.

She caught me before I fell.

Then… Her scent.

It had surrounded me.

My wolf had reacted immediately.

Then another memory appeared.

Hazel calling my name.

Trying to help me stand.

Telling me I should return to my room.

Then… A kiss.

My breathing became uneven.

The memory disappeared as quickly as it had come.

I grabbed my forehead.

A sharp pain shot through my head. “Damn…”

I squeezed my eyes shut.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t remember anything after that.

Everything beyond the kiss remained hidden behind a thick wall of darkness.

I slowly lowered my hand and looked toward Hazel.

She still hadn’t looked at me, her tears continued falling silently.

I took one slow step toward her, then another.

Finally, I stopped in front of the examination bed.

“Hazel.”

She slowly lifted her head. Her eyes were red from crying.

For the first time since that morning Two months ago, I looked directly into them without anger, only questions filled my mind now.

I swallowed hard. “Tell me the truth.”

She didn’t speak.

I took another breath. My voice became quieter. “Did we…” The words caught in my throat. I forced myself to continue. “Did we spend the night together?”

Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.

She looked at me for several long seconds before giving the smallest nod.

“Yes.”

There was no anger in her voice.

No accusation, no attempt to make me feel guilty, only sadness.

“You came into the guest room by mistake,” she whispered. “I tried to help you because you could barely stand.”

She wiped away another tear.

“You were very drunk.” Her voice broke. “I told you to go back to your room.” She looked down at her trembling hands. “But… You kissed me.”

The room became silent again.

“I didn’t know what to do, I was scared. I never wanted any of this to happen.” She closed her eyes. “When I woke up the next morning… everyone had already decided I was guilty.”

I couldn’t look away from her.

Her voice didn’t sound like someone trying to make excuses.

It sounded like someone who had been carrying a burden alone for Two months.

My wolf became restless again. This time, the feeling was even stronger. Protect her.

The command echoed inside my head. Protect her.

I clenched my fistt, nothing made sense anymore.

If the child was really conceived that night… If the memories I had were real…

If Hazel was telling the truth…

Then… I stared at her in disbelief. “If this child is really mine…”

Chapter TwentyThe Woman in the PortraitHazel's POVThe final fitting took longer than the first, mostly because the seamstress had decided the bodice needed adjusting twice more than she'd originally promised. I stood on the small platform while she circled me, pins between her teeth, muttering about seams I couldn't see anything wrong with."Almost finished," Mabel said from her chair near the window, offering me a small, encouraging smile.I nodded, though my arms had begun to ache from holding still, and let my eyes wander around the room instead of thinking too hard about the dress itself. That was how I noticed the portrait hanging above the mantle, one I hadn't paid attention to during my last visit. It showed a group of women from an older generation, dressed in the formal style the household still used for important gatherings. I recognized a much younger version of the current Alpha's late wife near the center, and beside her, slightly turned toward the artist, a woman I di

Chapter NineteenThe Name That Didn't ExistAlan's POVCorbin lived at the edge of the pack lands, in a cottage surrounded by a garden he clearly spent most of his retirement tending. He was an older man, his back slightly bent from decades of service, and when he opened the door and saw me standing behind Desmond, he went pale enough that I thought he might refuse to let us in at all."Young Alpha." He bowed low. "I didn't expect you to come yourself.""Desmond said you wanted to speak to me directly," I said. "So I came."He hesitated, glancing between us, then stepped back to let us inside. His cottage was small and tidy, a fire already burning low in the hearth. He didn't offer us seats right away. He stood near the window instead, wringing his hands like a man trying to decide how much of himself he was willing to spend on the truth."I've kept quiet about that night for two years," he said finally. "I told myself it wasn't my place to question what happens among the family. A st

Chapter EighteenThe Keeper of the Guest WingAlan's POVI hadn't slept well since Desmond told me about the ring. I kept turning the same details over until they wore smooth in my mind and stopped meaning anything at all. A soft voice. A silver ring with a pale stone. A hand on my shoulder I'd spent two years assuming belonged to the woman I loved.Desmond found me in the study before I'd finished my first cup of coffee."There's something you should see," he said, closing the door behind him.He set a ledger on my desk, one of the household inventories kept by the steward's office. "This tracks who requested private deliveries to guest rooms during large gatherings. Wine, food, anything outside the standard service.""And the Hunter's Moon gathering is in here?""It is." He turned to a marked page. "Someone requested a bottle sent up separately that night, listed under 'special reserve, guest wing, east corridor.' No name attached to the request. Just a steward's initials confirming

Chapter SeventeenThe Ring in the DrawerHazel's POVMabel found me in the small sitting room off my bedroom, folding linens I didn't actually need to fold, the kind of task I gave my hands when my mind wouldn't settle."You don't have to do that," she said, setting down a tray of tea. "That's what I'm here for.""I don't mind." I set the last cloth aside. "It gives me something to do besides think."She poured two cups without asking, then sat across from me instead of leaving the way she usually did. "You've had a lot thrown at you these past weeks. It's no wonder your hands need something to hold on to.""Did you know my mother?" The question came out before I'd fully decided to ask it. "You've been here a long time."Something softened in her face. "I knew her a little. She used to bring you into the kitchen when you were small, before your father put a stop to it. Said a Gamma's daughter shouldn't be underfoot with the help." She smiled faintly. "You never seemed to mind the kitch

Chapter SixteenThe Wine That Wasn't HisDesmond's POVThe servant records were kept in a small room off the west archive, ledgers dating back further than I had patience for. I found the guest list for the Hunter's Moon gathering within the hour, along with the staff assignments for that night.A young man named Teo had been listed among those serving the guest wing. I didn't recognize the name, which meant nothing on its own, but when I asked one of the senior stewards where he'd gone, the man frowned like he was trying to remember something he'd deliberately let himself forget."Teo," he said slowly. "He left not long after that gathering. A few weeks, maybe less.""Left on his own?""That's the odd part. He never said goodbye to anyone. One day he was carrying trays through the east hall, and the next his room was empty. Someone said he'd taken a position with a pack up north." He shook his head. "No one saw him pack. No one saw him go."That was enough to make me uneasy. People w

Chapter FifteenThe Woman Who Warned HerDesmond's POVRuth's hands had gone still in her lap, but her eyes stayed fixed on the window, as though she expected someone to be standing there."Tell me about her," I said gently. "Anything you remember. Even small things."She was quiet for a moment, gathering herself. "Her voice was soft. Educated. Not the kind of voice that belongs to a servant or a warrior's wife." She paused. "She wore something that smelled of jasmine. Strong enough that I noticed it before I noticed her face.""Did you see her face clearly?""It was dark. She stood just outside my door and never stepped into the light." Ruth shook her head. "But I remember her hands. She wore a ring on her right hand, silver, with a small stone I couldn't name in that light. Blue, maybe. Or gray."I kept my voice even, though something in my chest had gone tight. "When did she come to you?""Four days after the gathering. Before anyone outside the family knew what had happened betwee
