Jasper's POV

I stood on the balcony, holding a cigarette between my fingers as I puffed out a mouthful of smoke.

Davina’s words reverberated in my mind. I had to give myself a break.

I stared at the beautiful scenery before me. The cool breeze felt comforting. Deep Paw Claw was always feared, but every attempt to secure great benefits for my pack almost left me at the point of death.

There was always an ambush.

Another attempt on my life.

At first, I thought it was nothing but a coincidence, but it had been happening frequently.

It seemed like someone was in the shadows, watching my every movement and knowing my every move.

It felt like whoever it was could even predict my next move.

But who could it be?

With a sigh, I took another long drag from the cigarette and puffed the smoke out. The wind carried it away.

“Alpha,” Flinn called out as he got closer.

Without turning, I remained rooted to my spot, placing my hands on the railing and concentrating on the scenery before me.

“What did you find out?” I questioned.

He moved closer and handed me a document. My brows knitted into a tight frown. “I have no time to go through that.”

“We conducted a thorough search, but it was fruitless. We couldn’t find anything about Miss Davina.”

I raised my eyebrows. This was surprising. He had always referred to her as the Imperial Physician.

“Oh,” I replied, processing the information. “What about her pictures?”

“I showed them to every pack besides ours, but they’ve never seen or heard of her before.”

I drew in another mouthful of smoke. The atmosphere turned silent for a moment. I paid attention as I listened to the names of the packs he had searched. They were all huge and mighty packs.

“Search through the smaller packs,” I commanded.

“Do not return until you’ve found something,” I said coldly.

He bowed his head slightly in respect and was about to leave.

“Have you found Clinton?” I questioned.

Flinn halted his movement.

“Yes, we did. We found his body. Someone had ripped his heart out. We couldn’t save him.”

My hands around the railing clenched tightly. The veins in my hands bulged as if they were going to burst.

Clinton was one of my loyal Betas, the best among them. He was one of the fiercest and strongest among the five most skilled Betas.

During the ambush, he had sacrificed himself.

“Find whoever is responsible for the ambush and give them the same treatment.” My voice was filled with resentment and pain.

“Yes, Alpha,” he said before leaving immediately.

My chest tightened, and I felt a pang of pain in my heart. In just a few months, I had lost more men than I had ever lost in a battle.

Someone was killing my men and being a coward, hiding deep in the shadows.

The pack I had fought so hard to protect was gradually crumbling right before my eyes. I was losing my Betas, my elite warriors, and even my pack members.

My pack members were always living in fear. They said it was because I had remained alone as an Alpha without my Luna. Some said it was because of a curse.

I sighed in frustration, staring at the cigarette. It had burned down to the filter. The more I thought about this, the more upset I became.

Khan had chosen Davina. Would I be able to dissolve the mate bond?

Would my pack members accept a werewolf with no background as their Luna?

I wondered if Flinn would find something interesting. There was something very different about Davina, something I couldn’t explain.

If she was a wolfless werewolf, Khan would have no choice but to accept Cassidy.

My limbs felt weak, so I moved back into my room. I searched through the cupboard beside the bed for the moonwater and medicated pills.

I took a mouthful of moonwater and felt rejuvenated. Then I swallowed the pills with it.

