Let go Finn!
—- Let go!
Come!
—- Follow me!
Remember who you used to be! Come Finn!
You know you want it!
Just one more time! What's the harm?
Finn tried to escape his nightmare, clawing and screaming. He was reduced to begging, "Please let me go! Release me. This is not my life anymore. I want to live!"
The nightmare continued down a darker path. He could smell the alcohol and saw the lines of powder everywhere. Calling him. Pulling him in. It felt too real.
He was drowning in his own tears and was sucked down another black hole and was slammed against a wall. A strong arm pinned him to the wall and he felt tremendous pain as glass shards attacked every inch of his exposed body.
Screaming in pain and weak from the frenzy of the dream, he woke up curled in a ball on the floor in Lili's intensive care room. He was breathing heavy and he felt the pounding of his chest.
He felt someone near as he came out of the deep sleep he was in and heard a soft voice, "Mr. Finnegan, you were having a nightmare. It's ok."
Finn tried to wipe away the cobwebs in his brain and said, "Yeah, it was really bad."
"I was just bringing in the recliner so that you could sleep here in her room. Glad I found you when I did."
"Yeah, me too!" Finn whispered. Gaining a bit of strength as he stood up he said, "Thanks! I really appreciate the chair."
The nurse looked at him with a mixture of pity and fascination. Before she left she stated, "Your welcome. If you need to shower, I will be at the nurses station and can let you into the family shower room. Oh, my name is Elle, should you need anything."
He politely thanked her and figured that she was right. He would need to shower soon, especially after being on the hospital floor.
Standing alone, Finn ran his hands through his black hair and fleetingly thought, 'I need to be careful.' He felt an impending doom hover over him as the residual dream effects lingered in his thoughts. He was scared of the man he used to be and the utter destruction he could cause in Lili's life.
He took his boots off and placed his flannel on top of his duffel bag before sitting back down next to Lili and he started to tell her stories from when he was a kid growing up just outside of Philly.
He squeezed her hand as he continued, "Not sure the last time I walked through Reading Terminal but I think you would love all of the smells and the cheesesteaks, oh and the pretzels. I can smell them now. Oh, and the fresh donuts, made right there." He paused and laughed as he went on, "It's crazy, but the line wraps around the counter to get those things. It's so worth it. You could eat three and put on ten pounds and beg for more."
He looked at her face and brushed her hair away from her face and whispered, "I know the doctors say to keep talking to you, but it seems so foolish. I wish I could change the events of today and take your place now. This, it just, … Well, damn it! This hurts too much."
He wiped tears away for the thousandth time today. What was wrong with him?
He pushed through and mentioned another of his favorite spots, "And at Christmas, well the city is magical with its lights and outdoor market places, potato pancakes and Glühwein . Yeah, it's gross but a tradition worth suffering through every year. Hmmm! Roasted nuts and the ice skating rink. Vendors with their wares. It's bitter cold, but if we were together, well…". His voice trailed off.
The wall clock indicated that it was 3 am and he figured that he should try to get some sleep. He plugged his phone in to charge it and decided to throw his shorts on, before he sat in the recliner. Suddenly fear enveloped him, as he thought about falling asleep again. What if the nightmares return?
Not ready to chance his nightmares so soon, he flipped through his phone playing games and reading the news until his eyes grew so heavy, he stopped fighting it and leaned back in the recliner and let sleep take over.
His body was so exhausted that it didn't matter to his 6'2" frame that the recliner was too small and uncomfortable. The damage to his body and mind needed to rest and outweighed the non ideal sleeping conditions.
Elle checked in on both of them prior to her shift ending, looking on with envy, wishing a man would look at her so lovingly; the way Finn looked at Lili. Lost in her thoughts, she lingered in the doorway and watched both of them for a moment longer, when Lili's alarms started blaring.
She was flatlining!
Elle called for back up and woke Finn, saying, "We need the room. Please wait outside."
