Then, I exhaled and stepped out of my car.
The moment I opened the door to my apartment, I knew something was wrong. The air felt crowded and heavy, my suspicions were confirmed the moment I walked in.
Lyra stood in the center of our living room with her arms crossed and her expression furious. Besides her were three familiar faces. It took me a moment, but I finally figured out why they were. This was an intervention.
I almost laughed at how absurd it was.
“Well,” Lyra said with a sharp tone, “Finally, the prodigal child is back. Where did you even go to?”
I shut the door behind me with an unhurried expression on my face, my gaze flickered over the living room before settling back on her, “What is this, Lyra?” I asked through furrowed brows,
“You know exactly what this is, Nyssa,” Lyra snapped, then with that same heavy tone, she pointed towards a couch, “Sit down, we need to talk to you,”
I didn’t move. One of the others – a girl named Mira who I had once thought was my second-closest friend – leaned forward, “Nyssa, we are all just worried about you,” she said, her tone noticeably softer than Lyra’s, “What you did today, It just doesn’t make sense.”
Another of my ‘friends’ chimed in, “You rejected Alpha Adrian for God’s sake. Do you even understand the scandal you have already caused?”
I looked at them. This time, I really looked.
In my past life, these were individuals whose opinions practically ruled my life. These were the friends I had always tried to impress, friends whose insidious whispers had caused me more pain than anyone else.
Now? They all looked small and insignificant.
“I’m not sitting down,” I said in the calmest tone I could, “Neither am I listening to any words any of you might have.”
Lyra tightened her jaw, “This is not some sort of joke, Nyssa.” she hissed, “We can’t just watch you throw away what is the biggest opportunity of your life.”
There was a soft pause before Mira continued, “You know lots of wolves would kill to be in the position you are in now.”
I tilted my head and shrugged at them, “Then they are welcome to it.”
Silence resounded in the room and Lyra could no longer hold back her rage and emotions. With a pissed-off expression on her face, she took a step forward, “Stop deflecting Nys,” she hissed, “We both know you are doing something very stupid here. All we want to know is why.”
I let her words sit for a moment before smiling, “You want to understand?” I asked,
They all nodded,
I took a step forward, then another until I was standing just a couple of feet away from her, “You all see this as an opportunity,” I started in a calm tone, “But I see this as nothing more than a prison with posh iron bars. If kneeling, obeying and sacrificing yourself for someone else is your definition of a good life and a massive opportunity, then you can all have it.”
Mira looked shaken, the others stared blankly at me. But all of them were confused and a little scared.
Lyra was the only one who was able to look directly into my eyes,
“You are just being dramatic,” she said, but it was clear there was a crack in her voice now, “Alpha Adrian chose you to be his mate, and that means something.”
I met her eyes and shook my head, “No, it does not.”
Before she could reply, I straightened, then brushed an invisible crease from my sleeve, “If this is all you all want to talk about, then we are done.”
Lyra stepped forward with her hand raised. “No,” she said with a frown, “We are not done-”
“Yes,” I cut in before she could finish, “We are.”
And with those words, I walked past them. There was no hesitation in my steps nor did I glance back.
“Nyssa!” Lyra called after me but I ignored her.
I reached my door, stepped inside and shut it closed behind me.
The noise faded, a few seconds passed before I heard multiple knocks on my door.
“Nyssa!” Lyra’s voice came through the door, “Open the door. We are not done talking,”
Another knock sounded, “Don’t do this, we just want to help you,”
I walked to my desk, pulled out my chair, sat down and brought out my laptop.
“Stop knocking,” I said with enough harshness in my tone that it stopped instantly,
Good. The screen on my laptop lit up and it cast a warm glow over my room.
And just like that, everything faded away. I spent the next few hours just working. I began to compile all the data I had taken from the trade center, from the suppliers to the cost and even my expected returns.
By the time I was done, my plan was no longer just a rough idea in my mind, it was a blueprint now, a full path that hopefully was going to make me millions of dollars.