I lay carefully on the bed, closing my eyes.

~~~
I sat at the table for lunch, staring at the medium-rare steak before me. I had lost my appetite.
“Alpha, you don’t seem pleased with the meal?” my Beta said.
I frowned. “I’m not!” I replied.
He immediately took the steak away from the table and moved the hunter’s stew closer to me.
The savoury fragrance made me salivate.
“Call Cassidy down for lunch. I’m sure she hasn’t had lunch,” I instructed.
“She has instructed that no one should come and call her for breakfast or lunch. She wants to get some rest,” he explained.
All I could do was nod. I placed my hands on my temples and massaged them.
“What about Davina? Has she had lunch?” I questioned.
“Not yet. She also doesn’t want to be disturbed.”
It seemed that healing me must have been exhausting.
It seemed both women were skipping lunch. Earlier, I had skipped breakfast because I needed to rest. Since I had narrowly escaped the claws of death.
Though an Alpha, my body wasn’t made of steel.
“Fine, then. Get me a glass of red wine.”
Holding the glass of red wine, I gulped it down in one drink and focused on eating the hunter’s stew. Though she had healed me, I still needed to eat meals that could boost my immune system, and the hunter’s stew before me was the best option.
The first spoonful tasted strange. It tasted like zinc. The more I ate, the stranger it became. I just couldn’t explain what was wrong with my taste buds.
Was this because I had skipped breakfast?
Or was I yet to recover?
“Alpha,” I heard my Beta call out in alarm.
What was the urgency? I raised my eyelids to meet his surprised gaze.
“Your nose is bleeding,” he said in alarm.
I raised my fingers and wiped away the warm liquid. It was indeed blood.
Just then, my chest tightened. My claws elongated as I clenched the table tightly. Pain surged aggressively through my veins. I felt like my body was going to explode.
The more I tried to fight it, the weaker I became.
“Alpha!” I heard a scream.
A loud ringing echoed in my brain, and my eyes turned bloodshot.
I tried to howl, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t make a sound.
I called out to my wolf, but Khan was in so much pain.
Was this death?
    CASSIDY'S POVI couldn't sleep.I had been lying in bed for almost an hour, staring at the ceiling while the events of the past few days played over and over in my mind.Something was wrong.I had felt it during the dinner, even though I couldn't put my finger on what it was. Everyone had been smiling, talking, thanking me for arranging the gathering, yet there had been a strange tension underneath it all.Perhaps it was because of Davina.Everything seemed to become complicated whenever she was around.Though I had the guard my father had sent from my home pack. They were here to assist Jasper and I and also protect me since the Deep Paw Claw was no longer safe. I was yet to unravel the issue of the parchment. I had no idea why Jasper had interrogated me. Even though he didn't speak about it, it still lingered in my mind. I sat up and reached for the glass of water beside my bed. Before I could drink, there was a soft knock on my door."Come in."The door opened, and one of the Sum
    DAVINA'S POV“Okay, fine. What else would you like to know?”He pushed an old book toward me. A symbol had been drawn on one of its pages, and whoever had drawn it had been remarkably skilled.“Does that symbol look familiar?”I stared at it.I had seen it before.In the dream.I pressed a hand against my temple, trying to force the memory back. The effort made my head throb.“I don't know.”The pain spread through my head.Elder Thompson moved toward me. “Davina?”I shook my head. “I'm fine.”But I wasn't.The memory was coming back.A woman stood beneath a moonlit sky, holding a child in her arms. She wore a golden crown, and a giant wolf stood before her.The child was crying.Then the wolf that willingly gave its life.A strange sensation passed through me, as though someone were staring directly into my soul. Then, I didn't understand what the dream meant, but something inside me told me it was important.I gasped.The image vanished.I grabbed the table, and Elder Thompson caug
    DAVINA'S POVI followed Flinn through the corridor, my mind still occupied by the voice.The unfamiliar name, ‘Selene’.I had heard that name twice now, and both times, it had been connected to something I couldn't explain. The stranger had called out the same name at the point of death, leaving me with too many unanswered questions.The bracelet beneath my sleeve felt warm against my skin.I glanced at Flinn. “Did Elder Thompson say what he found?”“He didn't explain much.”That wasn't what I was expecting. I needed more information.“Did he say anything about the parchment?”“He only said that it was important.”I frowned. That wasn't an answer.We reached the council chamber, and Flinn opened the door.Elder Thompson stood beside the large table at the center of the room, several parchments spread across it.He looked up as I entered. “Miss Davina.”“Elder Thompson.” I greeted him with a smile.His gaze moved to Flinn. “You may wait outside.”Flinn hesitated. “Elder, if this concer
    DAVINA'S POVMy hands stopped moving.She smiled.“You have done so much for our warriors. I know you are still recovering, but your dedication has not gone unnoticed.”The room grew quiet.I looked at her, feeling a familiar uneasiness settle in.“Thank you.”She nodded.“I hope you continue to heal. We need you.”My heart softened.Perhaps I had misunderstood her. Perhaps she truly wanted me to feel welcome.I looked toward Jasper. He was smiling faintly.For the first time that evening, I felt less alone.Then Cassidy added, “Of course, as the future Luna, I will do everything I can to ensure that our healers are well cared for.”The warriors applauded again.I smiled.But something inside me had shifted.I was not being thanked as someone who belonged. I was being thanked as someone who served.I lowered my gaze.The gathering continued for a little while longer.When it ended, I stood carefully. My body felt heavier than usual.The healer beside me noticed.“Are you all right?”“
    DAVINA'S POVI had barely finished my moon water when a maid knocked on my door.“Miss Davina, the Luna-to-be requests your presence at the gathering.”I looked up from the cup in my hand.“Gathering?”“Yes. Cassidy is hosting a dinner for the injured warriors and their families. She wishes to have all the healers present.”That was thoughtful of her. Every good Luna would do the same.Cassidy had all the qualities it took to be a good Luna. That was one of the reasons I couldn't bring myself to resent her.I glanced at the parchment lying on my bedside table. I had spent most of the afternoon thinking about the strange symbol and the questions it raised.I also thought about the werewolf I had encountered in the forest. The name “Selene” sounded familiar, yet I had no idea where I had heard it.Had he mistaken me for someone else?But why had he looked at me like he knew who I was?He wasn't someone I knew. And how had they gotten silver into their wounds?I had many questions but no
    JASPER'S POVShe was right.Someone's betrayal was costing me the lives of my pack members. Just when I thought I had things under control, new problems emerged.I was hosting an event in two days, and now this?It seemed Deep Paw Claw was gradually losing its glory.A part of me felt burdened by the ceaseless ordeals. My pack seemed unsafe for everyone. Most of my pack members would be living in fear, afraid of being attacked and killed in their own pack.I stared at Davina, feeling sorry for her. She was doing so much. I couldn't let her take on any more duties.“Flinn.”He stepped forward. “Yes, Alpha?”“Take Davina back to her room.”She had been standing for too long.Davina's head snapped toward me.“No.”I looked at her. “You're not fit to be here. You've already done enough.”No one challenged my Alpha authority without punishment, but with Davina, it was different.“And you're not fit to investigate this alone.”Flinn glanced between us.I could already feel the argument comi