Finn could do nothing but watch as the doctors and nurses fought to save Lili's life. Seconds turned to minutes that felt excruciatingly like hours twisting into days.
His adrenaline was pulsing through his body and he could feel his heart jumping around in his chest. Wave after wave of anxiety crashed over him as he watch the screen, small blip and flat line followed by the same pattern over and over again.
He held his breath and wiped more tears away from his eyes. She wasn't even his but he promised he'd look after her and in this moment he was failing miserably.
Finn watched in horror from the corridor and saw hoses and tubes, syringes and he heard words and commands that he couldn't comprehend. It was all chaos in his mind and he was trying to stay focused. He couldn't follow their progress to understand if she would make it through.
Finn was lost in the moment.
It was too much for him to take in. Closing his eyes, for the second time in forever, he prayed to a God he struggled with. He prayed to a God he couldn't comprehend but needed. He begged for her life and for her to come back to him.
He didn't stop praying and crying.
Finn's forehead was resting on the glass window, separating him from her. His eyes were tightly sealed but were leaking constant tears while he remained in prayer. The noises surrounding him faded as he drew deeper into his thoughts, temporarily finding a quiet peace.
He wasn't sure how long he stood waiting for Lili to breathe but Elle placed her hand on his shoulder and said, "Mr. Finnegan. She's stable now. When the nurses finish packing up the equipment you can go back in."
Dumbfounded. He lost his composure again, crying even harder and just nodded to her. He couldn't even ask Elle what had happened. He remained speechless as they cleared out of her room and waited until he could sit back down next to her.
He sat there and played with her hair and held her hand. He whispered, "I can't lose you! Stay with me Lili."
He stood up and gently kissed her forehead and brushed her cheek, saying again, "Stay with me! Stay with me."
"Stay with me!"
Elle just started her shift and was making her way around the floor to catch up on her patients when she saw Finn walk up to her with his duffel bag."Mr. Finnegan are you leaving?" Elle asked."No, but I was hoping you would let me into the family shower room so that I can shower and shave." he replied.Elle pulled out her keys and smiled at him saying, "Sure, right this way. While you are in there, I will make sure to keep two eyes on Lili for you."He let a small smile flicker across his face before saying, "Much appreciated." He closed the door and showered as quickly as humanly possible. He was thankful that Billy took him several outfits and he wondered when he would have to give in and go home to get more clothes. He dreaded that thought of leaving her for a few hours. Walking back to the room, he saw Billy standing outside waiting patiently for him."Billy, what's up?" Finn asked.Billy took off his h
Ten days later Finn was exhausted as he walked into Lili's room and took off his suit jacket and started to undo his tie. He cursed under his breath at Hal and his violent tirade. How could anyone impart such vindictiveness to a beautiful creature like Lili? And to kill Jude! What was his reason? He was in mourning for Jude. He was such a good friend, quiet, trustworthy and loyal. He was one of the first to connect with Finn when he stumbled across this small town, out of sorts, lost with the need to be found. Jude met him where he was; broken and lost. He was a faithful friend and never judged his past. He was the one that suggested that Finn stay for a few months and he would introduce him to Russel over at the ranch, recommending that he should work for the summer as a ranch hand. That job turned into his current security position and taught him the value of hard work and honesty.&n
Finn kept rubbing her hand and whispering encouragements to her as she started to stir. He looked at Dr. Berkeley for affirmation that things were moving in the right direction and he gave Finn a thumbs up. Elle walked in and stood in the doorway, monitoring her progress. The monitors were showing increased activity and her eye movements were increasing. Finally, Lili let out a groan and twisted a bit in bed. She was still sound asleep but Finn was ecstatic, smiling ear to ear. Leaning over Lili, Dr. Berkeley checked her heart and stepped back, pleased with her progress so far. More restlessness and another groan. Her eyelids fluttered and almost opened before she settled in again. Her covers had come undone so Finn straightened them out and pushed her unruly hair out of the way. Just as he was sitting back down he heard, "Finn, Finn, where am I?" "Lili, oh my Lili. You're in the hospital. D