This was the path to a future. Mine.
I closed my laptop with a smile on my face and leaned back, just in time for my phone on the table to buzz.
I picked it up and even though it was an unknown number, I answered the call with a soft smile on my face.
“..Hello?” A low, familiar voice flickered through the line, “Nyssa.”
Damien.
There was something about the way my name rolled smoothly off his lips that made shivers run down my spine.
“I was starting to think I wasn’t going to receive a call,” I said with an amused tone,
“I don’t make decisions I plan on reversing,” he answered, “And besides, no man would ever want to disappoint a lady as gorgeous as you are.”
I chuckled, “That was smooth,”
A brief pause before he replied, “I don't try to be,”
I laughed harder, and before I could reply, he had already continued,
“I’ve made a reservation. I’ve already texted you the addresses. It’s the largest restaurant in the city, so I am sure you already know where it is. You can’t miss it even if you want to.”
“Oh, that’s a nice place,” I answered, smiling,
I could feel the way his voice lit up with my words. “Good,” he answered, “Should I send a driver for you?” he asked,
“No,” I replied, shaking my head, “I can drive myself,”
“An independent wolf,” he murmured, almost to himself even, “I love that.”
I didn’t respond,
“Eight o clock,” he continued, not even noticing my pause, “Don’t be late,”
The line clicked, and I stared at my phone for a moment before setting it down.
Getting ready did not take long, I moved with the same efficiency I applied to my everyday tasks. I had my shower, and did my makeup and hair in record time. When I was done, I picked out my dress for the night.
It was a red dress that hugged my curves tightly. It wasn’t just beautiful, it was an intentional statement.
When I stepped out of the room, the entire house fell silent. Lyra and the others stood up, they were watching and staring with obvious shock written over their faces.
I didn’t even acknowledge them, I walked past them and stepped out into the night.
I had just reached for the handle of my car when a voice behind me made me freeze.
“Is he why you rejected me?” the voice was tight, controlled and filled with fury.
I blinked, and for a split second, I froze as I stared right at Lyra.I froze not because it was a surprise to see her. The truth was that, if there was anyone I had expected to crash the ceremony, it would have been her.Lyra had been my best friend for decades. I knew what she thought most of the time, and there was no way she would be able to resist the urge to show up. So, while I wasn’t surprised that she had showed up, I was surprised by just how little I cared about her presence.Even though I knew she was going to come, I had expected a small part of me to feel anger at the sight of her, or maybe satisfaction at finally winning. But instead, I felt nothing at all.The desire to walk over to her and send her out of the hall wasn’t even there, even when I momentarily tried to muster it up. Our eyes met, and I watched her grow tense.A flash of fear passed through her eyes, overclouding her rage. She took a step backwards, and prepared to run, but instead of walking towards her l
Nyssa's POV:"You conniving bitch!"The loud shrill scream filled the air, and the moment it did, everyone froze. One moment, laughter, cheers and music filled the air, the next, there was complete and utter silence as everyone turned their gaze towards the source of the scream. It only took me a second to recognize who the screamer was, Selene.Everyone stared at her in shock, and for a long moment, she just stood there, enraged and pissed with her hands clenched tightly into fists. She was breathing heavily, and her expression was twisted into one of pure rage.Around her, the crowd had long since parted, no one wanted to be in the vicinity of an obviously mad woman. Beside me, Damien shifted closer, and his hand immediately settled on my back. He was being protective, and while it was a welcome gesture, I didn’t think that I needed it.I expected Selene to think through her actions and stop, but my expectations were not met. It only took her a couple more seconds of heavy breathing
