ROMAN.

I’m still heated up, still in need of more from Monica. The scent of her arousal is still strong on my lips, making it hard for me to shake off the lust burning in my veins even as I make my way to the war room.

I would rather meet her in her new room and maybe finish what I started, but I need to teach her a lesson. It’s going to be torture to me as much as it is torture to her, I’m sure of that.

I arrive at the war room expecting it to be just Corrin and maybe Janus in there, but to my surprise, all twelve Elders are in attendance.

But much to my disappointment, Hyden is also there, smiling at me like a hyena.

I take a long huge breath of exhaustion. "With all due respect, which is basically none, I would like you to leave, brother."

A handful of the Elders have to contain their smiles. Hyden was never really popular. It's no secret that he likes to meddle.

And now he has the gall to look at me with outrage as though he wasn't aware of what he was doing. "This is how you choo

MONICA."Come on, you got this!" Padma urges as she puts her hands on my shoulders and tries to tackle me. "This is going to be easier for you in the long run. All you need to do right now is to take me down.""I feel like you're trying to go easy on me," I mutter, but she laughs."Oh, believe me, I'm not."As though on cue, she grips me harder and slams me down on the soft grass. I gasp as pain travels down my spine. I know that I'm strong enough not to incur that much damage, but it still stings. I just don't know what stings more: the actual slamming or the defeat that comes with it.I always knew that Padma was strong. I've seen her haul my stuff like it's nothing. I've seen her move my furniture like it's the most natural thing on earth. What I didn't expect was that she would be skilled in fighting too. She hid it so well with her delicate little dresses and her giggles. I fully thought we would be at least even in strength even though she's miles ahead in terms of skill. But I

ROMAN.Two days has passed since all of the recent events, and yet in many ways, I still feel stuck."The funeral is already set," August tells me as we make our way to the balcony with the perfect view of the training grounds. "The body has been prepped for cremation. Everyone has been incredibly... supportive.""And by supportive, you mean?""They know that Hyden has never been the good guy." August looks conflicted. "Look. I have never heard anyone say that he was murdered in cold blood. Everyone understands that it was self defense. No one has talked about Monica that way."I know that he's not lying. Over the past couple of days, many people have come to the palace with flowers, but not for Hyden. For Monica. They’ve expressed their sympathy over what happened, and it's helped a lot. Monica has become a little bit more sure of herself, more eager to train. More eager to move on.That's actually where we're heading now, to see how she's doing in training.August and I arrive, watc

MONICA.The air around Roman and I thickens, filled with a charged kind of energy as he lays me down on the bed. He positions himself next to me, propping his body on his elbow as he deepens the kiss. His hand is bunched up in my hair. My hands roam his chest, grazing his skin with my palms and finding his heartbeat. It's strong. Fast. As though he just ran a marathon. I don't know why, but it makes my stomach flutter.I pull away just enough to look into his eyes. "We don't have to. Not right now. Not after everything.""But I want to." His voice is as soft as the fingertip he's trailing down my hip. "I love you, and nothing changes that. Nothing will ever change that. I'll always want you, Monica."He kisses me again, and I fully expect him to touch me. Rub me. Conquer me like he always does. But the fingertip he's trailing down the curve of my hip doesn't become a full hand. It's just the ends of his fingers, skimming my skin. Even his kiss is soft, caring, like he thinks I'm fragi

MONICA.“Roman.”The name sounds strange on my lips before I can even try to shift back into my Human form. I step away from Hyden and I realize that he really is dead. His eyes are open in fear, wide and glassy, staring at nothing. A pool of his own blood surrounds him like a halo, like wings, seeping into the grass and the dry dirt. The smell wafts into my nose, invading my lungs like some kind of putrid gas that’s meant to make me feel sick. And I am sick. I can’t believe what I just did.Now Roman is standing closer. He doesn’t keep his wide eyes off me. I can’t read his expression; my vision is not meant to see the finer details of his face. But I don’t need to have that ability. I can sense his fear, his judgment.“You killed him,” he says again, his voice fainter this time. “Hyden….”I can’t speak. I’m still in my huge, lumbering wolf form. All that escapes my lips is a whimper, a whine.Roman shakes his head like he doesn’t want to believe it. “Monica, how did you….”I back of

MONICA."Let go," the voice in my mind insists. "Let it all go, and let me.""Let you what?" I mutter, making the mistake of saying it out loud and making Hyden laugh. I wheel around, not realizing that he already caught up with me. I have no place to back into, and my heart is just roaring in my ears. I mistakenly take one step back, and my foot slides off the rock. The wind whips around us, and fear strikes my chest. I have no choice but to retake the step that I withdrew, crashing into Hyden. He catches me in his arms, squeezing my waist. He has surprising strength for someone that thin, especially when I can see that his legs look like they're withering. Still, he stands perfectly still, his fingers digging into my skin. I take a deep breath, putting my hands on his chest to push him, but he won't budge. He stands his ground, grabbing my wrists next and holding me still. I try to struggle but his force makes my wrists almost pop."Let me go," I pant, lights cutting through my vi

ROMAN.My uneasiness is at its peak, like a coiled snake at the pit of my stomach waiting for the right time to strike.“How long will it take them to open the fucking door?” I ask August, pacing the floor. We’ve been standing in front of the temple for a while now. I’m almost sure that it hasn’t been long since we arrived, but I can almost swear that it’s been an hour or so. I just can’t wait that long, not when Monica’s life is on the line like this.“I don’t know,” August says, staring up at the double doors. “I’ve alerted them before we even came here. They know that the King is coming and that it’s an urgent matter. Roman, I just want to say that I’m so—”The rest of his words are brought into a halt when all of a sudden, one of the doors swing open. An old man wearing a golden robe and a white cap peeks out, narrowing his eyes when he surveys me and August.“The Royal Healer, right?” He tilts his head in confusion as his gaze lands on me. “And the King. I can’t say I expected bo