You're safe now. You're safe now. His words swirled around her head as she continued to hold his hand. Lili thought, 'How could I be safe?' Even with Hal dead, she was traumatized by the abuse over the last three years. It could take a lifetime to overcome. Lili looked into Finn's eyes and politely smiled and patted his hand condescendingly and said, "I don't think that I'll ever feel safe with any man, even you, but I need to trust someone." She watched as Finn hung his head down and his forehead rested on her hands and she heard him whisper, "Please, Lili. Please give me a chance to take care of you. I will do my best to nurse you back to health." She remained silent and pulled her hand away from him. Truth be told… his touch terrified her because she trusted him. Why? There was no explanation, but she trusted him. She closed her eyes and started to cry. The tears flowed s
Several nurses rushed to Finn's side and one of them managed to revive him. After an initial screening he was whisked in a wheelchair down to the ER and they insisted on doing a full work up on him.He protested that he was fine and was just tired and hungry. Doctor Hill finally agreed that Finn was alright but insisted that he have a full meal and a few hours sleep before he would release Finn to care for Lili. When Doctor Hill left and he was alone, Finn mumbled, "It's okay doc! It's ok. I am checking out and going back to Philadelphia. I know when I am not wanted."He barely managed to speak the words as sleep took over his exhausted brain. Finn slept for seven hours and no one in the hospital dared interrupt his sleep. Finn was unaware of his newfound reputation; local hero. He had avoided the newspapers and the gossip stories that they wrote about Finn and his drug addicted past and his new life. &nbs
Finn watched as Lili was getting restless sitting in bed. She was squirming and had yanked the sheets out and was making a mess. She whined, "I need to walk. "Elle is coming in a few minutes and she will show me how to properly help you out of bed and hold you as you walk. Be patient, my sweet." Finn said as he tried to calm her down."At least help me swing my legs over the side of the bed," she begged. He looked her in the eyes and in a dramatic fashion rolled his eyes and fluttered his long eyelashes at her. She laughed at his silliness and said, "Finn, I am glad we worked things out.""Hmmm, me too," he mumbled as he kissed her forehead. Finally, he decided to help her swing her legs over the edge of the bed for the first time and he couldn't stop smiling when he saw the look of excitement on her sweet face. Just then, Elle walked in and asked, "What are you two up to?
It took several hours to calm Lili down from the latest tragedy in her life, but Finn stayed by here side and held her the entire time. As the tears slowed down, she asked Finn, "Can you go and see if there's anything left? Take pictures. I need to know." Finn was worried that this was not a good idea but finally agreed to go in the morning and discuss the damage with the fire marshall and Billy. In the meantime, he was able to get Lili to calm down and sleep for a few hours. Once he verified that she was asleep, he went to the visitor's waiting room and called Russel. "Hey Finn! How are you and Lili managing?" Finn let out a small laugh before he said, "Well, two steps forward and ten steps backwards." "What happened?" Russel asked with concern in his voice. He knew Finn well enough that something wasn't right. "Russ, Lili's house was burned to the grou
Finn opened the car door and held his hand out to help Lili get out of the car safely. He noticed her expression and wasn't sure if she was going to like this place but once she stood in his embrace she said, "Before we go in, let's just stand here for a second. I want to take this moment in." She was right, this was a big and momentous occasion for them. They would be living together. Two strangers, getting to know each other without defined boundaries. He was scared but tried not to show it. He wrapped his right arm around her as they looked up at the red brick farmhouse with it's inviting wrap around porch and oak rocking chairs. It was really nice and way more than they needed but it was a safe place and they would make it work. "It's nice. Finn, it's nice." Lili was so excited and her innermost feelings were surprisingly positive and she wasn't afraid of Finn and being alone with him. H