Lyra's POV:Lyra was furious. No, she shook her head. Furious was a light word, it wasn’t adequate to describe the amount of rage that was boiling within her. She was’t just furious, she was livid, burning and her health was seething.Today was going to be Nyssa’s mating day and the thought of Nyssa finally getting a man like Damien was more than enough for her to bear. Lyra tried to push the ceremony off her mind, but no matter what she did, it seemed to be stuck. And right now, every breath she took now felt like fire in her lungs. Why Nyssa? Why not me? Why not me?Those were the thoughts that kept on spiraling into her mind. What gave Nyssa the right to be able to live with Damien, what gave her the right to dress up and get mated to a powerful alpha? Those and more questions kept on endlessly repeating inside Lyra's mind. And since she couldn’t stop thinking about it, she tried to understand it. After all, maybe that could work to calm her down. But no, all it did was increase her
Nyssa's POV:The applause after our kiss didn’t just seem endless, it actually was.It took a while, but the world we had built around us finally shattered, and when it did, we were exposed to the sight of thousands of wolves standing up, all clapping and hurling up congratulations at us.The sound of the cheers and applause rolled through the massive hall like the sound of thunder in a storm. It was wave after wave of cheers that kept on crashing against walls that both Damien and I had built up.And together, we stood at the center of it all.Just me, and my mate. Mate. The thought of that word alone was enough to make my heart flutter in delight and satisfaction. Damien was now officially my mate, my husband, and my alpha. And that also meant I was his Luna. For the second time in my two lives, I would now be addressed by the world as Luna Nyssa, and I could hardly believe it.Even as the applause kept on rolling, Damien wrapped his arms tightly around my waist and pulled me in clos
Nyssa's POV:The moment I saw him, the world disappeared. Subconsciously, I knew that there were hundreds of people around us, I knew that the grand hall was packed, and I knew that elders, alpahs and lots of powerful wolves from around the world were watching me.Yet none of them mattered, because all I could see, all I could feel was him.Damien.And now that he was kneeling right in front of me, the world c`eased to exist. My breath caught as I watched Damien drop to his knees, holding the Luna’s crested ring while he looked up at me like I was the most precious thing in existence. My heart ached, and for the first time in a long time, the aching wasn’t from pain, it was from happiness. My entire body was flushed with an emotion I once believed was impossible for me to feel.My face grew flush, and my mind raced faster, but his voice broke through the wall I had set around his thoughts."Nyssa." His voice was soft and the tone he used warmed my heart. It was just one word, but I cou
Damien's POV:I had woken up today with the knowledge that my entire life was about to change, and for the first time in a very long time, I welcomed that change.Because the change was going to be with Nyssa. The woman I wanted, needed and loved. My entire body ached for her touch, and the more time I spent without her in my vicinity, the worse if felt. The past twenty-four hours have been one of the most stressful times for me. But one good thing was that it had opened my eyes to the truth of where I actually belonged. And it wasn’t on the battlefields, or in council walls, or at meetings with elders and alphas. No, I belonged with only one person; her.The last few hours of the actual ceremony had been absolute chaos. But at least, my station as the groom surprisingly gave me more rights than my position as the alpha.Otherwise, I would have been outside still welcoming the hundreds of guests who were streaming through the gates every hour. There were some pack matters that were bro
Shock slammed into me as his words kept on replaying in my mind.“That is ridiculous.” I hissed,“Yes, my Luna,” Joe answered, and for the first time since he had started using that phrase to refer to me, I didn’t even fixate on it. “But what I was told is that they’ve already started investigating
It had been three days since the summons from the alpha council, and my nerves had never been more alight. The night after our date, Damien had suggested I move into his estate closest to me, and I had told him I was going to think about it. Now, a few days later, I was preparing to move. When I ha
Damien’s POV:The rest of the warehouse tour went far more smoothly after the idiot trader was dragged away. And after he left, I no longer paid attention to the herbs anymore, all my focus was on my mate.I focused on her every movement, from the way she smiled while speaking to her workers or the
Damien’s POVFrom the very moment I had walked into the warehouse, I had been distracted. And to be quite honest, I did not care.My eyes were on Nyssa, who had led the tour through the warehouse with a bright smile on her face as she passionately explained every little detail of her business. She
